🔧 4Runner - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap is a simple job. A new cap restores the seal that keeps fuel vapors inside the tank and can correct an illuminated check-engine light caused by a loose or damaged cap.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔥 Park outdoors, switch the engine off, and keep flames, cigarettes, sparks, and hot tools away.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses because fuel vapor may escape when the cap is opened.
  • ⛽ Do not perform this repair while the 4Runner is being refueled.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Plastic trim removal tool (specialty)
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber cloth

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel tank filler cap with tether - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park the 4Runner on level ground, shift into Park, apply the parking brake, and turn the ignition off.
  • 🌬️ Work in a well-ventilated outdoor area.
  • 🔍 Compare the new cap with the old cap. The sealing gasket, thread shape, and tether attachment must match.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

  • Use no tool for this step. Open the driver-side fuel door by pulling outward at its rear edge.
  • Put on the nitrile gloves and safety glasses before touching the cap.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap

  • Use your hand to turn the cap counterclockwise slowly. A brief release of vapor pressure can be normal.
  • Continue turning until the cap separates from the filler neck.
  • Use the plastic trim removal tool to gently release the tether anchor from the fuel-door hole.
  • A trim removal tool is a smooth plastic lever that releases clips without scratching painted surfaces.
  • Do not use a metal screwdriver because it can damage the paint or tether anchor.

Step 3: Inspect and Clean the Filler Neck

  • Use the clean microfiber cloth to wipe the flat sealing surface around the filler opening.
  • Check for dirt, rust, dents, or damage that could prevent the new gasket from sealing.
  • Do not push the cloth or debris into the filler neck.
  • Keep the sealing surface clean and completely dry.

Step 4: Attach the New Tether

  • Use your hand to align the new tether anchor with the original hole in the fuel door.
  • Press the anchor straight into place until it is fully seated.
  • If needed, use the plastic trim removal tool to guide the anchor without forcing it.
  • Confirm that the tether is not twisted and cannot become trapped between the cap and filler neck.

Step 5: Install the New Fuel Cap

  • Use your hand to place the cap squarely against the filler neck.
  • Turn the cap clockwise until one distinct click is heard.
  • No torque wrench is used. Toyota specifies tightening the cap until it clicks.
  • Gently pull on the cap to confirm it is secure, then close the fuel door.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the 4Runner and confirm there is no strong fuel odor around the fuel door.
  • 💡 If a loose-cap warning was displayed, verify that it clears after the cap is tightened.
  • 🚗 A check-engine light caused by the old cap may require several normal driving trips to switch off automatically.
  • 🛠️ If the light remains on, the evaporative-emissions system should be checked for stored diagnostic trouble codes and leaks.
