🔧 Ridgeline - Alternator Replacement

The alternator sits at the front passenger side of your Ridgeline’s V6 engine. Replacement requires disconnecting the battery, removing the drive belt, disconnecting the alternator wiring, and removing its mounting bolts.

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the alternator wiring. The large output cable is always connected to battery power.
  • 🧊 Let the engine cool completely before working near the radiator and exhaust components.
  • 🔑 Keep the ignition switched off and the key away from the vehicle.
  • 👓 Wear safety glasses and gloves. The belt tensioner is spring-loaded and can move suddenly.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Ridgeline on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and open the hood.
  • 🧠 Allow approximately three minutes after switching off the ignition before disconnecting the battery. This lets the vehicle’s control modules shut down.
  • 📷 Photograph the belt routing before removal. A serpentine belt is the single long belt that drives several engine accessories.
  • 🔋 Disconnecting the battery may reset the clock, radio presets, automatic window function, and some learned engine settings.
  • 🔍 Confirm the replacement alternator has the same electrical connector, pulley grooves, and mounting points as the removed unit.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative clamp from the battery post and position it where it cannot spring back into contact.
  • Do not disconnect the positive terminal unless access requires battery removal.

Step 2: Remove the Upper Access Covers

  • Use a plastic trim-clip removal tool to release the clips holding the front upper cover over the radiator area.
  • Remove any intake-air duct fasteners with a 10mm socket, then lift the duct out for working room.
  • Place the clips and fasteners in a container so they are not lost.

Step 3: Record the Belt Routing

  • Use an inspection light to locate the belt-routing label and automatic tensioner.
  • If the label is missing or unreadable, take a clear photograph showing the belt around every pulley.
  • Inspect the belt for cracks, missing ribs, shiny glazing, frayed edges, or oil contamination. Replace it if any of these are present.

Step 4: Release the Drive-Belt Tension

  • Fit a 19mm socket with a breaker bar or a serpentine-belt removal tool onto the tensioner’s cast operating point.
  • Slowly rotate the automatic tensioner against its spring until the belt becomes loose. The automatic tensioner is the spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight.
  • Slide the belt off the alternator pulley while holding the tensioner.
  • Slowly return the tensioner to its resting position. Do not let it snap back.
  • Leave the belt around the other pulleys if it will be reused.

Step 5: Disconnect the Alternator Wiring

  • Use a small flat-blade screwdriver only as needed to release the locking tab on the alternator’s small electrical connector. Pull on the connector housing, not the wires.
  • Lift the protective rubber cap from the large output terminal.
  • Use a 12mm socket and ratchet to remove the output-terminal nut, then lift off the cable eyelet.
  • Move the wiring aside without sharply bending or stretching it.

Step 6: Remove the Alternator Mounting Bolts

  • Support the alternator with one hand before removing the final fastener.
  • Use a 14mm socket, extension, and ratchet to remove the upper and lower alternator mounting bolts.
  • Keep track of each bolt’s original location because their lengths may differ.
  • Rock the alternator gently to release it from the mounting bracket. Do not pry against refrigerant lines or wiring.
  • Guide the alternator upward through the available opening. Rotate it as necessary rather than forcing it past hoses or harnesses.

Step 7: Compare the Alternators

  • Place the old and new alternators side by side.
  • Confirm that the pulley diameter, rib count, mounting ears, electrical connector, and output terminal are identical.
  • Turn the new pulley by hand. It should rotate smoothly without grinding or excessive looseness.

Step 8: Install the New Alternator

  • Lower the replacement alternator into position without striking the pulley or electrical terminal.
  • Align the mounting ears and start every mounting bolt by hand. Turn each bolt several full rotations to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket to draw the alternator evenly into its bracket.
  • Use a torque wrench and 14mm socket to tighten the alternator mounting bolts to 44 N·m (33 ft-lbs).
  • Start all bolts before tightening either one.

Step 9: Reconnect the Alternator Wiring

  • Place the large output-cable eyelet squarely over the alternator terminal.
  • Install the terminal nut with a 12mm socket and torque wrench. Torque to 9.8 N·m (87 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten the nut because the insulated terminal can break inside the alternator.
  • Refit the rubber protective cap completely over the output terminal.
  • Push the small electrical connector into place until its locking tab clicks.

Step 10: Reinstall the Drive Belt

  • Route the belt according to the under-hood diagram or your photograph. Make sure the ribbed side runs in grooved pulleys and the smooth side runs against smooth pulleys.
  • Use the 19mm socket with a breaker bar or the serpentine-belt removal tool to rotate the tensioner slowly.
  • Slip the belt over the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Use an inspection light to check every pulley. Every belt rib must sit inside a matching pulley groove.
  • Do not start the engine if the belt is hanging over a pulley edge.

Step 11: Reinstall the Covers and Intake Duct

  • Position the intake-air duct and install its fasteners using a 10mm socket.
  • Reinstall the upper radiator-area cover.
  • Press the trim clips into place by hand after resetting their center pins with the plastic trim-clip removal tool.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

  • Check that no tools remain near the belt, pulleys, or battery.
  • Place the negative battery clamp fully onto the negative post.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the clamp until it cannot rotate by hand. Do not crush or distort the clamp.

✅ After Repair

  • 👀 Watch the belt from a safe distance while an assistant starts the engine. Stop the engine immediately if the belt wanders, squeals continuously, or runs off-center.
  • 🔌 Confirm the battery warning light turns off after the engine starts.
  • ⚡ If available, check charging voltage at the battery. Honda’s variable charging system can change voltage with operating conditions, so a single low reading does not automatically indicate failure.
  • 🛑 Switch off the engine and recheck the belt’s position on every pulley.
  • 🪟 Restore automatic window operation if needed: fully lower the driver’s window, then fully raise it and hold the switch for approximately two seconds.
  • 🚗 Take a short test drive and confirm there are no warning lights, abnormal noises, or burning smells.
  • 🔍 If the battery warning remains on, inspect the alternator connector, output cable, battery condition, and charging-system fuse before driving farther.
