🔧 Tundra - Engine Air Filter Replacement

The engine air filter sits inside the black air-cleaner housing on the passenger side of your Tundra’s engine compartment. Replacing a dirty filter restores proper airflow and helps keep dust from entering the 5.7L V8.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the engine off and allow hot engine components to cool.
  • 🛑 Keep dirt, tools, and loose clothing away from the open intake housing.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required.
  • 📡 Do not unplug or pull on the mass airflow sensor wiring attached to the intake tube.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • LED inspection flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile mechanic gloves
  • Vacuum cleaner with crevice attachment

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter for 5.7L V8 - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Tundra on level ground, shift into Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
  • 🌡️ Wait until the engine compartment is cool enough to touch safely.
  • 💡 Use the LED inspection flashlight to locate the black air-cleaner housing near the passenger-side front corner of the engine compartment.
  • 📱 No infotainment setting, scan tool, programming, or filter reset is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and Secure the Hood

  • Pull the interior hood-release handle, then release the secondary latch under the front edge of the hood by hand.
  • Raise the hood fully. Your Tundra uses hood support struts, so verify that the hood stays securely raised before working underneath it.
  • Put on the safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves.

Step 2: Locate the Air-Cleaner Housing

  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to identify the large black plastic air-cleaner housing on the passenger side.
  • Follow the large intake tube from the engine toward the housing if you need help finding it.
  • The mass airflow sensor measures incoming air. Do not unplug its electrical connector for this service.

Step 3: Release the Housing Clips

  • Release each metal retaining clip around the air-cleaner cover by hand.
  • Keep one hand on the cover while releasing the final clip so the cover does not move suddenly.
  • No bolts or screws normally need to be removed.

Step 4: Lift the Housing Cover

  • Lift the air-cleaner cover slightly by hand while keeping the intake tube and sensor wiring relaxed.
  • Move the cover only far enough to remove the filter. Do not force or sharply bend the intake tube.
  • Take a photo of the filter orientation first.

Step 5: Remove the Old Filter

  • Lift the old engine air filter straight out by hand.
  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to check the lower housing for leaves, sand, or insects.
  • Do not allow debris to fall into the clean-air outlet leading toward the engine.

Step 6: Clean the Lower Housing

  • Use the vacuum cleaner with crevice attachment to remove loose debris from the bottom of the housing.
  • Keep the vacuum attachment away from the mass airflow sensor and clean-air opening.
  • Do not use compressed air because it can drive dirt farther into the intake system.

Step 7: Install the New Filter

  • Place the new engine air filter into the lower housing by hand in the same orientation as the old filter.
  • Press gently around the filter’s sealing edge. The seal must sit flat and fully inside its locating channel.
  • Do not apply oil, grease, or sealant to a standard dry replacement filter.

Step 8: Close the Housing

  • Lower the air-cleaner cover by hand without shifting the filter.
  • Make sure the cover is evenly seated and no part of the filter seal is pinched outside the housing.
  • Fasten every metal retaining clip by hand. No torque specification applies because no threaded fasteners are removed.
  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to inspect the entire seam for an even fit.

Step 9: Final Inspection

  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to verify that the intake tube, mass airflow sensor connector, and nearby hoses remain secure.
  • Remove the vacuum cleaner, flashlight, and all other items from the engine compartment.
  • Lower the hood carefully by hand and confirm that it latches completely.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and let it idle for approximately one minute.
  • 👂 Listen for a loud sucking or whistling noise, which may indicate that the housing cover is not seated correctly.
  • 🚨 Confirm that no warning lights appear. If the check-engine light comes on, switch off the engine and inspect the mass airflow sensor connector and housing seal.
  • 📅 Inspect the filter more frequently when driving in Sonīpat’s dusty conditions. Replace it whenever it is heavily loaded, damaged, wet, or no longer seals correctly.
  • 🧾 Record the replacement date and odometer reading for maintenance tracking.
