๐ง Ridgeline - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
The cabin air filter sits behind the glove box and removes dust, pollen, and debris from air entering the heating and air-conditioning system. Replacing it can improve airflow and reduce musty odors.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes
โ ๏ธ Safety & Precautions
- โ ๏ธ Turn the ignition off before working around the glove box.
- ๐งค Wear gloves because the old filter may contain dust, pollen, or insects.
- ๐ฆ Support the glove box as it lowers so its hinges are not overloaded.
- ๐ Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.
๐ง Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- LED flashlight
- Disposable nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- HEPA-filter shop vacuum with crevice attachment

๐ Before You Begin
- ๐ ฟ๏ธ Park your Ridgeline on level ground, shift into Park, and turn off the ignition.
- ๐งน Empty the glove box so its contents do not fall onto the floor.
- ๐ฌ๏ธ Turn the climate-control fan off.
- ๐ Compare the new filter with the old one before installation. Their outer dimensions should match.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lower the Glove Box
- Use the LED flashlight to inspect the right side of the open glove box.
- Use your gloved fingers to disconnect the glove-box damper arm from its mounting pin. The damper is the small arm that lets the glove box open slowly.
- Press both glove-box side walls inward with your gloved hands until the built-in stops clear the dashboard opening.
- Carefully lower the glove box toward the floor. Do not force its lower hinges.
- Press near the stops, not the hinges.
Step 2: Remove the Filter Access Cover
- Use the LED flashlight to locate the rectangular cabin-filter cover behind the glove box.
- Press the locking tabs at both ends of the cover inward with your gloved fingers.
- Pull the cover straight outward and set it aside.
Step 3: Remove the Old Filter
- Use your gloved fingers to slide the old cabin air filter straight out of the housing.
- Before turning it, use the LED flashlight to note the direction of the airflow arrow printed on the filter.
- Keep the dirty side facing upward while removing it so loose debris does not fall into the blower housing.
Step 4: Clean the Filter Housing
- Use the HEPA-filter shop vacuum with crevice attachment to gently remove visible leaves and loose debris near the filter opening.
- Do not push the attachment deep into the housing. The blower fan is below the filter area and can be damaged.
- Do not spray cleaners, fragrances, or water into the housing.
Step 5: Install the New Filter
- Use the LED flashlight to check the airflow marking on the new cabin air filter.
- Install an airflow-marked filter with its AIR FLOW arrow pointing downward, toward the blower motor.
- If the filter is marked only with an UP arrow, install that arrow pointing upward.
- Use your gloved fingers to slide the filter fully into the housing without folding or crushing its pleats.
- Arrow direction matters more than label orientation.
Step 6: Reinstall the Access Cover
- Use your gloved hands to align the cabin-filter cover with the housing.
- Push the cover straight inward until both locking tabs click into place.
- Use the LED flashlight to verify that the cover sits evenly and has no visible gaps.
Step 7: Reinstall the Glove Box
- Raise the glove box with your gloved hands.
- Press both side walls inward until the stops pass into the dashboard opening, then release them.
- Reconnect the damper arm to its mounting pin with your gloved fingers.
- Open and close the glove box slowly to confirm that it moves smoothly and does not drop abruptly.
โ After Repair
- โ Start your Ridgeline and run the climate-control fan through every speed.
- ๐ Listen for scraping, fluttering, or clicking. An unusual sound can indicate a folded filter or debris near the blower.
- ๐ฌ๏ธ Confirm that airflow comes normally from the selected vents.
- ๐ Inspect the filter during routine service and replace it sooner when driving in dusty or high-pollution conditions.
