🔧 Sentra - Fuel Cap Replacement

The fuel cap seals the fuel tank and prevents gasoline vapors from escaping. Replace it if the seal is cracked, the cap no longer clicks, or a loose-cap warning or EVAP-related check-engine light appears.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔥 Work outdoors, away from cigarettes, flames, sparks, and hot objects.
  • 🧤 Avoid touching spilled gasoline; wash exposed skin immediately.
  • ⛽ Do not remove the cap while the engine is running.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Plastic trim removal tool (specialty)
  • Fuel-resistant nitrile gloves
  • ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel tank filler cap with sealing gasket and tether - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Sentra on level ground, shift into Park, apply the parking brake, and turn the engine off.
  • ⏳ Wait briefly after shutting off the engine before opening the fuel door.
  • 🔍 Compare the replacement cap with the old cap. The sealing gasket, threads, and tether arrangement should match.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

  • Wear the fuel-resistant nitrile gloves and ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses.
  • Use a gloved hand to pull the fuel-door release lever beside the driver’s seat.
  • Open the released fuel door by hand.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap

  • Use a gloved hand to turn the old cap counterclockwise slowly.
  • Allow any slight pressure to escape, then continue turning until the cap comes off.
  • Place the cap in its holder on the inside of the fuel door if equipped.

Step 3: Disconnect the Retaining Tether

  • Inspect where the cap’s tether attaches to the fuel door.
  • Use the plastic trim removal tool to gently lift the tether’s plastic retaining clip from its mounting hole.
  • Do not pry against the painted outer surface of the fuel door.
  • Support the clip to prevent breaking it.

Step 4: Inspect the Filler Neck

  • Use your gloved hand to wipe away loose dirt around the filler opening without pushing debris into the tank.
  • Check that the filler-neck threads are clean and undamaged.
  • Do not use metal tools, solvents, grease, or sealant on the filler neck.

Step 5: Install the New Cap Tether

  • Align the replacement tether clip with the original mounting hole.
  • Use your gloved thumb to press the clip straight into place until fully seated.
  • If extra pressure is needed, use the flat face of the plastic trim removal tool without forcing the clip.

Step 6: Install and Tighten the New Fuel Cap

  • Place the new cap squarely onto the filler neck using a gloved hand.
  • Turn the cap clockwise until its ratcheting mechanism clicks.
  • Continue until you hear at least one clear click. A numeric torque specification does not apply because the cap is hand-tightened by its built-in ratchet.
  • Gently pull the cap to verify it is secure, then close the fuel door.

✅ After Repair

  • 🚗 Start your Sentra and confirm that the fuel-cap warning is no longer displayed.
  • 💡 If the check-engine light was caused only by the loose or leaking cap, it may require several normal driving cycles to turn off automatically.
  • 🔎 If the warning remains after several trips, have the EVAP system scanned for diagnostic trouble codes. EVAP means the system that contains and checks fuel vapors.
  • 👃 Stop and inspect the cap immediately if you smell strong gasoline fumes.
