🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Sensor
- Use the interior hood-release handle, then release the safety latch and raise the hood.
- Use safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves while working around the engine compartment.
- Find the MAF sensor installed in the air-cleaner outlet immediately downstream of the engine air filter.
Step 2: Disconnect the Electrical Connector
- Press the locking tab on the MAF sensor connector with your fingers.
- Pull the connector straight away from the sensor by its plastic housing. Do not pull on the wires.
- If the connector resists, press the locking tab more firmly and gently rock the housing by hand.
- Never pry against the sensor body.
Step 3: Remove the MAF Sensor
- Use the JIS No. 2 screwdriver to loosen and remove the two MAF sensor retaining screws.
- Place the screws somewhere clean so they cannot fall into the engine compartment.
- Grip the sensor by its plastic housing and lift it straight out of the air-cleaner outlet.
- Do not twist forcefully or insert a tool beneath the sensor.
Step 4: Inspect the Mounting Opening
- Use your gloved fingers to check that the old sealing O-ring did not remain inside the opening.
- Inspect the opening visually while wearing safety glasses. Do not allow dirt or tools to enter the intake.
- Do not use compressed air or solvent inside the opening.
Step 5: Install the New Sensor
- Remove the new MAF sensor from its packaging by holding only the plastic housing.
- Verify that its sealing O-ring is seated evenly and is not twisted.
- Align the sensor with the mounting opening. Its shape and screw holes determine the correct direction.
- Press the sensor straight into place by hand until its flange sits flush.
- Do not touch the sensing elements.
Step 6: Tighten the Retaining Screws
- Start both retaining screws several turns by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 1/4-inch drive inch-pound torque wrench with the JIS No. 2 screwdriver bit to tighten each screw evenly.
- Torque to 1.7 Nm (15 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the screws; the sensor housing and air-cleaner mounting area can crack.
Step 7: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Align the connector and push it onto the new sensor by hand until the locking tab clicks.
- Gently pull on the connector housing to verify it is locked. Do not pull on the wires.
- Inspect the intake duct and air-filter housing by hand to ensure nothing was loosened during the repair.
Step 8: Start the Engine
- Remove all tools from the engine compartment and close the hood securely.
- Start the engine and let it idle for several minutes without pressing the accelerator.
- Listen for rough running and verify that no warning message appears.

- ✅ The engine computer normally adapts to the new MAF sensor automatically; programming is not normally required.
