- 📱 Photograph the serpentine-belt routing before removal. A serpentine belt is the single long belt that drives the alternator and other accessories.
- 🪟 Lower the driver’s window before disconnecting the battery so you cannot accidentally lock yourself out.
- 🔌 Switch off the lamps, climate control, audio system, and ignition. Wait at least three minutes before disconnecting the battery.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
- Lift the clamp straight off the negative post without pulling on the current sensor or its wiring.
- Position the cable where it cannot spring back onto the battery post.
- Cover the post with a clean glove.
Step 2: Create Working Space
- Use the trim-clip removal tool to release any retainers securing the upper intake-air duct that obstructs alternator access.
- Use a 10mm socket where bolts secure the duct, then lift the duct out carefully.
- If the coolant overflow reservoir blocks access, use a 10mm socket to remove its fasteners and move the reservoir aside without disconnecting its hose.
- Do not open the cooling system or kink the reservoir hose.
Step 3: Inspect and Record the Belt Routing
- Use the serpentine-belt routing diagram or phone camera to record exactly how the belt passes around each pulley.
- Inspect the belt for missing ribs, edge damage, cracks, shiny glazing, or oil contamination.
- Replace the belt if any damage is present.
Step 4: Release the Serpentine Belt
- The belt tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley that keeps the belt tight automatically.
- Fit the 17mm long-handle serpentine-belt wrench and 17mm socket onto the tensioner hex.
- Rotate the tensioner clockwise slowly to remove belt tension.
- While holding the tensioner, slide the belt off the alternator pulley with your gloved hand.
- Slowly return the tensioner to its resting position. Do not let it snap back.
- Leave the belt routed around the remaining pulleys if it is being reused.
Step 5: Disconnect the Alternator Wiring
- Confirm that the negative battery cable is still isolated.
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver only as needed to lift the alternator control-connector lock, then unplug the connector by its housing.
- Pull back the rubber insulating cap covering the large alternator output terminal.
- Use a 12mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and extension to remove the output-terminal nut.
- Lift the cable eyelet from the terminal and position it safely aside.
- Do not twist or place side pressure on the threaded output stud.
Step 6: Remove the Alternator Mounting Bolts
- Support the alternator with one hand before removing the final bolt.
- Use a 14mm socket, extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the upper and lower alternator mounting bolts.
- Remove both bolts while noting their original locations and lengths.
- Rock the alternator gently by hand to free it from its mounting bracket.
- Do not pry against plastic housings, coolant pipes, or wiring.
Step 7: Remove and Compare the Alternator
- Guide the alternator upward through the available opening, moving the loosened reservoir or intake duct aside as necessary.
- Place the old and new alternators next to each other.
- Verify that the mounting ears, electrical connector, output terminal, pulley diameter, pulley grooves, and clocking all match.
- Turn the new pulley by hand. It should rotate smoothly without scraping or looseness.
Step 8: Install the New Alternator
- Lower the new alternator into its bracket without striking the pulley or electrical terminals.
- Align the mounting holes and install both bolts by hand for several turns to prevent cross-threading.
- Use a 14mm socket and 10-60 Nm torque wrench to tighten the alternator mounting bolts to 39.2-53.9 Nm (29-40 ft-lbs).
- Start every mounting bolt by hand.
Step 9: Reconnect the Alternator Wiring
- Place the output-cable eyelet squarely onto the alternator output stud.
- Install the terminal nut with a 12mm socket and tighten it using the 10-60 Nm torque wrench to 9.8-14.7 Nm (87-130 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the nut because the insulated terminal can crack.
- Fully cover the terminal with its rubber insulating cap.
- Push the control connector into the alternator until its lock clicks.
Step 10: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt
- Route the belt according to your photograph or routing diagram. Ensure every rib sits inside the matching pulley grooves.
- Use the 17mm long-handle serpentine-belt wrench and 17mm socket to rotate the tensioner clockwise.
- Slip the belt over the alternator pulley, then release the tensioner slowly.
- Inspect every pulley from above. The belt must be centered and must not hang over any pulley edge.
- Check the lowest pulley with a flashlight.
Step 11: Reinstall Removed Components
- Return the coolant reservoir and intake-air duct to their original positions.
- Use a 10mm socket and 10-60 Nm torque wrench to tighten M6 accessory fasteners to 8-10 Nm (71-89 in-lbs).
- Use the trim-clip removal tool by hand to reinstall the original push clips without forcing them.
- Confirm that no hose, cable, or tool is touching the belt.
Step 12: Reconnect the Battery
- Use the battery terminal cleaning brush if corrosion is present on the post or clamp.
- Place the negative clamp fully down on the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 10-60 Nm torque wrench to tighten the clamp nut to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
- Confirm the clamp cannot rotate by hand. Do not overtighten it.
✅ After Repair
- 👀 Before starting, inspect the belt once more and remove all tools from the engine compartment.
- 🔊 Start the engine and watch the belt from a safe distance. Shut the engine off immediately if the belt wanders, squeals continuously, or runs off-center.
- ⚡ Set a digital multimeter to DC volts and measure across the battery posts. A normally operating charging system will commonly show approximately 13.5-14.8 volts with the engine running, depending on battery condition and computer-controlled charging demand.
- 💡 Switch on the headlights and cabin blower. Confirm there is no battery warning lamp, burning smell, abnormal noise, or flickering.
- 🛞 Do not place hands, clothing, meter leads, or tools near the moving belt.
- 🕒 Shut the engine off after several minutes and inspect the belt alignment and alternator connections again.
- 🪟 Restore the clock, saved audio settings, and automatic window function if lost. To relearn a window, close it fully and hold the switch upward for several seconds.
- 🔍 If the battery warning lamp remains on, scan the vehicle and test the battery, charging cable, ground connections, and alternator control circuit.
