Step-by-step DIY instructions with required parts, tools, and safety tips for 1987
🔧 Pathfinder - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap is a quick repair. A worn seal can allow fuel vapors to escape and may trigger a loose-cap warning or check-engine light.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the engine off and keep flames, cigarettes, and sparks away.
- 🧤 Wear nitrile gloves and avoid touching spilled gasoline.
- 🧯 Do not perform this repair while the Pathfinder is being refueled.
- 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nylon trim-removal tool (specialty)
- Fuel-resistant nitrile gloves
- ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses
- Clean lint-free shop towel
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Fuel filler cap with sealing gasket and tether - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Pathfinder outdoors on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and turn the engine off.
- ⏳ If the vehicle was recently driven, wait a few minutes before opening the fuel cap.
- 🔍 Confirm the replacement cap is designed for the Pathfinder’s sealed evaporative-emissions system.
- 📱 No infotainment menu, scan-tool command, or battery procedure is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Fuel Door
- Put on the fuel-resistant nitrile gloves and ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses.
- Unlock your Pathfinder, then press the rear edge of the fuel-filler door by hand to open it.
- Use the clean lint-free shop towel to wipe dirt from around the cap before removal.
Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap
- Turn the old cap counterclockwise by hand until it releases.
- Remove it slowly in case a small amount of vapor pressure is present.
- Locate the tether attachment on the inside of the fuel door. The tether is the flexible strap that keeps the cap attached to the vehicle.
- Use the nylon trim-removal tool to gently release the tether clip from its mounting hole. Do not pry against the painted outer surface.
- Support the clip while prying gently.
Step 3: Inspect the Filler Neck
- Use the clean lint-free shop towel to wipe the filler-neck sealing surface.
- Check for rust, dents, or debris where the cap gasket seals. Do not push dirt into the filler opening.
- Do not use grease, oil, or sealant on the new cap gasket.
Step 4: Attach the New Tether
- Align the new tether clip with the original mounting hole.
- Press the clip into place by hand until it is fully seated.
- If light pressure is needed, use the flat face of the nylon trim-removal tool. Do not force or bend the clip.
- Verify that the tether is not twisted and cannot become trapped behind the fuel door.
Step 5: Install the New Fuel Cap
- Place the new cap squarely onto the filler neck by hand.
- Turn it clockwise until the ratcheting mechanism clicks at least once.
- No numerical torque specification applies; the cap’s clicking mechanism controls tightening.
- Gently pull on the cap by hand to confirm it is secure, then close the fuel door.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start your Pathfinder and confirm the cap remains secure with no fuel smell around the filler door.
- 🚨 If a loose-cap message was present, it may clear after several normal driving trips.
- 🔎 If the check-engine light remains on, the evaporative-emissions system may need code scanning. Do not erase codes before recording them.
- ♻️ Keep the old cap away from heat and dispose of it according to local household hazardous-waste guidance if contaminated with fuel.
