🔧 Avalon - Engine Air Filter Replacement

The engine air filter is inside the air-cleaner housing near the front-left side of your Avalon’s engine compartment. Replacing it restores proper airflow and helps keep dust from entering the 3.5L V6.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the engine off and allow it to cool before working under the hood.
  • 🛑 Keep dirt, tools, and loose objects out of the open intake housing.
  • 🔌 Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.
  • 🧤 Do not pull on the nearby wiring or mass airflow sensor connector.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile work gloves
  • LED flashlight
  • Clean microfiber cloth
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter for 3.5L V6 - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Avalon on level ground, select Park, and apply the parking brake.
  • 🌡️ Switch off the engine and wait until the engine compartment is cool.
  • 🔑 Keep the smart key away from the vehicle so nobody starts the engine.
  • 📱 No infotainment setting, scan tool, or maintenance mode is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and Secure the Hood

  • 🧤 Put on the nitrile work gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use the interior hood-release handle below the driver-side dashboard.
  • Release the secondary latch at the front of the hood, then raise the hood.
  • The hood supports itself with its lift struts; verify it remains fully open before proceeding.

Step 2: Locate the Air-Cleaner Housing

  • 🔦 Use the LED flashlight to locate the black plastic air-cleaner housing at the front-left area of the engine compartment.
  • Follow the large black intake tube from the engine toward the rectangular housing.
  • The air filter sits between the housing’s upper cover and lower tray.

Step 3: Release the Housing Clips

  • 🧤 Use your gloved fingers to release the metal retaining clips along the edge of the air-cleaner cover.
  • Pull each clip outward until it disengages from the cover.
  • Do not disconnect the intake hose or nearby electrical connector.
  • No bolts are removed, so there is no torque specification for this step.

Step 4: Lift the Air-Cleaner Cover

  • 🧤 Use both gloved hands to lift the clipped side of the cover slightly.
  • Move the cover only far enough to access the filter, keeping the intake tube attached.
  • Disengage the cover’s opposite-side locating tabs carefully if additional clearance is needed.
  • Do not force the attached intake tube.

Step 5: Remove the Old Filter

  • 🧤 Use your gloved fingers to lift the old engine air filter straight out.
  • Notice how the filter sits in the lower housing before removing it completely.
  • Keep the dirty side facing downward to avoid dropping debris into the housing.

Step 6: Clean and Inspect the Housing

  • 🧽 Use the clean microfiber cloth to wipe loose dust from the lower housing.
  • Do not push the cloth into the intake opening or leave fibers inside the housing.
  • Use the LED flashlight to verify that no leaves, dirt, or packaging remain inside.
  • Do not use compressed air because it can force debris farther into the intake.

Step 7: Install the New Filter

  • 🧤 Use your gloved hands to place the new filter into the lower housing in the same orientation as the old filter.
  • Seat the filter’s sealing edge evenly inside the housing channel.
  • Run a gloved finger around the perimeter to confirm the seal is flat and not folded.
  • A pinched seal allows unfiltered air inside.

Step 8: Close the Housing

  • 🧤 Use both gloved hands to engage the cover’s locating tabs first.
  • Lower the cover evenly without shifting the filter.
  • Use your gloved fingers to secure every metal retaining clip over the cover edge.
  • Confirm there is no visible gap between the upper cover and lower housing.
  • The clips are hand-fastened, so there is no torque specification.

Step 9: Final Inspection and Hood Closure

  • 🔦 Use the LED flashlight to inspect the intake tube, housing clips, and nearby wiring.
  • Use your gloved hands to gently check that the housing cover cannot lift.
  • Lower the hood carefully, then press it closed from the front edge.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and let it idle for approximately one minute.
  • 👂 Listen for hissing or unusually loud intake noise, which can indicate an improperly seated cover or filter.
  • 🚨 Confirm that no warning lights appear on the instrument panel.
  • 📅 No electronic service reset is required for the engine air filter.
  • 🔍 Recheck the filter during routine maintenance and replace it sooner in Sonīpat’s dusty driving conditions.
