🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise the Front Wheels
- Position the 3-ton floor jack under the front crossmember and lift until both front tires clear the ground.
- Place the 3-ton jack stands beneath the approved front frame support points, then lower your Tundra onto them.
- Push gently on the vehicle to verify that it is stable.
Step 2: Remove Fluid from the Reservoir
- Open the power steering reservoir cap by hand.
- Use the 500mL fluid-transfer syringe to remove as much old fluid as possible and place it in the 8-quart drain pan.
- Reinstall the cap loosely to prevent dirt from entering.
Step 3: Remove the Upper Fan Shroud
- Use the trim-clip removal tool and 10mm socket to remove the upper radiator cover fasteners, where equipped.
- Use the 10mm socket to remove the upper fan-shroud fasteners.
- Release the lower shroud section from the upper section by hand, then lift the upper section out carefully.
- Store clips in a labeled container.
Step 4: Remove the Serpentine Belt
- Confirm the belt routing using your photograph or the underhood diagram.
- Fit the serpentine belt tool with 14mm adapter onto the automatic belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner clockwise slowly, then slide the belt off the power steering pump pulley.
- Release the tensioner slowly. Do not allow it to snap back.
- Remove the belt completely if it is being replaced. Otherwise, move it away from the pump and protect it from fluid.
Step 5: Disconnect the Pump Inlet Hose
- Place the 8-quart drain pan beneath the pump.
- Use the hose-clamp pliers to move the low-pressure inlet-hose clamp away from the pump fitting.
- Twist and remove the hose by hand. Use the 90-degree pick only to break the seal without puncturing the hose.
- Close the hose with the correctly sized rubber hose plug.
Step 6: Disconnect the Pressure Line
- Clean the pressure-line connection with a shop towel.
- Use the correctly fitting 17mm or 19mm socket to remove the pressure-line union bolt from the pump.
- Discard both sealing washers. Do not reuse crushed sealing washers.
- Plug the line with the correctly sized rubber hose plug and keep the connection clean.
Step 7: Remove the Power Steering Pump
- Support the pump with one hand.
- Use the 14mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove the pump mounting bolts.
- Record each bolt location because bolt lengths may differ.
- Lift the pump from the engine compartment without bending the pressure line.
Step 8: Transfer the Pulley if Required
- Compare the old and new pumps on a clean work surface. Verify matching ports, mounting points, shaft length, and pulley alignment.
- If the pulley is retained by a nut, use the power steering pulley holding tool with the correctly fitting 19mm socket to remove it.
- If the pulley is press-fit, use the power steering pulley puller and installer set. A puller grips the pulley hub and removes it without bending the pulley.
- Install the pulley on the new pump using the installer portion of the power steering pulley puller and installer set.
- Stop when the pulley position matches the original pump and its grooves align with the other accessory pulleys.
- Do not strike the pulley or press against its outer rim.
Step 9: Install the New Pump
- Position the new pump against its mounting bracket by hand.
- Start every mounting bolt by hand to prevent crossed threads.
- Use the 14mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the pump mounting bolts evenly.
- Torque to 43 Nm (32 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reconnect the Hydraulic Lines
- Install a new inlet O-ring where fitted, lubricating it with a small amount of fresh DEXRON fluid.
- Push the inlet hose fully onto the pump fitting by hand.
- Use the hose-clamp pliers to return the clamp to its original position.
- Place one new sealing washer on each side of the pressure-line fitting, then install its union bolt by hand.
- Use the correct 17mm or 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the union bolt.
- Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
- Keep the pressure hose in its natural position. It must not be twisted or touching the belt.
Step 11: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt
- Route the belt around every pulley according to the underhood diagram, leaving the easiest upper pulley for last.
- Use the serpentine belt tool with 14mm adapter to rotate the tensioner clockwise.
- Slip the belt over the final pulley, then release the tensioner slowly.
- Inspect every pulley and verify that all belt ribs sit completely inside their grooves.
Step 12: Reinstall the Fan Shroud
- Lower the fan shroud into position without contacting the radiator core.
- Engage the lower shroud section and locating tabs by hand.
- Use the 10mm socket to reinstall the shroud and radiator-cover fasteners until snug.
- Reinstall the plastic clips using hand pressure.
Step 13: Fill and Bleed the System with the Engine Off
- Remove the reservoir cap and insert the 3/8-inch-spout funnel.
- Add fresh DEXRON II or DEXRON III automatic transmission fluid to the COLD mark.
- With the engine off and front wheels raised, turn the steering wheel slowly from near full left to near full right 15-20 times.
- Do not force the wheel against either stop.
- Check the level every few cycles and add fluid with the funnel. Do not let the reservoir run dry.
- Continue until large air bubbles stop appearing.
Step 14: Bleed the System with the Engine Running
- Verify that tools are removed from the engine bay and the belt is correctly seated.
- Start the engine and let it idle. Do not rev it.
- Watch the reservoir. Shut the engine off immediately if the fluid becomes heavily foamed or the pump makes a loud whining sound.
- Turn the steering wheel slowly from side to side several times without holding it against either stop.
- Shut the engine off, wait several minutes, and use the funnel to correct the fluid level to the COLD mark.
- Repeat until the fluid remains clear and steering assistance is smooth.
Step 15: Lower the Vehicle and Inspect
- Use the 3-ton floor jack to lift your Tundra slightly and remove the 3-ton jack stands.
- Lower the vehicle slowly and remove the wheel chocks.
- Use shop towels to clean the pump and hose connections, then inspect for fresh leaks with the engine idling.

- ✅ Confirm that steering assist is smooth and quiet while stationary and during a slow test drive.
- ✅ Recheck the belt position and inspect both pump connections for leakage.
