🔧 Optima - 12-Volt Battery Replacement

Replacing the battery involves disconnecting the terminals, removing the lower hold-down clamp, and installing a correctly sized replacement. Your Optima does not normally require battery registration or scan-tool coding after replacement.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-45 minutes

Assumption: These instructions apply to the original battery tray and factory terminal connections.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Switch off the engine and remove the key before touching the battery.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses because battery acid can cause burns.
  • 🔥 Keep sparks, cigarettes, and open flames away from the battery.
  • ➖ Disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last.
  • 🔧 Never allow a metal tool to touch the positive terminal and vehicle body simultaneously.
  • 🏋️ The battery is heavy. Lift it upright with both hands and do not tip it.
  • 🚫 Do not disconnect the battery while the engine is running.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 3/8-inch-drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch-drive 10-inch extension
  • 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench rated 5-30 Nm
  • Battery terminal cleaning brush
  • Battery lifting strap rated 25 kg minimum
  • ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses
  • Acid-resistant work gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12-volt H6 battery with positive terminal on the right - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal protector spray - Qty: 1

Match or exceed the cold-cranking-amp rating printed on the original battery. The replacement must have the same case dimensions, terminal layout, and lower mounting ledge.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Optima on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off all electrical accessories.
  • 🗝️ Remove the key from the vehicle and keep the smart key several feet away.
  • ⏱️ Open the hood and wait at least three minutes so the vehicle’s electronic modules can shut down.
  • 🪟 Lower the driver’s window before disconnecting power so you cannot accidentally lock yourself out.
  • 💾 Save radio presets if desired. The clock, radio presets, and automatic window settings may need resetting.
  • 🔍 Verify that the replacement battery’s positive and negative posts are in the same positions as the original.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate and Inspect the Battery

  • Put on the ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses and acid-resistant work gloves.
  • Open the hood. The battery is in the engine compartment near the driver-side front corner.
  • Check for a swollen case, leaking liquid, or heavy corrosion. Do not handle a leaking or frozen battery; have it professionally removed.

Step 2: Disconnect the Negative Terminal

  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp marked “−”.
  • Twist the clamp gently and lift it straight off the battery post. Do not pull on its cable or damage the battery sensor attached to the negative cable.
  • Position the cable away from the battery so it cannot spring back onto the post.
  • Negative always comes off first.

Step 3: Disconnect the Positive Terminal

  • Lift the red positive-terminal cover.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the positive clamp marked “+”.
  • Lift the clamp straight off and move it aside without letting it touch body metal.

Step 4: Remove the Battery Hold-Down

  • Locate the lower retaining clamp at the base of the battery. This clamp prevents the battery from moving.
  • Use the 12mm socket, 10-inch extension, and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the clamp bolt.
  • Lift out the bolt and retaining clamp. Keep both pieces together.

Step 5: Remove the Old Battery

  • Fit the battery lifting strap rated 25 kg minimum securely around the battery.
  • Lift the battery vertically out of the tray. Keep it upright to prevent acid leakage.
  • Inspect the tray for corrosion, loose hardware, or damage.

Step 6: Clean the Terminal Clamps

  • Use the battery terminal cleaning brush to clean the inside surfaces of both cable clamps.
  • Do not aggressively brush the battery sensor or electrical wiring on the negative cable.
  • Wipe away loose residue while wearing the acid-resistant work gloves.

Step 7: Install the Replacement Battery

  • Use the battery lifting strap rated 25 kg minimum to lower the new battery squarely into the tray.
  • Place it in the same direction as the original, with the positive post aligned with the positive cable.
  • Make sure the battery rests flat and its lower mounting ledge fits under the fixed side of the tray.

Step 8: Reinstall the Hold-Down Clamp

  • Position the lower retaining clamp over the battery’s mounting ledge.
  • Start the bolt by hand to avoid damaged threads.
  • Use the 12mm socket, 10-inch extension, and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the bolt to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
  • Confirm the battery cannot slide or rock. Do not overtighten against the plastic case.

Step 9: Connect the Positive Terminal

  • Push the positive clamp fully down onto the positive post.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the terminal nut to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Close the red positive-terminal cover.

Step 10: Connect the Negative Terminal

  • Push the negative clamp fully down onto the negative post.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the terminal nut to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Check that both clamps are secure by gently trying to rotate them by hand.

Step 11: Protect the Connections

  • Apply a light coat of battery terminal protector spray to the outside of both connected terminal clamps.
  • Keep the spray away from belts, pulleys, and painted surfaces.

✅ After Repair

  • 🚗 Start the engine and confirm it cranks normally. A few warning lights may appear briefly and should clear after startup or a short drive.
  • 🪟 Reset each automatic window if needed: close the window completely, then hold the switch in the upward position for approximately one second.
  • 🕐 Reset the clock and restore saved radio presets if they were erased.
  • 🔄 Turn the steering wheel slowly from center toward each side, then drive carefully for several minutes if steering or stability-control warning lights remain on.
  • 🔍 With the engine off, recheck that the battery is firmly retained and neither terminal clamp rotates.
  • ♻️ Return the old lead-acid battery to a battery retailer or authorized recycler. Never place it in household waste.
