🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect Battery Power

• Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery cable clamp.
• Remove the negative cable from the battery terminal and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
• Wait at least 2 minutes before working on starter wiring.
• Always disconnect negative first.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle

• Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
• Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Grand Cherokee at the proper front lifting point.
• Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front structural support points.
• Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
• Shake the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable before going underneath.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Shield if Equipped

• Put on safety glasses and use a work light to inspect the lower engine area.
• If a lower splash shield blocks access, use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the bolts.
• Use a trim clip removal tool or flat-blade screwdriver to remove any plastic push clips.
• Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.

Step 4: Locate the Starter

• From underneath, look on the passenger side where the engine meets the transmission.
• The starter is a small cylindrical motor bolted to the transmission bellhousing.
• The bellhousing is the large round transmission case area attached to the back of the engine.
• Use a work light to identify the large battery cable and the smaller control wire on the starter solenoid.

Step 5: Remove the Starter Electrical Connections

• Use a 13mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension to remove the nut from the large battery cable terminal.
• Pull the large cable off the starter stud and move it aside.
• Use a 10mm socket to remove the nut from the smaller starter control wire, if equipped with a nut-style terminal.
• If the smaller wire uses a push connector, use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently release the locking tab and unplug it.
• Do not pull on the wire itself. Pull on the connector body.
• Take a phone photo first.

Step 6: Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts

• Support the starter with one hand. It is heavier than it looks.
• Use a 15mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive universal joint to remove the two starter mounting bolts.
• Keep the bolts organized so you can compare them to the replacement starter during installation.
• Carefully lower the starter out of the vehicle.

Step 7: Compare the Old and New Starter

• Place the old and new starter motor side by side.
• Check that the mounting ears, electrical terminals, and nose cone shape match.
• Use electrical contact cleaner on the cable ends if they are dirty or oxidized.
• Let the terminals dry before reconnecting.

Step 8: Install the New Starter

• Raise the new starter motor into position by hand.
• Start both mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
• Use a 15mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension to snug the bolts evenly.
• Use a torque wrench 10-100 ft-lb range with the 15mm socket to tighten the starter mounting bolts to Torque to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reconnect the Starter Wiring

• Install the large battery cable onto the large starter terminal stud.
• Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench 10-100 ft-lb range to tighten the cable nut to Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
• Install the smaller control wire onto its terminal.
• If it uses a nut, use a 10mm socket and tighten to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
• If it uses a push connector, press it in until it clicks.
• Make sure the cables are not touching the exhaust or any moving parts.

Step 10: Reinstall the Lower Shield

• Lift the lower shield back into place by hand.
• Install plastic clips using your fingers or a trim clip removal tool to guide them into place.
• Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the shield bolts.
• Tighten shield bolts snug only. Do not overtighten plastic panels.

Step 11: Lower the Vehicle

• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
• Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
• Lower your Grand Cherokee slowly to the ground.
• Remove the wheel chocks.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

• Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal.
• Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the cable clamp securely.
• Apply battery terminal protector spray to the terminal after tightening.
• Do not overtighten the battery clamp.
