🔧 F-150 - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap is a quick repair. A damaged or loose cap can allow fuel vapors to escape and may turn on the check-engine light.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Park outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, away from flames, sparks, and cigarettes.
- 🧤 Wear gloves and avoid touching spilled fuel.
- ⛽ Do not perform this repair while refueling or while the engine is running.
- 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses
- Fuel-resistant nitrile gloves
- Small nylon trim removal tool
- Clean microfiber shop towel
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Threaded fuel cap with tether for the F-150 - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your F-150 on level ground, shift into Park, apply the parking brake, and switch the engine off.
- 🌡️ Allow the vehicle to cool if it was recently driven.
- 🧼 Use a clean microfiber shop towel to remove dirt around the fuel door before opening it.
- 🔍 Compare the new cap with the old one. The seal, threads, and tether arrangement should match.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Fuel Door
- Put on the ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses and fuel-resistant nitrile gloves.
- Open the fuel door by hand.
- Use a clean microfiber shop towel to wipe loose dirt from around the filler opening.
Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap
- Turn the old cap counterclockwise by hand until it releases from the filler neck.
- Inspect the filler-neck threads. Wipe away loose dirt with the clean microfiber shop towel.
- Do not push debris into the filler neck.
Step 3: Disconnect the Tether
- Locate the tether attachment on the inside of the fuel-filler area.
- If it uses a push-in plastic retainer, gently lift the retainer with the small nylon trim removal tool. A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that removes clips without scratching painted surfaces.
- If the tether uses a loop or snap fitting, release it by hand instead of prying it.
- Keep the old clip if the new cap lacks one.
Step 4: Attach the New Tether
- Position the new tether the same way as the original so it cannot become trapped in the fuel door.
- Press the tether retainer into its mounting hole by hand until fully seated.
- If needed, use the flat face of the small nylon trim removal tool to press the retainer evenly.
- Pull lightly on the tether to verify that it is secure.
Step 5: Install the New Fuel Cap
- Place the cap squarely against the filler neck and turn it clockwise by hand.
- Continue turning until the cap clicks at least once. The internal ratchet controls tightening, so no torque wrench is required.
- Gently pull on the cap to confirm that it is locked.
- Never use pliers to tighten a fuel cap.
Step 6: Check the Fuel Door
- Arrange the tether inside the filler pocket by hand.
- Close the fuel door and confirm that it sits flush without pinching the tether.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start your F-150 and verify that there is no fuel smell around the filler area.
- 💡 If a loose-cap or evaporative-emissions warning was present, it may clear automatically after several normal driving cycles.
- 🔍 If the check-engine light remains on, the evaporative-emissions system may have another leak that requires diagnostic testing.
- ⛽ Recheck the cap after the next refueling stop and make sure it clicks when tightened.
