🔧 Sonata - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter is located behind the glove box. Replacing it helps improve airflow and keeps dust, pollen, and road debris from entering the passenger compartment.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Park your Sonata on level ground and switch the ignition off.
  • Empty the glove box before lowering it so its contents do not fall out.
  • Support the glove box while releasing its stops to avoid damaging the hinges.
  • Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • LED inspection flashlight
  • Nitrile work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • HEPA shop vacuum with crevice attachment

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Place your Sonata in Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
  • Open the front passenger door and remove everything from the glove box.
  • Compare the new filter with the old one before installation. Their length, width, and thickness should match.
  • No infotainment settings, scan tools, or service modes are required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and support the glove box

  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to look along both inner sides of the open glove box.
  • Support the bottom of the glove box with one hand.
  • Locate the small damper arm on the right side. The damper slows the glove box as it opens.

Step 2: Disconnect the glove-box damper

  • Use your fingers to slide the loop on the damper arm off the glove-box pin.
  • Do not pull the arm sharply or pry it with a tool.
  • Keep one hand under the glove box.

Step 3: Release the glove-box stops

  • Use both hands to press the left and right sides of the glove box inward.
  • Continue pressing until the molded stops clear the dashboard opening.
  • Carefully rotate the glove box downward. Leave it attached at its lower hinges.

Step 4: Remove the filter-access cover

  • Use the LED inspection flashlight to locate the rectangular cabin-filter cover behind the glove box.
  • Use your fingers to squeeze the locking tabs on the cover.
  • Pull the cover straight outward and set it aside.
  • No fasteners are removed, so there is no torque specification for this repair.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Wear safety glasses and nitrile work gloves.
  • Use your fingers to pull the old filter straight out without shaking it.
  • Notice the direction of the airflow arrow printed on the old filter.
  • Use the HEPA shop vacuum with crevice attachment to remove loose debris from the housing opening. Do not push the attachment deeply into the HVAC case.

Step 6: Install the new filter

  • Use your hands to slide the new cabin air filter into the housing.
  • Install it with the AIR FLOW arrow pointing downward.
  • Keep the filter straight and avoid crushing or folding its pleats.
  • Never force the filter into the housing.

Step 7: Reinstall the access cover

  • Use your fingers to align the filter-access cover with the housing.
  • Press the cover into place until both locking tabs click securely.
  • Gently pull on the cover to confirm it is latched.

Step 8: Reinstall the glove box

  • Use both hands to raise the glove box toward its normal position.
  • Press both sides inward until the molded stops pass into the dashboard opening.
  • Use your fingers to reconnect the damper-arm loop to the pin on the right side.
  • Slowly open and close the glove box to confirm that it moves smoothly.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Sonata and run the blower through each fan speed.
  • Confirm that air flows normally and no rattling or fluttering noise comes from behind the glove box.
  • If airflow is restricted or noisy, switch the blower off and verify that the filter is seated flat with its airflow arrow pointing downward.
  • Check the filter about every 12 months or 12,000-15,000 miles. Inspect it more often in dusty conditions.
