🔧 Elantra - Engine Air Filter Replacement

The engine air filter sits inside the black air-cleaner housing beside the engine. Replacing a dirty filter restores proper airflow and helps keep dust out of your Elantra’s engine.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10–15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧊 Let the engine cool completely before working under the hood.
  • 🔑 Switch off the ignition, remove the key, and keep the transmission in 1st gear with the parking brake applied.
  • 🧹 Do not allow dirt, leaves, or tools to fall into the exposed intake opening.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Microfiber cleaning cloth

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter for 2.0L gasoline engine - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Elantra on level ground, apply the parking brake, shift into 1st gear, and switch off the engine.
  • 🌡️ Wait until the engine compartment is cool enough to touch safely.
  • 📦 Keep the new filter sealed until the old filter has been removed.
  • 📱 No infotainment setting, scan tool, service mode, or battery reset is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood

  • Put on the safety glasses and nitrile work gloves.
  • Pull the hood-release lever beneath the driver’s side of the dashboard.
  • Move to the front of your Elantra, release the secondary hood latch, and raise the hood.
  • Secure the hood with its support rod.

Step 2: Locate the Air-Cleaner Housing

  • Find the large black plastic box near the front corner of the engine compartment. A wide intake hose connects this box to the engine.
  • This box is the air-cleaner housing, which holds the engine air filter.
  • Use your gloved hands to check that the surrounding area is free of loose dirt.

Step 3: Release the Housing Clips

  • Use your gloved fingers to release the metal retaining clips around the edge of the air-cleaner housing lid.
  • A retaining clip is a spring-loaded metal fastener that holds the lid closed.
  • Leave the intake hose and electrical connections attached.
  • No bolts are removed, so there is no torque specification for this step.

Step 4: Remove the Old Filter

  • Use both gloved hands to lift the housing lid only far enough to access the filter.
  • Note the old filter’s orientation before lifting it straight out by its edges.
  • Do not shake loose dust over the open lower housing.
  • Take a photo before removing the filter.

Step 5: Clean and Inspect the Housing

  • Use the microfiber cleaning cloth to wipe loose dust from the lower housing.
  • Keep the cloth away from the open intake passage leading toward the engine.
  • Inspect the housing for leaves, moisture, cracks, or signs that rodents have entered it.
  • Do not use compressed air because it can push debris into the intake.

Step 6: Install the New Filter

  • Use your gloved hands to place the new filter into the lower housing in the same orientation as the old filter.
  • Make sure the rubber sealing edge sits flat and evenly inside its channel.
  • Do not force, bend, oil, or trim the filter.
  • A raised seal will cause an air leak.

Step 7: Close the Housing

  • Use both gloved hands to align the housing lid with its locating tabs and lower it into position.
  • Check the entire edge to confirm that the filter seal is not pinched.
  • Use your gloved fingers to secure every metal retaining clip.
  • No fasteners require tightening, so no torque specification applies.

Step 8: Finish the Repair

  • Use your gloved hands to check that the lid is seated evenly and cannot lift at any corner.
  • Confirm that the intake hose and nearby electrical connector were not loosened.
  • Return the hood support rod to its holder and lower the hood securely.

✅ After Repair

  • 🚗 Start the engine and let it idle for about one minute.
  • 👂 Listen for a loud hissing or whistling sound, which may indicate that the housing lid or filter seal is not seated correctly.
  • 💡 Confirm that no warning light appears on the instrument panel.
  • 📝 Record the replacement date and odometer reading. Inspect the filter more often when driving in dusty Haryana conditions.
  • ♻️ Place the old filter in a bag and dispose of it with normal dry waste where local rules permit.
