🔧 Traverse - Alternator Replacement

This is an intermediate repair because access is tight and the serpentine belt is spring-loaded. You’ll disconnect the battery, open access around the passenger side of the engine, remove the belt and wiring, then exchange the alternator.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

Important: The current parts list didn’t return a vehicle-matched alternator. Don’t substitute one of the universal alternator bolt kits shown there.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the alternator power terminal.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool completely before reaching around the radiator and exhaust components.
  • ⚠️ Support your Traverse with jack stands. Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ The belt tensioner is spring-loaded. Move it slowly and keep your fingers away from pulleys.
  • ⚠️ Never allow the disconnected alternator power cable to touch metal.
  • ⚠️ Don’t start the engine until the belt is correctly seated on every pulley.

  • 📋 Park on level pavement, shift into Park, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • 📋 Switch off the ignition and remove the key from the vehicle.
  • 📋 Allow several minutes for the vehicle’s electronic modules to shut down.
  • 📋 Photograph the belt routing before removing the belt.
  • 📋 Compare the new and old alternators before installation. The pulley, electrical plug, mounting ears, and output stud must match.
  • 📋 No infotainment service mode or alternator programming is normally required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Open the battery access area and use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative terminal clamp.
  • Remove the negative cable and isolate it so it cannot spring back onto the terminal.
  • Leave the positive battery terminal connected.
  • Negative off first, negative on last.

Step 2: Open the alternator access area

  • Remove the engine appearance cover by pulling upward evenly with both hands.
  • Use an 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to loosen any intake duct clamps blocking access.
  • If lower access is required, loosen the passenger-front wheel fasteners with an 18mm socket before raising the vehicle.
  • Raise the front with the 3-ton floor jack and support it securely on 3-ton jack stands.
  • Remove the passenger-front wheel with the 18mm socket.
  • Use the trim clip removal tool and appropriate socket to remove the necessary splash-shield or wheel-liner fasteners.

Step 3: Inspect and record the belt routing

  • Use the work light to identify the alternator, tensioner, and each pulley.
  • Photograph the complete serpentine-belt path.
  • Inspect the belt for cracks, missing ribs, shiny glazing, frayed edges, or fluid contamination.
  • Replace a damaged belt rather than reinstalling it. Belts have an uncanny talent for failing right after everything is back together.

Step 4: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Fit the serpentine belt tool or 1/2-inch breaker bar onto the tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner only in the direction that releases belt tension.
  • Slip the belt off the alternator pulley while holding the tensioner securely.
  • Slowly return the tensioner to its stop. Never let it snap back.
  • Remove the belt completely if it’s being replaced. Otherwise, secure it so it remains routed around the lower pulleys.

Step 5: Disconnect the alternator wiring

  • Use the work light to locate the small control connector and large output cable.
  • Release the locking tab carefully with the flat-blade screwdriver, then unplug the control connector by its plastic housing.
  • Move the rubber protective boot off the output terminal.
  • Use the 13mm socket to remove the output-cable nut.
  • Lift off the cable terminal and wrap it with a clean insulating material.
  • Don’t twist the alternator output stud while loosening or tightening the nut.

Step 6: Move the idler pulley if required

  • Use the appropriate socket, commonly the 15mm socket, to loosen the idler-pulley fastener beside the alternator.
  • Slide or position the pulley outward as required for alternator clearance.
  • Keep every spacer and washer in its original order.
  • Photograph the spacer arrangement before removal.

Step 7: Remove the alternator fasteners

  • Support the alternator with one hand.
  • Use the 15mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and extensions to remove its mounting bolts or nuts.
  • If the mounting studs must come out, use the E8 external Torx socket. An external Torx socket grips the star-shaped outside of the stud.
  • Keep track of fastener length and location.
  • Work the alternator free without levering against coolant, air-conditioning, or wiring components.

Step 8: Remove the alternator

  • Rotate the alternator carefully through the available opening.
  • Move hoses and wiring aside by hand only. Don’t kink an air-conditioning line.
  • If clearance remains insufficient, remove additional intake or liner pieces with the tools already listed rather than forcing the alternator through.

Step 9: Compare the replacement alternator

  • Place both alternators side by side.
  • Confirm the pulley diameter, pulley grooves, mounting ears, connector shape, output-stud location, and rear housing clearance match.
  • Spin the new pulley by hand. It should turn smoothly without scraping or excessive play.
  • Transfer only brackets or retainers specifically designed to move from the original unit.

Step 10: Install the replacement alternator

  • Position the replacement alternator in its bracket.
  • Start every mounting fastener by hand for several turns to prevent cross-threading.
  • If a mounting stud was removed, install it with the E8 external Torx socket and tighten to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Use the 15mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the alternator mounting fasteners to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
  • If the fastener arrangement differs from the original, stop and use the torque specification supplied with the matched alternator or current GM service information.

Step 11: Reinstall the idler pulley

  • Reinstall the idler pulley and every original spacer in the photographed order.
  • Use the 15mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the applicable idler-pulley fastener to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
  • Spin the pulley by hand and confirm it doesn’t contact the alternator housing.

Step 12: Reconnect the alternator wiring

  • Install the output-cable terminal squarely over the alternator stud.
  • Use the 13mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the output-terminal nut to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten it. A damaged output stud can ruin a brand-new alternator.
  • Cover the connection completely with its protective boot.
  • Push the control connector into place until its lock clicks.

Step 13: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt according to your photograph and the under-hood routing diagram.
  • Make sure the ribbed side runs only on grooved pulleys and the smooth side runs on smooth pulleys.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner slowly.
  • Slip the belt over the final pulley, then release the tensioner gradually.
  • Use the work light to confirm every belt rib is seated correctly.

Step 14: Reassemble the access area

  • Reinstall the splash shield or wheel liner with the trim clip removal tool and original fasteners.
  • Install the passenger-front wheel with the 18mm socket.
  • Lower your Traverse safely and tighten the wheel fasteners evenly to the specification shown in the owner information or current GM service data.
  • Reinstall the intake duct with the 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Push the engine cover evenly onto its mounting points.

Step 15: Reconnect the battery

  • Inspect the engine bay for loose tools and disconnected wiring.
  • Use the 10mm socket to reconnect and secure the negative battery terminal.
  • The terminal must be secure without crushing or distorting the clamp.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine while standing clear of the belt.
  • ✅ Watch the belt for several seconds. Shut the engine off immediately if the belt walks sideways, flaps, or makes grinding noises.
  • ✅ Confirm the battery or charging-system warning remains off.
  • ✅ Use the digital multimeter across the battery terminals to check charging operation.
  • ✅ Because the Traverse uses computer-controlled charging, voltage can vary with battery condition and electrical demand. Don’t condemn the alternator from one changing voltage reading alone.
  • ✅ Switch on the headlights and blower motor, then verify the vehicle continues charging without warnings.
  • ✅ Recheck the alternator output boot and nearby wiring after the engine is switched off.
  • ✅ No alternator coding or battery registration is normally required after this replacement.
