🔧 Cabin Air Filter - Replacement

Changing the cabin air filter on your RAV4 is a simple maintenance job that improves airflow from the vents and helps reduce dust, pollen, and odors inside the cabin.

The filter is located behind the glove box. No major disassembly is needed.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Park your RAV4 on a flat surface and turn the ignition completely off.
  • ⚠️ Do not force the glove box hinges or stops; the plastic can crack.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
  • ⚠️ Keep debris from falling into the HVAC housing, which is the plastic air box behind the glove box.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop vacuum with crevice nozzle
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your RAV4 on level ground.
  • 🔌 Turn the vehicle off and remove the key/fob from the cabin if possible.
  • 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • 🧹 Empty the glove box so items do not fall out when it is lowered.
  • ➡️ Check the airflow arrow on the new cabin air filter before installation. On this RAV4, the filter installs with the airflow direction arrow pointing down.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and Empty the Glove Box

  • Open the glove box fully by hand.
  • Remove all contents from the glove box.
  • Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe loose dust from the glove box opening.
  • Keep screws and clips away.

Step 2: Release the Glove Box Damper

  • Look on the right side of the glove box for the small plastic damper arm.
  • The damper arm is a small soft-drop support that slows the glove box as it opens.
  • Use your fingers to gently slide the damper arm off its mounting pin.
  • Do not use a screwdriver unless absolutely necessary, because the plastic clip can break.

Step 3: Lower the Glove Box

  • Use both hands to gently squeeze the left and right sides of the glove box inward.
  • This releases the side stops, which are the small molded tabs that keep the glove box from falling open too far.
  • Lower the glove box toward the floor.
  • Do not pull it off the lower hinges.

Step 4: Remove the Cabin Filter Cover

  • Behind the lowered glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter access cover.
  • Use your fingers to press the locking tab on the right side of the cover.
  • Pull the cover straight off by hand.
  • Set the cover aside where it will not get stepped on.

Step 5: Remove the Old Cabin Air Filter

  • Slide the old cabin air filter straight out by hand.
  • Note the arrow direction printed on the old filter before removing it completely.
  • Use a shop vacuum with crevice nozzle to gently remove leaves or loose debris from the filter opening.
  • Do not push the vacuum nozzle deep into the HVAC housing.
  • Dusty side usually faces upward.

Step 6: Install the New Cabin Air Filter

  • Hold the new cabin air filter so the airflow arrow points down.
  • Slide the new filter into the slot by hand.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and is not folded or crushed.
  • If the filter has a pull tab, leave the pull tab facing outward for easier future removal.

Step 7: Reinstall the Filter Cover

  • Line up the cabin filter cover with the housing by hand.
  • Push the cover into place until the locking tab clicks.
  • Gently tug the cover by hand to confirm it is latched.

Step 8: Raise and Secure the Glove Box

  • Raise the glove box by hand.
  • Use both hands to gently squeeze the glove box sides inward again.
  • Guide the side stops back past the dashboard opening.
  • Reconnect the right-side damper arm onto its mounting pin by hand.
  • Open and close the glove box once to confirm smooth movement.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your RAV4 or turn it to ready mode.
  • 🌬️ Turn the blower fan on low, then medium, then high.
  • 👂 Listen for rubbing, whistling, or rattling noises from behind the glove box.
  • 🌫️ Check airflow from the dash vents and defrost vents.
  • 🧾 Replace the cabin air filter about every 12 months or 10,000-15,000 miles, sooner in dusty areas.
