๐ง Tacoma - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap on your Tacoma is a very beginner-friendly repair. A worn, loose, or leaking fuel cap can trigger an evaporative emissions warning, fuel smell, or a check engine light related to the EVAP system.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes

๐ Before You Begin
- ๐ ฟ๏ธ Park your Tacoma on level ground and shift to Park.
- ๐ Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
- โฝ Work in a well-ventilated area.
- ๐งผ Wipe dirt away from the fuel door area with a clean microfiber towel so debris does not fall near the filler neck.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Fuel Door
- Use your hand to open the fuel door on the driver-side rear quarter panel.
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses before handling the fuel cap area.
- Keep dirt away from the filler opening.
Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap
- Use your hand to turn the old fuel cap counterclockwise until it comes loose.
- If your Tacoma has a tether, gently slide or unclip the tether from the fuel door holder by hand.
- A tether is the small plastic strap that keeps the cap attached to the truck.
- No torque spec applies to removal.
Step 3: Inspect the Fuel Filler Neck
- Use a clean microfiber towel to gently wipe the sealing surface around the filler neck.
- The sealing surface is the smooth rim where the fuel cap gasket presses to make an airtight seal.
- Do not push dirt into the filler opening.
- If you see rust, damage, or a bent filler neck, the new cap may not seal correctly.
Step 4: Install the New Fuel Cap
- If the new cap has a tether, attach it to the same fuel door holder by hand.
- Place the new fuel cap squarely onto the filler neck.
- Use your hand to turn the cap clockwise until it clicks.
- For Toyota screw-type caps, tighten until you hear at least one clear click.
- Torque to hand-tight only; do not use tools.
- One click is usually enough.
Step 5: Close the Fuel Door
- Use your hand to close the fuel door until it sits flush with the body.
- Make sure the tether is not pinched between the fuel door and body.
โ After Repair
- โ Start your Tacoma and check that there is no fuel smell around the fuel door.
- ๐ก If the check engine light was on because of a loose or leaking cap, it may take several drive cycles to turn off on its own.
- ๐ If the light stays on after several days of normal driving, scan for EVAP codes before replacing more parts.
- โฝ After your next fuel stop, always tighten the cap until it clicks.
