📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Highlander on level ground and let the engine cool fully.
  • Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and remove the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • If extra access is needed, raise the front with a floor jack, rated 2-ton minimum and support it with jack stands, rated 2-ton minimum.
  • A serpentine belt is the single long belt that drives accessories like the alternator and water pump.
  • A torque wrench tightens bolts to an exact tightness so parts do not leak or crack.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover and Splash Shield

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the small fasteners holding the upper engine cover, if equipped.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket to remove the lower splash shield fasteners under the front of the Highlander.
  • Set the clips and bolts in a small tray so they do not get lost.
  • Take photos before removing parts.

Step 2: Drain the Coolant

  • Place a drain pan, 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
  • Slowly remove the radiator cap only after the engine is completely cool.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to open the radiator drain cock at the bottom of the radiator.
  • Let the coolant drain until flow slows to a drip.
  • Close the radiator drain cock by hand, then gently snug it with the flat-blade screwdriver. Do not overtighten the plastic drain.

Step 3: Loosen the Water Pump Pulley Bolts

  • Before removing the belt, use a pulley holding tool (specialty) to keep the water pump pulley from turning.
  • Use a 12mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to slightly loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  • Do not fully remove the pulley bolts yet.
  • Loosen pulley bolts while belt holds tension.

Step 4: Remove the Serpentine Belt

  • Note the belt routing before removal. Take a clear photo with your phone.
  • Use a 19mm socket, 1/2-inch drive breaker bar, or serpentine belt tool (specialty) on the belt tensioner.
  • A belt tensioner is a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight.
  • Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension, then slide the belt off the water pump pulley.
  • Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position.

Step 5: Remove the Water Pump Pulley

  • Use the pulley holding tool (specialty) again to hold the pulley steady.
  • Use a 12mm socket to remove the loosened water pump pulley bolts.
  • Remove the water pump pulley from the pump hub.
  • Set the pulley aside where it will not get bent or dropped.

Step 6: Remove the Old Water Pump

  • Place shop towels below the pump area because more coolant may spill.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  • Keep track of bolt positions if any bolts are different lengths.
  • Gently pull the water pump away from the engine.
  • If the pump is stuck, tap lightly by hand. Do not pry hard against the aluminum engine surface.

Step 7: Clean the Mounting Surface

  • Use a plastic gasket scraper to remove old gasket material from the engine mounting surface.
  • Wipe the surface clean with shop towels.
  • Do not scratch the aluminum surface. Scratches can cause coolant leaks.
  • Make sure no gasket pieces fall into the coolant passages.
  • Clean metal seals better.

Step 8: Install the New Water Pump

  • Place the new water pump gasket onto the new engine water pump.
  • Position the pump carefully against the engine.
  • Start all bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use a torque wrench, 5-80 ft-lb range to tighten the water pump bolts to Torque to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall the Water Pump Pulley

  • Place the pulley back onto the water pump hub.
  • Start the pulley bolts by hand.
  • Use a pulley holding tool (specialty) to hold the pulley steady.
  • Use a 12mm socket and torque wrench, 5-80 ft-lb range to tighten the pulley bolts to Torque to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the belt around the pulleys using your photo as a guide.
  • Use the 19mm socket, 1/2-inch drive breaker bar, or serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slide the belt into place on the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check that the belt ribs sit correctly in every pulley groove.

Step 11: Refill the Cooling System

  • Use a funnel with narrow spout to fill the radiator with Toyota-compatible pink premixed coolant.
  • Fill the coolant reservoir to the “FULL” mark.
  • Leave the radiator cap off for the first air-bleeding step.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket. Tighten it snugly.

Step 12: Bleed Air From the Cooling System

  • Start the engine and set the heater to full hot with the blower on low.
  • Let the engine idle while watching the coolant level in the radiator.
  • Add coolant with the funnel with narrow spout as the level drops.
  • When the upper radiator hose gets warm and air bubbles stop appearing, install the radiator cap.
  • Let the engine reach normal operating temperature and check for leaks around the water pump.

Step 13: Reinstall the Splash Shield

  • Shut the engine off and let it cool enough to work safely.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket to reinstall the lower splash shield.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the upper engine cover, if equipped.
  • If raised, remove the jack stands, rated 2-ton minimum and lower the Highlander with the floor jack, rated 2-ton minimum.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Test drive your Highlander for 10-15 minutes while watching the temperature gauge.
  • ✅ After the engine cools completely, recheck the radiator and coolant reservoir levels.
  • ✅ Inspect around the water pump, hose areas, and radiator drain cock for leaks.
  • ✅ Recheck the serpentine belt position after the first test drive.
  • ✅ Properly recycle old coolant at an approved collection center. Do not pour it on the ground or into a drain.
