🔧 Elantra - 12-Volt Battery Replacement

Replacing the battery involves disconnecting the old battery, removing its lower retaining clamp, and installing a correctly sized replacement. Your Elantra does not require battery registration or programming after this repair.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off, remove the key, and keep it away from the vehicle.
  • 🛡️ Wear gloves and safety glasses because batteries contain corrosive acid.
  • 🔌 Disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last.
  • 🚫 Never allow a tool to touch the positive terminal and metal bodywork simultaneously.
  • 🔥 Keep sparks, cigarettes, and open flames away from the battery.
  • 💪 The battery is heavy; lift it vertically with both hands.
  • 🧠 Disconnecting the battery may erase the clock, radio presets, and learned idle settings.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 150mm socket extension
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive torque wrench (5-25 Nm range)
  • Battery terminal cleaning brush
  • Plastic trim brush
  • Chemical-resistant nitrile gloves
  • ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12-volt H5 battery (BCI Group 47) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal protector - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Elantra on level ground, select first gear, apply the parking brake, and switch everything off.
  • ⏳ Wait at least three minutes after switching off the ignition before disconnecting the battery.
  • 🔋 Verify that the replacement is an H5/Group 47 battery with the positive and negative posts in the same locations as the original.
  • 📝 Save any radio presets you want to restore afterward.
  • 🚪 Lower the driver’s window and leave the hood open before disconnecting power.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Battery

  • Pull the hood-release handle beneath the driver’s side of the dashboard.
  • Release the secondary latch under the front edge of the hood and raise the hood fully.
  • Locate the battery on the driver’s side of the engine compartment.

Step 2: Disconnect the Negative Terminal

  • Identify the terminal marked “−” or connected to the black cable.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Twist the clamp gently and lift it straight off the battery post.
  • Position the cable where it cannot spring back onto the post.
  • Negative comes off first for safety.

Step 3: Disconnect the Positive Terminal

  • Lift the red protective cover from the terminal marked “+”.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the clamp straight off and keep it from contacting surrounding metal.

Step 4: Remove the Battery Retaining Clamp

  • Locate the small retaining clamp at the bottom front edge of the battery.
  • Use the 12mm socket, 150mm socket extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove its bolt.
  • Lift out the bolt and clamp, then place them somewhere safe.
  • The retaining clamp is the metal bracket that prevents the battery from moving.

Step 5: Remove the Old Battery

  • Remove any insulating battery cover fitted around the battery.
  • Grip the battery handle or opposite lower edges with both gloved hands.
  • Lift the battery straight upward without tipping it.
  • Set it upright on a stable surface away from children and pets.

Step 6: Clean and Inspect the Battery Area

  • Use the plastic trim brush to remove loose debris from the battery tray.
  • Use the battery terminal cleaning brush to clean corrosion from the inside of both cable clamps.
  • Inspect the tray, cables, and clamps for cracks, acid damage, or loose connections.
  • Replace damaged cables or clamps before installing the battery.

Step 7: Install the New Battery

  • Place the new H5/Group 47 battery into the tray with its terminals oriented exactly like the original.
  • Ensure the battery sits flat against the tray stops.
  • Reinstall the insulating cover if equipped.
  • Install the lower retaining clamp and bolt using the 12mm socket and 150mm socket extension.
  • Use the 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the retaining bolt to Torque to 9-14 Nm (7-10 ft-lbs).
  • Confirm the battery cannot slide or rock.

Step 8: Connect the Positive Terminal

  • Push the positive cable clamp fully down onto the positive battery post.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the terminal nut to Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
  • Close the red protective cover over the positive terminal.
  • Do not overtighten the nut; excessive force can damage the battery post.

Step 9: Connect the Negative Terminal

  • Push the negative cable clamp fully down onto the negative battery post.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the terminal nut to Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
  • Apply a light coating of battery terminal protector to both completed connections.
  • Check that neither terminal clamp can rotate by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and confirm it cranks normally and the charging warning light turns off.
  • ⚙️ Let the engine idle with all accessories switched off for approximately five minutes so the engine controls can relearn idle operation.
  • 🕒 Reset the clock and restore radio presets.
  • 🪟 If one-touch window operation is lost, close the window fully and hold the switch upward for several seconds.
  • 🔍 Check that the battery remains secure and that no warning lights remain illuminated.
  • ♻️ Return the old battery to a battery retailer or authorized recycler; never place it in household waste.
