🔧 Elantra - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap is a quick repair. A worn seal or damaged cap can allow fuel vapors to escape and may trigger the check-engine light.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area away from flames, sparks, cigarettes, and hot surfaces.
- 🧤 Avoid touching gasoline residue with bare skin.
- ⛽ Do not remove the cap while the engine is running.
- 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nylon trim removal tool (specialty)
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Tethered fuel filler cap with sealing gasket - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Elantra on level ground, shift into Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the engine.
- 🔥 Allow nearby exhaust components to cool before beginning.
- 🔑 Keep the ignition switched off throughout the repair.
- 🧩 Compare the replacement cap with the old cap. The sealing gasket, threads, and tether arrangement should match.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Fuel Door
- Put on the safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- With the vehicle unlocked, pull the fuel-door release lever beside the driver’s seat.
- Open the fuel door by hand.
Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap
- Use your gloved hand to turn the cap slowly counterclockwise.
- Pause briefly if you hear pressure escaping, then finish removing the cap.
- Do not use pliers because they can damage the filler neck.
Step 3: Disconnect the Retaining Tether
- Examine where the plastic tether attaches inside the fuel-door area.
- If it uses a push-in anchor, carefully lift the anchor with the nylon trim removal tool. A trim tool is a smooth plastic lever that removes clips without scratching paint.
- If the tether slips over a molded post, remove it from the post by hand.
- Keep the clip from falling behind the panel.
Step 4: Inspect the Filler Neck
- Use your gloved hand to wipe loose dirt from around the filler opening with a clean portion of the glove.
- Check that the metal sealing surface is smooth and that nothing is lodged in the threads.
- Do not push cloth, tools, or debris into the filler neck.
Step 5: Install the New Fuel Cap
- Attach the new tether to the original mounting point by hand.
- If equipped with a push-in anchor, press it firmly into its hole using the flat side of the nylon trim removal tool.
- Place the new cap squarely onto the filler neck.
- Use your gloved hand to turn the cap clockwise until it clicks at least once.
- No numerical torque specification applies; the cap’s internal ratchet controls tightening.
Step 6: Close the Fuel Door
- Confirm that the tether is not twisted or trapped between the cap and filler neck.
- Place the tether so it will not become pinched by the fuel door.
- Push the fuel door closed by hand until it latches flush with the body.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start the engine and verify that there is no fuel smell around the fuel door.
- 🔍 Recheck that the fuel door closes fully and the cap remains secure.
- 🚨 If a loose-cap warning or check-engine light was caused by the old cap, it may take several normal drive cycles to turn off.
- 🛠️ If the warning remains after several trips, an OBD-II scan is needed to check for an EVAP-system leak. EVAP is the system that contains and monitors fuel vapors.
