- 📦 Compare the replacement alternator with the original before installation. The connector, pulley, mounting ears, and electrical terminal must match.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Open the hood and locate the battery on the left side of the engine compartment.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and position it where it cannot spring back.
- Wait at least one minute before touching the alternator wiring.
Step 2: Raise the right-front corner
- Use a 17mm socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar to loosen the right-front wheel nuts about one turn.
- Raise the right-front lifting point with a 2-ton floor jack.
- Place a 2-ton jack stand beneath the reinforced support point and lower the vehicle securely onto it.
- Remove the wheel nuts and wheel using the 17mm socket.
Step 3: Remove the engine splash shield
- Use a trim-clip removal tool to release the plastic retainers from the right-side engine splash shield.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch-drive ratchet, and 3-inch extension to remove its bolts.
- Move the shield aside to expose the crankshaft pulley, belt, and automatic tensioner.
- Keep clips arranged in removal order.
Step 4: Release the serpentine belt
- Confirm the belt-routing photograph is clear before proceeding.
- Place a 17mm socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar on the automatic belt tensioner. The tensioner is the spring-loaded pulley that keeps the belt tight.
- Rotate the tensioner clockwise slowly to remove belt tension.
- Slide the belt off the alternator pulley, then release the tensioner slowly. Do not let it snap back.
- Remove the belt only if it is being replaced; otherwise, leave it routed around the lower pulleys.
Step 5: Disconnect the alternator wiring
- From above, press the locking tab and unplug the small alternator electrical connector by holding its plastic body.
- Open the protective cap over the large output terminal.
- Use a 12mm socket, 3/8-inch-drive ratchet, and 3-inch extension to remove the output-terminal nut.
- Lift off the cable and insulate its terminal so it cannot touch metal.
- Do not twist the alternator’s threaded output stud.
Step 6: Remove the alternator
- Support the alternator with one hand before removing its final fastener.
- Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch-drive ratchet, and the required 3-inch or 6-inch extension to remove the upper mounting bolt.
- Use the 14mm socket and 14mm combination wrench to remove the lower mounting bolt and nut, if equipped.
- Work the alternator gently out of its bracket and remove it through the right-side access opening.
- Do not pry against the aluminum engine cover or coolant hoses.
Step 7: Install the replacement alternator
- Place the replacement alternator squarely into its mounting bracket.
- Start the lower and upper mounting bolts by hand for several turns. This prevents cross-threading.
- Use a 14mm socket, 14mm combination wrench, and torque wrench rated 5-80 ft-lbs to tighten the alternator mounting fasteners to 39.2-53.9 Nm (29-40 ft-lbs).
- Make sure the alternator sits fully against its bracket without trapped wiring.
Step 8: Reconnect the alternator wiring
- Place the large output cable squarely over the alternator stud.
- Use a 12mm socket and torque wrench rated 5-80 ft-lbs to tighten the terminal nut to 9.8-14.7 Nm (87-130 in-lbs).
- Close the protective cap completely.
- Push the small electrical connector into place until its lock clicks.
- Do not overtighten the output nut; the insulated terminal can break.
Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Route the belt according to the photograph, leaving the alternator pulley until last.
- Use the 17mm socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner clockwise.
- Slide the belt fully onto the alternator pulley, then release the tensioner slowly.
- Inspect every pulley. Each belt rib must sit inside a matching pulley groove.
- Misaligned ribs can destroy a new belt.
Step 10: Reinstall the shield and wheel
- Position the splash shield and install its retainers with the trim-clip removal tool.
- Install its bolts using the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet. Tighten them gently until snug.
- Install the wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
- Raise your Forte slightly using the 2-ton floor jack, remove the jack stand, and lower the vehicle.
- Use the 17mm socket and torque wrench rated 5-80 ft-lbs to tighten the wheel nuts in a crossing pattern to 88-107 Nm (65-79 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Reconnect the battery
- Place the negative cable fully onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch-drive ratchet, and torque wrench rated 5-80 ft-lbs to tighten the clamp to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
- Confirm the clamp cannot rotate by hand. Do not overtighten it.
✅ After Repair
- 👀 Before starting, inspect the belt again and confirm no tools remain in the engine compartment.
- 🔊 Start the engine and listen for squealing, scraping, or knocking. Switch it off immediately if the belt moves sideways.
- 💡 Confirm the red battery warning light turns off after the engine starts.
- ⚡ Set a digital multimeter rated 20 volts DC to DC voltage. With the engine idling, touch red to the positive battery post and black to the negative post.
- 📈 Charging voltage will normally be approximately 13.5-14.8 volts, although computer-controlled charging can temporarily vary with battery condition and electrical load.
