- Empty the glove box before lowering it so objects do not fall onto the floor.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your 4Runner on level ground and place the transmission in Park.
- Switch off the ignition and climate-control system.
- Open the front passenger door and remove everything from the glove box.
- Compare the new filter with the old one before installation. Their outside dimensions should match.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and Empty the Glove Box
- Wear the nitrile work gloves and safety glasses.
- Open the glove box fully and remove its contents.
- Use the LED flashlight to locate the small damper arm attached to the right side of the glove box. The damper is the small link that makes the glove box open slowly.
Step 2: Disconnect the Glove-Box Damper
- Support the glove box with one hand.
- Use your fingers to pull the damper arm gently outward and off its mounting pin.
- Do not use a screwdriver or twist the arm.
Step 3: Lower the Glove Box
- Press both glove-box side walls inward with your hands until the built-in stops clear the dashboard opening.
- Lower the glove box carefully toward the floor. It can remain attached at its lower hinges.
- Press near the stops for easier release.
Step 4: Remove the Filter Access Cover
- Use the LED flashlight to find the rectangular cabin-filter cover behind the glove box.
- Press the cover’s locking tabs inward with your fingers.
- Pull the cover straight toward you and set it aside.
Step 5: Remove the Old Filter
- Grasp the old filter or its tray with your gloved fingers and slide it straight out.
- Note the arrow direction printed on the old filter before removing it completely.
- Use the LED flashlight to inspect the housing. Remove loose leaves by hand, but do not push debris deeper into the blower opening.
Step 6: Install the New Filter
- Place the new cabin air filter into the tray or housing without crushing its pleats.
- If the filter is marked UP, install that arrow pointing upward.
- If it is marked only AIR FLOW, install the arrow pointing downward, in the direction of airflow through the housing.
- Slide the filter fully into place and confirm that its edges are not folded.
Step 7: Reinstall the Filter Cover
- Position the access cover over the opening by hand.
- Press it evenly until both locking tabs click into place.
- Gently pull on the cover to verify that it is secure.
Step 8: Reinstall the Glove Box
- Raise the glove box and press both side walls inward with your hands.
- Guide the glove-box stops past the dashboard opening, then release the sides.
- Push the damper arm back onto its mounting pin with your fingers until seated.
- Open and close the glove box slowly to confirm smooth movement.
✅ After Repair
- Start your 4Runner and operate the blower at each fan speed.
- Confirm that airflow is strong and there are no rubbing, fluttering, or rattling noises.
- If a noise is present, switch the blower off and verify that the filter is flat and the access cover is fully latched.
- Replace the filter about every 12 months or 10,000-15,000 miles. Dusty driving around Haryana may require more frequent replacement.
