🔧 Malibu - Engine Air Filter Replacement

The engine air filter sits inside the air-cleaner housing on the driver’s side of the engine compartment. Replacing a dirty filter helps maintain proper airflow, fuel economy, and turbocharger performance.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working under the hood.
  • 🛑 Keep dirt, tools, and loose clothing away from the exposed intake opening.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.
  • 🚫 Do not start your Malibu while the air-cleaner housing is open.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Torx T25 screwdriver
  • Small inspection flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile work gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter for 1.5L turbo engine - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Malibu on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the engine.
  • 🌡️ Wait until the engine compartment is cool enough to touch safely.
  • 🧼 Keep the new filter clean and dry. Do not apply oil to it.
  • 📱 No infotainment service mode or scan tool is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood

  • Pull the hood-release handle near the driver’s footwell.
  • Move to the front of your Malibu, release the secondary hood latch, and raise the hood.
  • Use the installed hood support system to secure it fully.

Step 2: Locate the Air-Cleaner Housing

  • Use the small inspection flashlight to locate the black plastic air-cleaner housing on the driver’s side of the engine compartment.
  • Identify the large intake tube running from the housing toward the engine.
  • The housing cover is the removable upper half of this box.

Step 3: Loosen the Housing-Cover Screws

  • Use the Torx T25 screwdriver to loosen each captive cover screw around the air-cleaner housing.
  • Captive screws remain attached to the cover after they are loosened.
  • Loosen the screws evenly until the cover is free. Do not force or remove the intake tube.
  • Keep downward pressure on the screwdriver to prevent stripping.

Step 4: Remove the Old Filter

  • Wear nitrile work gloves and safety glasses.
  • Carefully lift the housing cover only as far as needed.
  • Note how the old filter is positioned, then lift it straight out by its rubber edge.
  • Avoid dropping dirt into the clean-air opening beneath the cover.

Step 5: Inspect the Housing

  • Use the small inspection flashlight to check the lower housing for leaves, insects, or loose debris.
  • Remove loose debris carefully by hand while wearing nitrile work gloves.
  • Do not push dirt into the outlet leading toward the turbocharger.
  • Inspect the housing edge and confirm that no wiring or hoses have been disturbed.

Step 6: Install the New Filter

  • Place the new engine air filter into the lower housing in the same orientation as the old filter.
  • Press around the filter’s rubber sealing edge with your gloved fingers.
  • Confirm the seal lies flat inside its channel with no folds or raised corners.
  • A raised seal can allow unfiltered air inside.

Step 7: Refit the Housing Cover

  • Lower the cover squarely over the new filter.
  • Check that the cover is fully seated and the filter is not pinched.
  • Start every captive screw by hand with the Torx T25 screwdriver.
  • Tighten the screws gradually in an alternating pattern.
  • Torque to 2.5 Nm (22 in-lbs). This is inch-pounds, not foot-pounds.
  • If a torque screwdriver is unavailable, make the screws gently snug without forcing them; the plastic housing can crack.

Step 8: Perform a Final Inspection

  • Use the small inspection flashlight to check that the housing seam is even on every side.
  • Confirm all screws are secure and no tools remain in the engine compartment.
  • Lower the hood and press it closed firmly.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Malibu and let it idle for about one minute.
  • 👂 Listen for unusual whistling or hissing, which can indicate that the housing cover is not seated correctly.
  • 🔍 Check that the Check Engine light remains off.
  • 📘 Record the replacement date and odometer reading for future maintenance.
  • 🧹 Replace the filter more frequently when driving in Haryana’s dusty conditions or heavy traffic.
