🔧 Forte - Serpentine Belt Replacement

The serpentine belt drives your Forte’s alternator, air-conditioning compressor, and coolant pump. Replacement requires lifting the right-front corner, removing the splash shield, releasing the automatic belt tensioner, and installing the new belt in the original routing.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool completely before working near the belt and pulleys.
  • ⚠️ Keep the ignition off and the key away from the vehicle while your hands are near the belt.
  • ⚠️ Support your Forte with a jack stand. Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ The automatic tensioner is spring-loaded. Move it slowly and keep your fingers away from pinch points.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not normally required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📍 Park your Forte on firm, level ground. Select Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the engine.
  • 📍 Place wheel chocks firmly behind both rear tires.
  • 📍 Open the hood and inspect the belt-routing diagram near the radiator support or underside of the hood.
  • 📍 Use a phone to photograph the existing belt routing before removing it. If the routing label is missing, make a clear drawing.
  • 📍 Remember that ribbed belt surfaces run against grooved pulleys, while the smooth belt surface runs against smooth pulleys.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Inspect the Belt and Pulleys

  • Use the work light to inspect the belt for cracks, missing ribs, frayed edges, glazing, or oil contamination.
  • Use the work light to check for coolant or engine-oil leaks around the belt area. Repair active leaks before installing a new belt.
  • Use your phone to take several pictures showing how the belt passes around every pulley.

Step 2: Loosen the Right-Front Wheel

  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each right-front wheel nut approximately one-half turn.
  • Do not remove the wheel nuts while the tire is still supporting the vehicle.

Step 3: Raise and Support the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack at the reinforced front jacking point specified for your Forte.
  • Place the jack stand beneath the reinforced right-front body support point, then lower the vehicle securely onto it.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly positioned as secondary support without allowing it to carry the vehicle’s weight.
  • Use your hands to shake the vehicle gently. Do not continue unless it is stable.

Step 4: Remove the Right-Front Wheel

  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the loosened wheel nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and place it flat beneath the side of the vehicle as an additional precaution.

Step 5: Remove the Access Splash Shield

  • Use the trim-clip removal tool to lift the center pins from the right-front engine splash-shield clips.
  • Use the flat-blade screwdriver only where needed to release stubborn clip centers without damaging the shield.
  • Remove or fold back the access section until the crankshaft pulley and belt path are visible.
  • Keep the clips arranged by location for installation.

Step 6: Release Belt Tension

  • Locate the automatic tensioner. The tensioner is the spring-loaded arm carrying a smooth pulley that keeps the belt tight.
  • Fit the 17mm socket and long-handle ratchet or serpentine belt tool onto the tensioner’s hex boss.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly in the direction that moves its pulley away from the belt. On this 2.0L arrangement, this is normally clockwise when viewed from the passenger-side wheel opening.
  • Stop if the tool begins loosening a pulley bolt instead of moving the complete spring-loaded arm.
  • Hold the tensioner released and slip the belt off one easy-to-reach smooth pulley with your gloved hand.
  • Slowly return the tensioner to its resting position. Do not let it snap back.

Step 7: Remove the Old Belt

  • Use your gloved hands to remove the belt from the remaining pulleys.
  • Work the belt through the passenger-side wheel opening without pulling on hoses or wiring.
  • Compare the old and new belts side by side. The new belt should have the same rib count and nearly the same overall length.

Step 8: Check the Tensioner and Pulleys

  • Use your gloved hand to spin each accessible idler and tensioner pulley. An idler is a free-spinning pulley used to guide the belt.
  • Confirm that each pulley rotates smoothly without grinding, wobbling, or looseness.
  • Use the 17mm socket and long-handle ratchet to move the tensioner through its normal travel. It should move smoothly and return firmly.
  • Replace a noisy pulley or weak, binding tensioner before installing the new belt.

Step 9: Route the New Belt

  • Use the work light and route the new belt according to your routing photograph and the factory routing label.
  • Start around the crankshaft pulley at the bottom, then route the belt around the remaining driven and guide pulleys.
  • Leave one easy-to-reach smooth pulley until last.
  • Use your fingers to verify that every belt rib is seated inside its matching pulley groove.
  • Confirm that the smooth back of the belt contacts only smooth pulleys.
  • Use small clips to hold long belt runs.

Step 10: Seat the Belt Under Tension

  • Use the 17mm socket with the long-handle ratchet or serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner slowly in the release direction.
  • Slide the belt over the final smooth pulley with your gloved hand.
  • Slowly release the tensioner against the belt.
  • Use the work light to inspect every pulley from above and through the wheel opening.
  • Correct any belt rib hanging over a pulley edge before operating the engine.

Step 11: Reinstall the Splash Shield

  • Position the splash shield by hand and align all mounting holes.
  • Use the trim-clip removal tool or your fingers to install the clips with their center pins raised, then press each center pin flush.
  • Replace broken or loose clips so the shield cannot contact the belt or tire.

Step 12: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Install the right-front wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to snug the nuts in a crossing pattern.
  • Use the floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly, remove the jack stand, and lower the tire to the ground.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crossing pattern: Torque to 107-127 Nm (79-94 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Remove every tool from the engine compartment and wheel area.
  • ✅ From a safe position, start the engine and watch the belt for several seconds. It should remain centered and run smoothly.
  • ✅ Switch on the air conditioning and headlights. Listen for squealing, chirping, slapping, or grinding.
  • ✅ Shut off the engine immediately if the belt moves toward a pulley edge or makes an abnormal noise.
  • ✅ After the engine stops, use the work light to inspect the belt again. Keep your hands away until every pulley has completely stopped.
  • ✅ Recheck the right-front wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-100 km.
