🔧 Pathfinder - Battery Replacement

Your Pathfinder uses a conventional 12-volt battery located under the hood. Replacement involves disconnecting the negative terminal first, removing the battery bracket, and installing a correctly sized Group 35 battery.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Wear safety glasses and chemical-resistant gloves. A battery contains corrosive acid and can release flammable gas.
  • Turn the ignition completely off and keep the key fob away from your Pathfinder.
  • Always disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last.
  • Never allow a metal tool to touch both battery terminals or the positive terminal and vehicle body simultaneously.
  • Keep sparks, cigarettes, and open flames away from the battery.
  • The battery weighs approximately 16-20 kg. Lift it vertically with both hands or use a battery carrier strap.
  • Do not disconnect yellow airbag connectors or wiring near the engine compartment.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Pathfinder on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and open the hood.
  • Switch off the headlights, climate control, audio system, and all other electrical accessories.
  • Lower an open power window before disconnecting the battery so you cannot become locked out.
  • Remove the key fob from the vehicle and wait at least five minutes for the control modules to shut down.
  • Record saved radio stations and personal settings. Battery replacement may reset the clock, automatic window function, and trip information.
  • Battery registration or programming is not required on this Pathfinder.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate and inspect the battery

  • Find the battery at the front-left area of the engine compartment, viewed from the driver’s seat.
  • If an intake duct restricts access, use a plastic trim tool to release its retaining clips and lift the duct away.
  • Use safety glasses and chemical-resistant gloves while checking for leakage, swelling, or severe corrosion.
  • Do not proceed if the battery is cracked, frozen, or actively leaking. Have it removed professionally.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative terminal

  • Identify the negative terminal by its black cable and minus symbol.
  • Use a 10mm combination wrench to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Twist the clamp gently and lift it straight off the battery post. Do not pry against the battery case.
  • Position the cable away from the battery so it cannot spring back onto the post.
  • Negative comes off first and goes on last.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive terminal

  • Open the red positive-terminal cover by hand.
  • Use a 10mm combination wrench to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the positive clamp straight off the post and move it aside without pulling on its fusible-link wiring.
  • Do not remove the individual electrical connections from the positive-terminal fuse assembly.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down bracket

  • Use a 10mm deep socket, 150mm extension, and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to loosen the two hold-down nuts.
  • Unhook the J-shaped retaining rods and remove the upper hold-down bracket. A J-hook is the long rod securing the battery to its tray.
  • Keep the bracket, rods, and nuts together for reinstallation.

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Attach the Group 35 battery carrier strap securely to the battery.
  • Use the carrier strap to lift the battery vertically from its tray. Keep it upright to prevent acid leakage.
  • Set the battery on a stable, acid-resistant surface away from children and ignition sources.

Step 6: Clean and inspect the tray

  • Use battery terminal cleaner and a battery terminal cleaning brush to remove corrosion from the cable clamps.
  • Use chemical-resistant gloves while wiping the battery tray clean.
  • Inspect the tray, cables, hold-down rods, and positive fuse assembly for damage. Replace damaged hardware before continuing.

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Verify that the new battery is a Group 35 unit with the positive and negative posts in the same positions as the original.
  • Use the Group 35 battery carrier strap to lower the battery squarely into the tray with the terminals correctly oriented.
  • Make sure the battery sits flat and cannot rock on the tray.

Step 8: Reinstall the hold-down bracket

  • Position the upper bracket across the battery and engage both J-shaped retaining rods.
  • Use a 10mm deep socket, 150mm extension, and 2-20 Nm torque wrench to tighten the hold-down nuts evenly.
  • Torque the battery hold-down nuts to 3.9 Nm (35 in-lbs).
  • Confirm that the battery cannot slide, but do not overtighten the bracket or deform the battery case.

Step 9: Connect the positive terminal

  • Push the positive cable clamp fully down onto the positive battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 2-20 Nm torque wrench to tighten the clamp nut.
  • Torque the positive terminal nut to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
  • Apply a light coating of battery terminal protectant, then close the red terminal cover.

Step 10: Connect the negative terminal

  • Push the negative cable clamp fully down onto the negative battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 2-20 Nm torque wrench to tighten the clamp nut.
  • Torque the negative terminal nut to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
  • Apply a light coating of battery terminal protectant after tightening.

Step 11: Reinstall the intake duct

  • If removed, position the intake duct in its original location by hand.
  • Use a plastic trim tool to reinstall its retaining clips without forcing them.
  • Use chemical-resistant gloves to check that no tools or loose hardware remain in the engine compartment.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm that it cranks normally. The charging-system warning light should turn off after the engine starts.
  • Check that both terminal clamps remain stationary when gently moved by hand.
  • Set the clock and restore saved audio and convenience settings as needed.
  • To restore the automatic front-window function, close the window fully and continue holding the switch upward for approximately three seconds. Repeat for the other front window if needed.
  • Turn the steering wheel slowly from center toward each side, then return it to center if warning indicators appeared after reconnecting the battery. Drive carefully for a short distance; initialization warnings should clear.
  • If the battery or charging warning remains illuminated, stop the engine and have the charging system tested.
  • Return the old battery to the parts seller or an authorized recycling center. Do not place it in household waste.
