Replacing the fuel cap is a simple repair. A damaged cap or seal can allow fuel vapors to escape and may turn on the check-engine light.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Tundra on level ground and shift the transmission into Park.
  • Turn the ignition completely off and engage the parking brake.
  • Wait until the fuel filler area is cool before starting.
  • No scan-tool or infotainment preparation is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

  • Put on the nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Open the fuel door by hand on the driver-side rear quarter panel.
  • Use the clean lint-free microfiber cloth to wipe loose dirt from around the cap without pushing debris into the filler neck.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap

  • Turn the old fuel cap counterclockwise by hand until it releases.
  • Remove it slowly in case the tank has slight vapor pressure.
  • Do not place the open filler neck near a dirty cap or cloth.

Step 3: Disconnect the Retaining Tether

  • Inspect where the cap’s rubber retaining tether attaches inside the fuel-door area.
  • Release the tether retainer by hand. Compress its flexible tabs and pull it straight out of its mounting hole.
  • A retainer is the small plastic fastener securing the tether to the truck.
  • Do not pry against the painted bodywork.

Step 4: Inspect the Filler Neck

  • Use the clean lint-free microfiber cloth to wipe only the sealing surface at the mouth of the filler neck.
  • Check that the sealing surface is smooth and free of rust, dents, or hardened gasket material.
  • Do not insert the cloth or any tool into the filler neck.

Step 5: Install the New Fuel Cap

  • Press the new tether retainer into its mounting hole by hand until it is fully seated.
  • Place the new fuel cap squarely onto the filler neck.
  • Turn the cap clockwise by hand until it clicks once. No measured torque is required because the cap’s ratcheting mechanism controls tightening.
  • One firm click confirms proper tightening.

Step 6: Close the Fuel Door

  • Check by hand that the tether is not twisted or trapped.
  • Close the fuel door by hand and verify that it sits flush with the body.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Tundra and confirm there is no fuel smell around the filler area.
  • If a loose-cap message was present, it may clear after several normal drive cycles.
  • If the check-engine light remains on, an OBD-II scan tool may be needed to identify or clear an evaporative-emissions fault code.
  • Do not assume the cap caused the warning if it returns; the evaporative-emissions system may have another leak.
