🔧 CR-V - Engine Air Filter Replacement

The engine air filter sits inside the air-cleaner housing and prevents dust from entering the engine. Replacement involves releasing the housing clips, exchanging the filter, and checking that the housing seals correctly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Switch the engine off and let it cool before working under the hood.
  • 🛑 Keep loose clothing and tools away from the cooling fans; they can start automatically.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.
  • 🧹 Do not allow dirt, leaves, or tools to fall into the open air-cleaner housing.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile mechanic gloves
  • LED inspection flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Microfiber cleaning cloth

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter for 2.4L engine - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your CR-V on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
  • 🌡️ Allow the engine to cool before opening the air-cleaner housing.
  • 💡 Compare the new filter with the old filter before installation. Their length, width, and sealing edges must match.
  • 📱 No infotainment menu, scan tool, programming, or maintenance reset is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and Secure the Hood

  • Put on the safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves.
  • Use the interior hood-release handle, then release the secondary latch beneath the front edge of the hood with a gloved hand.
  • Raise the hood and secure it fully with the factory prop rod.

Step 2: Locate the Air-Cleaner Housing

  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to locate the black plastic air-cleaner housing in the engine compartment. The large intake tube connects this housing to the engine.
  • Inspect the housing perimeter and identify its retaining clips. These are spring-loaded metal latches that hold the upper and lower housing sections together.

Step 3: Release the Housing Clips

  • Use your gloved fingers to pull each retaining clip outward until it releases from the housing lid.
  • Keep the clips attached to the lower housing; they do not need to be removed.
  • No screws or bolts normally need to be removed, so there is no torque specification for this step.
  • Release clips gently to avoid bending them.

Step 4: Lift the Housing Lid

  • Use both gloved hands to lift the air-cleaner housing lid only far enough to access the filter.
  • Do not pull hard on the attached intake tube, wiring, or nearby hoses.
  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to note the old filter's position and sealing-edge orientation before removal.

Step 5: Remove the Old Filter

  • Use your gloved hands to lift the old engine air filter straight out of the lower housing.
  • Do not shake or strike the dirty filter near the open housing because loose dust could enter the clean-air passage.
  • Compare the old and new filters side by side using the LED inspection flashlight. Confirm that their dimensions and sealing edges match.

Step 6: Clean and Inspect the Housing

  • Use the microfiber cleaning cloth to wipe loose dust and leaves from the lower housing.
  • Keep the microfiber cleaning cloth away from the outlet opening that leads toward the engine.
  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to check that no cloth fibers, leaves, or debris remain inside.
  • Do not use compressed air because it can force dirt into the intake passage.

Step 7: Install the New Filter

  • Use clean gloved hands to place the new engine air filter into the lower housing in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Check with the LED inspection flashlight that the filter's sealing edge sits flat and evenly around the entire housing.
  • Do not apply oil or grease to the filter or its seal.
  • A raised seal can cause unfiltered airflow.

Step 8: Close and Secure the Housing

  • Use both gloved hands to align the housing lid with its locating tabs and lower it without shifting the filter.
  • Press the lid down gently, then use your gloved fingers to engage every retaining clip.
  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to inspect the housing seam. It must be even, with no visible filter material pinched between the halves.
  • The retaining clips require no measured torque; lock them completely by hand.

Step 9: Close the Hood

  • Use your gloved hand to return the hood prop rod to its storage clip.
  • Lower the hood and let it latch from a short distance rather than pressing on the hood panel.
  • Lift gently at the front edge with your gloved fingers to confirm the hood is securely latched.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and let it idle for about one minute.
  • 👂 Listen for an unusual whistle or rushing-air sound, which can indicate that the housing is not fully closed.
  • 🔍 If a warning light appears or the engine runs poorly, switch it off and recheck the filter seal, housing lid, clips, and intake tube.
  • 📅 Record the replacement date and odometer reading. No dashboard maintenance reset is required specifically for the engine air filter.
