πŸ”§ Malibu - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter is located behind the glove box. Replacing it helps improve airflow and keeps dust, pollen, and road debris from entering the passenger compartment.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition and climate-control system off before starting.
  • 🧀 Wear gloves because the old filter may contain dust, pollen, or mold.
  • πŸ”‹ Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.

πŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • LED flashlight
  • Nitrile work gloves
  • Safety glasses

πŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

πŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • πŸš— Park your Malibu on level ground and shift the transmission into Park.
  • πŸ”‘ Turn the ignition off and remove everything from the glove box.
  • πŸ’¨ Switch the blower motor off so it cannot pull loose debris into the HVAC housing.
  • πŸ“± No infotainment menu, scan tool, programming, or battery reset is required.

πŸ”¨ Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Empty and Open the Glove Box

  • Put on the nitrile work gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use the LED flashlight to inspect both sides of the open glove box.
  • Remove all contents so nothing falls behind the dashboard.

Step 2: Release the Glove Box Damper

  • Use the LED flashlight to locate the small damper arm attached to the side of the glove box.
  • The damper is the small device that makes the glove box open slowly.
  • Support the glove box by hand, then carefully slide the damper connection off its mounting pin.
  • Do not pull sharply; the plastic connection can break.

Step 3: Lower the Glove Box

  • Use both gloved hands to press the upper left and right sides of the glove box inward.
  • Move the built-in stops past the dashboard opening, then gently rotate the glove box downward.
  • The glove box does not need to be completely removed.
  • Press one side inward at a time.

Step 4: Remove the Filter Access Cover

  • Use the LED flashlight to locate the rectangular cabin-filter cover behind the lowered glove box.
  • Use your gloved fingers to release the retaining tabs on the cover.
  • Pull the cover straight outward and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the Old Filter

  • Use the LED flashlight to note the direction of the airflow arrow printed on the old filter.
  • Use both gloved hands to pull the filter straight out without shaking it.
  • Look inside the housing with the flashlight and remove loose leaves by hand. Do not push debris deeper into the blower housing.

Step 6: Install the New Filter

  • Compare the new filter with the old one to confirm that their length, width, and thickness match.
  • Use the airflow marking on the old filter or housing as the reference, then position the new filter’s AIR FLOW arrow in that same direction.
  • Slide the filter evenly into the housing using both gloved hands.
  • Do not crush or sharply fold the filter media.

Step 7: Reinstall the Access Cover

  • Position the filter cover over the opening using both gloved hands.
  • Press it inward until every retaining tab clicks securely into place.
  • Use the LED flashlight to verify that the cover sits flush with the housing.

Step 8: Reinstall the Glove Box

  • Lift the glove box with both gloved hands.
  • Press its sides inward and guide the stops back behind the dashboard opening.
  • Reconnect the damper arm to its mounting pin by hand.
  • Open and close the glove box slowly to confirm smooth operation.

βœ… After Repair

  • βœ… Start your Malibu and run the blower through all speed settings.
  • πŸ‘‚ Listen for rubbing, fluttering, or clicking sounds behind the glove box.
  • πŸ’¨ Confirm that airflow from the vents is steady and the glove box closes normally.
  • πŸ“… Inspect the filter during routine service and replace it sooner in dusty conditions.
