🔧 Murano - 12-Volt Battery Replacement

The battery is under the hood on the driver’s side. Replacement involves removing the hold-down bracket, disconnecting the negative cable first, and installing a correctly sized Group 35 battery.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-45 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses. Battery acid can cause serious burns.
  • 🔥 Keep sparks, cigarettes, and open flames away from the battery.
  • 🔑 Switch the ignition off and keep the key fob away from your Murano.
  • ⚡ Disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last to reduce short-circuit risk.
  • 🔧 Never allow a tool to touch both battery terminals or a positive terminal and metal bodywork.
  • 🧍 The battery is heavy. Lift it upright with both hands or use a battery carrier.
  • 🚫 Do not remove or damage the battery current sensor attached to the negative cable.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 10mm combination wrench
  • 1/4-inch-drive ratchet
  • 1/4-inch-drive 6-inch extension
  • 1-10 Nm inch-pound torque wrench
  • Battery terminal cleaning brush
  • Group 35 battery carrier strap
  • Plastic trim brush
  • Safety glasses
  • Acid-resistant work gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12-volt BCI Group 35 battery with OEM-equivalent or higher CCA rating - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal protectant spray - Qty: 1
  • Battery corrosion cleaning wipes - Qty: 1 pack

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Murano on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and open the hood.
  • ⏱️ Switch off all electrical accessories. Turn the ignition off and wait at least three minutes before disconnecting the battery.
  • 🔑 Move the Intelligent Key at least 2 metres away so the vehicle does not wake up while you work.
  • 🪟 Lower the driver’s window before disconnecting power so you cannot accidentally lock yourself out.
  • 💾 Save radio presets and other personal settings if desired. Battery registration or coding is not required after replacement.
  • 🔍 Match the replacement battery’s Group 35 case size, terminal orientation, and cold-cranking amp rating to the original label. Do not install a lower-rated battery.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate and inspect the battery

  • Open the hood and locate the battery near the driver’s-side front corner of the engine compartment.
  • Use a plastic trim brush to clear loose dirt from around the battery tray and terminals.
  • Check for a swollen or leaking case. If acid is present, avoid skin contact and have the battery handled professionally.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative terminal

  • Identify the negative terminal by the minus symbol and black cable.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative terminal nut. Do not remove the battery current sensor from the cable.
  • Lift the connector straight off the battery post and position it where it cannot spring back into contact.
  • Tip: Negative comes off first.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive terminal

  • Lift the red protective cover from the positive terminal.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the positive terminal nut.
  • Lift the connector straight off and keep it away from surrounding metal.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • The hold-down is the metal bar that prevents the battery from moving.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet to loosen both hold-down nuts evenly.
  • Unhook the two retaining rods and remove the hold-down bar. Note its installed direction.
  • Keep the rods upright so they do not fall into the engine compartment.

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Attach the Group 35 battery carrier strap securely around the battery.
  • Lift the battery straight upward with both hands. Keep it upright because liquid electrolyte may spill if tilted.
  • Place it on a stable, acid-resistant surface. Do not place tools or metal objects on top.

Step 6: Clean and inspect the tray

  • Use battery corrosion cleaning wipes and a plastic trim brush to clean the tray and hold-down hardware.
  • Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside surfaces of both cable terminals.
  • Inspect the tray, cables, current sensor, and hold-down rods for cracks, corrosion, or looseness.

Step 7: Install the replacement battery

  • Use the Group 35 battery carrier strap to lower the new battery fully into the tray.
  • Orient it exactly like the original, with the positive and negative posts beside their matching cables.
  • Confirm the case sits flat and cannot rock on the tray.

Step 8: Reinstall the battery hold-down

  • Position the hold-down bar and engage both retaining rods.
  • Use a 10mm socket, extension, and torque wrench to tighten the nuts evenly.
  • Torque to 3.9 Nm (35 in-lbs). Do not overtighten or distort the battery case.
  • Push the battery gently by hand. It must not slide or lift.

Step 9: Connect the positive terminal

  • Push the positive cable terminal fully down onto the positive battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the terminal nut to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
  • Close the red protective cover over the positive terminal.

Step 10: Connect the negative terminal

  • Push the negative cable terminal fully down onto the negative battery post without twisting the current sensor.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the terminal nut to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
  • A small single spark may occur as vehicle modules receive power. Stop if sparking is continuous or severe.
  • Tip: Negative always reconnects last.

Step 11: Protect and inspect the connections

  • Use battery terminal protectant spray to apply a light coating to the assembled terminal exteriors.
  • Confirm both terminals are fully seated and cannot rotate by hand.
  • Remove all tools from the engine compartment before closing the hood.

✅ After Repair

  • 🚗 Start the engine and confirm it cranks normally. The charging warning light should turn off after starting.
  • ⚠️ If the engine does not start, switch the ignition off and recheck terminal seating and polarity.
  • 🪟 Reset each automatic window if needed: close the window fully, then hold the switch in the upward position for approximately three seconds.
  • 🕐 Reset the clock and restore saved radio or convenience settings as needed.
  • 🔄 The idle or CVT response may feel slightly different while learned settings are restored through normal driving.
  • 🔍 Check that no warning lights remain illuminated. No battery registration or scan-tool coding is normally required.
  • ♻️ Return the old lead-acid battery to a battery retailer or authorized recycler. Never place it in household waste.
