🔧 Prius - Engine Air Filter Replacement
The engine air filter sits inside the air cleaner housing, which is the black plastic box that supplies clean air to the engine. Replacing a dirty filter helps maintain fuel economy, engine performance, and proper airflow.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Make sure the green READY indicator is off before opening the hood.
- Keep the key fob away from your Prius so the hybrid system cannot be started accidentally.
- Allow the engine to cool before working near the air cleaner housing.
- Do not touch orange high-voltage cables or connectors.
- Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- LED inspection flashlight
- Nitrile mechanic gloves
- Safety glasses

- Engine air filter - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Prius on level ground and apply the parking brake.
- Press the power button to turn the vehicle completely off. Verify the READY light is not illuminated.
- Open the hood and support it securely with the hood prop rod.
- No infotainment setting, scan tool, or hybrid-system isolation procedure is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the Air Cleaner Housing
- Put on the nitrile mechanic gloves and safety glasses.
- Use the LED inspection flashlight to locate the black plastic air cleaner housing in the engine compartment.
- The housing has an upper lid held to its lower section by metal retaining clips.
Step 2: Release the Housing Clips
- Use your gloved fingers to release the metal retaining clips around the edge of the air cleaner housing.
- Pull each clip outward only far enough to disengage it.
- Do not unplug or pull on the airflow-sensor wiring attached to the intake assembly.
- The clips release without screwdrivers or prying.
Step 3: Open the Housing
- Use your gloved hands to lift the air cleaner lid slightly.
- Move the lid only enough to access the filter. Do not strain the intake hose or wiring.
- Disengage the lid tabs from the slots on the opposite side if additional clearance is needed.
Step 4: Remove the Old Filter
- Use your gloved hands to lift the old engine air filter straight out of the lower housing.
- Notice how the filter’s sealing edge and pleats are positioned before removing it completely.
- Keep loose dirt from falling into the clean-air opening leading toward the engine.
Step 5: Inspect the Housing
- Use the LED inspection flashlight to check the lower housing for leaves, nesting material, or excessive dirt.
- Remove large loose debris carefully with your gloved fingers.
- Do not push dirt into the intake opening, and do not use compressed air inside the housing.
Step 6: Install the New Filter
- Use your gloved hands to place the new engine air filter into the lower housing in the same orientation as the old filter.
- Confirm the filter’s sealing edge sits flat and evenly around the entire housing.
- Do not force the filter. A correctly matched filter will sit fully inside the molded recess.
- A raised corner can allow unfiltered air inside.
Step 7: Close the Housing
- Use your gloved hands to engage the lid tabs with their matching slots.
- Lower the lid while checking that no wiring, hose, or filter edge is trapped.
- Push the metal retaining clips into place by hand until each one locks securely.
- No fasteners are removed, so there is no torque specification for this replacement.
Step 8: Perform a Final Inspection
- Use the LED inspection flashlight to confirm the housing seam is even on every side.
- Gently check the lid with your gloved hands. It should not lift or move away from the lower housing.
- Confirm all retaining clips are locked and the nearby wiring remains secure.
✅ After Repair
- Remove all tools from the engine compartment and close the hood securely.
- Start your Prius and verify that the green READY indicator appears normally.
- Listen for unusual intake whistling, which can indicate that the lid or filter seal is not seated correctly.
- Verify that no warning lights appear. No maintenance reset or scan-tool procedure is required.
- Inspect the filter more frequently when driving in Sonīpat’s dusty conditions.
