📋 Before You Begin
- 📍 Park your CR-V on firm, level ground. Select Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the engine.
- 🛞 Place wheel chocks securely in front of and behind the left-rear tire.
- 🌡️ Wait until the engine and exhaust components are cool.
- 📷 Use a phone or camera to photograph the original belt routing before removal. Also check for a routing label in the engine compartment.
- 🔍 Compare the new and old belts before installation. Their length, width, and number of ribs must match.
- ℹ️ The automatic tensioner is a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight without manual adjustment.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Right-Front Wheel
- Use the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar to loosen each right-front wheel nut approximately one-half turn.
- Do not remove the wheel nuts while the tire is supporting the vehicle.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the designated right-front jacking point.
- Place the jack stand rated 2-ton minimum beneath the reinforced side support point, then lower your CR-V onto it.
- Gently push the body to verify that it is stable before continuing.
Step 3: Remove the Right-Front Wheel
- Use the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar to remove the loosened wheel nuts.
- Remove the wheel and place it flat away from your work area.
Step 4: Open the Belt Access Area
- Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool to remove the push clips securing the front portion of the right inner-fender liner and lower splash shield.
- Use the Phillips No. 2 screwdriver or 10mm socket with the 3/8-inch-drive ratchet for any screws or bolts fitted in those panels.
- Pull the liner back only far enough to expose the crankshaft pulley, belt, and tensioner.
- Keep each fastener organized by location. Replace clips that crack or no longer hold securely.
Step 5: Record the Factory Belt Routing
- Use the LED work light to inspect the complete belt path.
- Confirm your photograph clearly shows which pulley receives the ribbed side and which receives the smooth back of the belt.
- The belt ribs must run only in grooved pulleys. Smooth pulleys contact the smooth back of the belt.
- Draw the routing before removing the belt.
Step 6: Release Belt Tension
- Fit the 19mm long-handle box-end wrench fully onto the tensioner’s cast hex.
- From the right side of the engine, rotate the tensioner slowly in the belt-release direction until the belt becomes loose. Do not turn the pulley’s retaining bolt as though removing it.
- If the tensioner’s locking holes align, insert the 5mm locking pin fully to hold the tensioner in its released position.
- If the holes do not align, keep controlled pressure on the 19mm long-handle box-end wrench while slipping the belt off an accessible smooth pulley.
- Slowly return the tensioner to its resting position after the belt is free.
Step 7: Remove and Inspect the Old Belt
- Remove the old belt through the right wheel-well opening by hand while using the LED work light to watch for obstructions.
- Inspect it for missing ribs, cracks, glazing, frayed edges, or oil contamination.
- Use gloved fingers to rotate each accessible pulley by hand. A pulley that grinds, wobbles, binds, or feels loose must be repaired before fitting the new belt.
- Check the tensioner for leakage, crooked alignment, or a weak and jerky spring action.
Step 8: Route the New Belt
- Route the new belt by hand according to your photograph or the factory routing label.
- Leave one easily reached smooth pulley until last.
- Use the LED work light to confirm every belt rib is centered in every grooved pulley.
- Make sure the belt is not twisted and does not ride over a pulley flange.
Step 9: Apply Automatic Tension
- Fit the 19mm long-handle box-end wrench onto the tensioner hex and rotate it slowly to unload the tensioner.
- Remove the 5mm locking pin, if installed, and slip the belt over the final pulley by hand.
- Slowly release the 19mm long-handle box-end wrench until the tensioner applies full belt tension.
- Do not force the belt over a pulley with a screwdriver. That can cut the belt cords or damage a pulley.
- No belt-tension adjustment or tensioner-bolt tightening is required because the tensioner is automatic.
Step 10: Verify Belt Seating
- Use the LED work light to inspect every visible pulley from above and through the wheel well.
- Confirm that all ribs sit inside their matching grooves and that the belt is centered on each smooth pulley.
- If one rib is outside a groove, use the 19mm long-handle box-end wrench to unload the tensioner and correct the belt before starting the engine.
Step 11: Reinstall the Fender Liner
- Position the right inner-fender liner and lower splash shield in their original locations.
- Install the screws with the Phillips No. 2 screwdriver and install any bolts with the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet.
- Press the push clips into place by hand after resetting their center pins.
- Tighten these small plastic-panel fasteners only until seated; Honda does not require high torque here.
Step 12: Install the Wheel
- Install the wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand to prevent crossed threads.
- Use the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to raise your CR-V, remove the jack stand rated 2-ton minimum, and lower the tire to the ground.
- Use the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern: Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Remove all tools from the engine compartment and wheel-well area.
- 👀 Start the engine and observe the belt from a safe distance. It should track centrally without wandering, slapping, or squealing.
- ❄️ Switch the air conditioning on and verify that the belt remains stable as accessory load changes.
- 🔇 Shut the engine off immediately if the belt moves toward a pulley edge or produces repeated chirping, grinding, or squealing.
- 🔍 Switch off the engine and perform one final belt-seating inspection with the LED work light.
- 🛞 Recheck the wheel-nut torque after approximately 50-100 km of driving.
