🔧 Sienna - Engine Air Filter Replacement

The engine air filter keeps dust and debris from entering your Sienna’s engine. Replacement involves opening the air cleaner housing, commonly called the airbox, and installing a new filter.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Allow the engine to cool before working under the hood.
  • Keep dirt, tools, and loose clothing away from the open airbox.
  • Do not start the engine while the airbox is open.
  • Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves (5-mil minimum)
  • Safety glasses (ANSI Z87.1-rated)
  • LED flashlight (500-lumen minimum)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Sienna on level ground and apply the parking brake.
  • Shift the transmission into Park and turn the engine off.
  • Wait until the engine compartment is cool enough to touch safely.
  • Remove the new filter from its packaging, but keep it clean and dry.
  • No infotainment menu, scan tool, programming, or battery reset is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood

  • Wear the 5-mil nitrile gloves and ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses.
  • Pull the hood-release lever below the driver-side dashboard.
  • Release the secondary latch under the front edge of the hood using your gloved hand.
  • Raise the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.

Step 2: Locate the Airbox

  • Use the 500-lumen LED flashlight to locate the black plastic airbox in the engine compartment.
  • Follow the large black intake duct from the engine toward the airbox if needed.
  • The airbox is the two-piece plastic housing that holds the rectangular engine air filter.

Step 3: Release the Airbox Cover

  • Use your gloved hands to release the metal retaining clips along the airbox cover.
  • Move each clip fully away from the cover so it cannot catch while the cover is lifted.
  • Do not disconnect sensors or loosen the intake hose for a routine filter replacement.

Step 4: Lift the Airbox Cover

  • Use your gloved hands to lift the clipped side of the cover only far enough to access the filter.
  • Disengage the opposite cover tabs carefully without sharply pulling or twisting the attached intake duct.
  • Do not force the plastic cover.

Step 5: Remove the Old Filter

  • Use your gloved hands to note which side of the old filter faces upward.
  • Lift the old engine air filter straight out of the lower airbox.
  • Use the 500-lumen LED flashlight to inspect the airbox for leaves, dirt, or signs of water entry.
  • Do not allow debris to fall into the clean-air outlet leading toward the engine.

Step 6: Install the New Filter

  • Use your gloved hands to place the new filter into the lower airbox in the same orientation as the old filter.
  • Make sure the filter’s rubber sealing edge sits flat inside the entire housing channel.
  • Check with the 500-lumen LED flashlight that no corner is folded, raised, or trapped under the cover.

Step 7: Close the Airbox

  • Use your gloved hands to engage the cover tabs into their matching slots first.
  • Lower the clipped side of the cover while keeping the filter seal properly seated.
  • Secure every metal retaining clip by hand.
  • Confirm the cover is even on all sides and has no visible gap.
  • No fasteners are removed, so there is no torque specification for this repair.

Step 8: Close the Hood

  • Use your gloved hand to return the hood prop rod to its retaining clip.
  • Lower the hood and let it latch from approximately 8-12 inches above the closed position.
  • Lift gently at the front edge using your gloved hands to confirm the hood is fully latched.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for approximately one minute.
  • Listen for unusual whistling or rushing-air sounds that could indicate an improperly closed airbox.
  • If the engine runs poorly or a warning light appears, shut it off and recheck the filter seal, cover tabs, clips, intake duct, and nearby electrical connectors.
  • No filter reset, scan-tool procedure, or break-in period is required.
  • Inspect the filter more frequently when driving in dusty conditions.
