🔧 Murano - MAF Sensor Replacement

The mass air flow (MAF) sensor measures how much air enters your Murano’s engine. Replacing it involves disconnecting one electrical connector and removing two screws from the air-cleaner housing.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Switch the ignition completely off and keep the key away from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Allow the engine to cool before working near the intake system.
  • ⚠️ Never touch the sensing elements inside the new MAF sensor.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not normally required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips No. 2 screwdriver
  • 1/4-inch drive inch-pound torque wrench
  • Phillips No. 2 torque bit socket
  • OBD-II scan tool
  • Nitrile mechanic gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Mass air flow sensor with sealing ring - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Murano on level ground, select Park, and apply the parking brake.
  • 🔑 Switch the ignition off and wait at least one minute before unplugging the sensor.
  • 🧹 Keep dirt away from the exposed sensor opening. Dirt entering here can reach the engine.
  • 📍 Open the hood. The MAF sensor is mounted in the air-cleaner outlet near the driver-side front area of the engine compartment.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the MAF Sensor

  • Use safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves before reaching into the engine compartment.
  • Find the air-filter box and follow its large intake duct toward the engine.
  • The MAF sensor is the small electrical sensor installed in the air-cleaner outlet, immediately after the filter box.

Step 2: Disconnect the Electrical Connector

  • Press the connector’s locking tab with your thumb, then pull the connector straight away from the sensor.
  • Hold the connector body rather than pulling on its wires.
  • Inspect the terminals for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins.
  • Wiggle the connector gently if it feels stuck.

Step 3: Remove the Old MAF Sensor

  • Use a Phillips No. 2 screwdriver to remove the two MAF sensor retaining screws.
  • Keep both screws in a safe place for reuse.
  • Lift the sensor straight out of the air-cleaner housing. Do not twist it against the plastic opening.
  • Use your gloved fingers to remove the old sealing ring if it remains in the housing.

Step 4: Install the New MAF Sensor

  • Confirm the new sensor’s sealing ring is seated evenly around its base.
  • Hold the sensor by its plastic body. Do not touch the small sensing elements inside its airflow passage.
  • Lower the sensor straight into the opening in the same orientation as the original.
  • Make sure the sensor sits completely flat before installing the screws.

Step 5: Tighten the Retaining Screws

  • Start both screws by hand using the Phillips No. 2 screwdriver to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 1/4-inch drive inch-pound torque wrench and Phillips No. 2 torque bit socket to tighten each screw evenly.
  • Torque to 1.7 Nm (15 in-lbs). Do not overtighten; the air-cleaner housing is plastic.

Step 6: Reconnect the Sensor

  • Push the electrical connector straight onto the new sensor until its locking tab clicks.
  • Pull back gently on the connector body to confirm it is locked.
  • Check that no wire is stretched, pinched, or touching a hot component.

Step 7: Clear Stored Fault Codes

  • Connect the OBD-II scan tool to the diagnostic port beneath the driver-side dashboard.
  • Switch the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Use the OBD-II scan tool’s Diagnostics > Engine Control Module > Read Codes function and record any codes.
  • Select Diagnostics > Engine Control Module > Clear Codes to erase MAF-related faults after confirming the repair.
  • Switch the ignition off and disconnect the OBD-II scan tool.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and let it idle for several minutes without pressing the accelerator.
  • ✅ A briefly uneven idle can occur while the engine computer readjusts to the new airflow signal.
  • ✅ Confirm the malfunction indicator lamp stays off and the engine idles smoothly.
  • ✅ Check around the sensor and intake duct for looseness or an air leak.
  • ✅ Take a short road test, then use the OBD-II scan tool to confirm no fault codes return.
  • ⚠️ If code P0101 returns, inspect the air filter, intake duct, connector, and wiring before replacing additional parts.
