🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Relieve the fuel pressure
- Use the nylon trim-removal tool to lift the front edge of the rear seat cushion sharply upward, releasing the two floor retainers.
- Lift the cushion slightly, release any wire retainers by hand, and move the cushion outside the work area.
- Use the nylon trim-removal tool to lift the fuel-pump service-hole cover enough to reach the electrical connector.
- Press the locking tab by hand and disconnect the fuel-pump electrical connector.
- Start the engine and let it run until it stalls. Crank it for approximately three additional seconds, then switch the ignition off.
- This removes pressure, not all gasoline.
Step 2: Disconnect the battery
- Open the trunk and locate the battery on the right side behind the trim cover.
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative clamp from the post and position it where it cannot spring back into contact.
- Wait at least 90 seconds before continuing.
Step 3: Expose and clean the pump module
- Use the nylon trim-removal tool and plastic scraper to lift the service-hole cover without bending it.
- Use the shop vacuum rated for dry debris to remove dirt around the pump opening. Do not vacuum gasoline or wet fuel residue.
- Use clean lint-free shop towels to wipe the top of the module and surrounding metal.
- Cleanliness keeps dirt out of the tank.
Step 4: Disconnect the fuel line
- Place the fuel-resistant drain pan and clean lint-free shop towels around the connection.
- Use the small flat-blade screwdriver or fuel-line disconnect pick to release the connector’s locking retainer without forcing it.
- Pull the connector straight from the pump pipe by hand. Catch the small amount of gasoline that escapes.
- Cover the disconnected line with a clean lint-free shop towel. Do not insert plugs that may damage or contaminate the connector.
- Inspect the connector and replace its retainer clip if cracked, stretched, or distorted.
Step 5: Mark and remove the retaining ring
- Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to place a light alignment mark across the retaining ring and tank opening without scratching the sealing surface.
- Fit the Toyota fuel pump retaining-ring wrench over the ring. This specialty wrench grips the large ring without creating sparks or breaking its tabs.
- Use the 3/8-inch drive ratchet with the retaining-ring wrench to turn the ring counterclockwise.
- Remove the ring by hand and place it on a clean lint-free shop towel.
- Do not use a steel punch, chisel, or impact tool.
Step 6: Remove the old pump module
- Lift the module slowly by hand while keeping it as upright as possible.
- Tilt the module only enough to guide the fuel-level float through the opening without bending its arm.
- Allow fuel inside the reservoir to drain back into the tank, then place the module in the fuel-resistant drain pan.
- Remove the old tank seal by hand and discard it.
- Use clean lint-free shop towels to clean the sealing surface. Do not let debris fall into the tank.
Step 7: Install the new pump module
- Compare the new and old modules in the fuel-resistant drain pan. Verify that the connector, fuel outlet, locating tab, and float-arm direction match.
- Install the new fuel pump module tank seal into the tank opening by hand. Do not reuse the flattened old seal.
- Guide the float into the tank carefully and lower the module straight into place.
- Align the module locating tab with the matching slot in the tank opening. Do not rotate or pinch the seal.
- Never force the float past the opening.
Step 8: Secure the pump module
- Install the retaining ring by hand and turn it clockwise until its threads or locking ramps engage evenly.
- Fit the Toyota fuel pump retaining-ring wrench and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench.
- Tighten the retaining ring to 85 Nm (63 ft-lbs).
- Confirm the ring is seated evenly and the module has not rotated out of alignment.
Step 9: Reconnect the fuel line and wiring
- Push the fuel-line connector straight onto the pump outlet by hand until it clicks.
- Install the connector retainer clip by hand, then pull gently on the line to confirm it is locked.
- Reconnect the pump electrical connector by hand until its locking tab clicks.
- Leave the service-hole cover open so the connection can be checked for leaks.
Step 10: Reconnect the battery and prime the system
- Place the negative battery clamp onto the battery post.
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the terminal clamp to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Switch the ignition to ON for five seconds without starting the engine, then switch it OFF for ten seconds.
- Repeat the ON/OFF cycle three times to fill and pressurize the new pump module.
Step 11: Check for leaks and reinstall the seat
- Use the safety glasses and a flashlight to inspect the fuel connector and retaining-ring area. Do not use a flame-style light.
- Start the engine and inspect again. If fuel or strong fresh-fuel odor appears, switch the engine off immediately and correct the connection.
- After confirming the area is completely dry, reseal the service-hole cover using the original seal if intact or fuel-resistant service-hole sealing tape.
- Position the rear seat cushion, route any wiring correctly, and align both front retainers.
- Push firmly downward by hand over each retainer until both click into place.
- Pull upward lightly on the cushion to confirm it is secured.

- ✅ Let the engine idle for five minutes and confirm it starts normally without extended cranking.
