- ๐ Park your Trax on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off all electrical accessories.
- ๐ Place wheel chocks securely behind both rear wheels.
- ๐ Remove the ignition key and keep the key fob away from the vehicle.

๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Open the hood and locate the battery on the driver side of the engine compartment.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable from the battery post and position it where it cannot spring back into contact.
- Wait at least two minutes before working on the alternator wiring.
Step 2: Remove the Air-Intake Duct
- Use a 7mm nut driver to loosen the clamps securing the air-intake duct between the air-filter housing and turbocharger inlet.
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to release any retaining tab without forcing it.
- Disconnect the attached breather hose by pressing its locking tabs and pulling it straight off.
- Lift the intake duct out of the engine compartment and cover the open turbo inlet with a clean, lint-free cloth.
- Never let debris enter the turbo inlet.
Step 3: Record the Belt Routing
- Use a serpentine-belt routing diagram marker to sketch how the belt passes around each pulley.
- Inspect the belt for cracks, missing ribs, shiny glazing, frayed edges, or oil contamination.
- Replace the belt if any damage is present.
Step 4: Release and Remove the Drive Belt
- Locate the spring-loaded belt tensioner. A tensioner is the pulley assembly that automatically keeps the drive belt tight.
- Fit a 15mm shallow socket and 3/8-inch-drive breaker bar onto the tensioner fastener.
- Rotate the tensioner clockwise slowly to release belt tension. Do not remove or loosen the tensioner fastener.
- While holding the tensioner, slide the belt off the alternator pulley with your free hand.
- Slowly return the tensioner to its resting position, then remove the belt from the remaining pulleys.
- Release the tensioner slowly to prevent damage.
Step 5: Disconnect the Alternator Wiring
- Press the locking tab and unplug the small electrical connector from the alternator. Use a plastic trim removal tool only if the tab is difficult to press.
- Pull back the protective cap covering the large positive terminal.
- Use a 13mm socket, extension, and ratchet to remove the positive-terminal nut.
- Lift the cable eyelet from the terminal and position it away from metal parts.
- Inspect the terminal and cable eyelet for looseness, melted plastic, or green corrosion.
Step 6: Remove the Alternator Bolts
- Use a 15mm shallow socket, extension, and ratchet to loosen the alternator mounting bolts.
- Support the alternator with one hand while removing the final mounting bolt.
- Note the position and length of every bolt so each one returns to its original location.
- Gently rock the alternator to release it from the mounting bracket. Do not pry against the plastic rear housing.
Step 7: Remove the Alternator
- Rotate the alternator carefully and lift it through the opening created by removing the intake duct.
- If clearance is tight, use a plastic trim removal tool to release nearby wiring retainers and move the harness slightly aside.
- Do not stretch wiring, refrigerant lines, or coolant hoses.
- Compare the replacement alternator with the removed unit. Confirm the pulley, connector, mounting ears, and terminal locations match exactly.
Step 8: Install the Replacement Alternator
- Lower the replacement alternator into position and align its mounting ears with the engine bracket.
- Install every mounting bolt by hand for several turns to prevent cross-threading.
- Use a 15mm shallow socket, extension, and torque wrench to tighten the alternator mounting bolts evenly to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect the Alternator Wiring
- Place the positive cable eyelet squarely over the alternator terminal.
- Install the terminal nut by hand, then use a 13mm socket and torque wrench to tighten it to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
- Reposition the protective cap so the terminal is fully covered.
- Push the small electrical connector into the alternator until its lock clicks.
- Gently pull on the connector to verify it is locked.
Step 10: Install the Drive Belt
- Route the belt around all pulleys according to your diagram, leaving the alternator pulley for last.
- Make sure every belt rib sits inside the matching pulley grooves.
- Use the 15mm shallow socket and 3/8-inch-drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner clockwise.
- Slip the belt over the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Inspect every pulley again. The belt must be centered and must not hang over any pulley edge.
Step 11: Reinstall the Air-Intake Duct
- Remove the protective cloth from the turbo inlet and verify nothing has entered the opening.
- Position the intake duct fully over both connection points.
- Reconnect the breather hose until its fitting clicks.
- Use a 7mm nut driver to tighten the duct clamps until snug. Do not crush the plastic duct.
Step 12: Reconnect the Battery
- Use a battery terminal cleaning brush to remove corrosion from the negative battery post and clamp if necessary.
- Install the negative cable fully onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the negative-terminal clamp to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the clamp because the battery post can be damaged.
โ After Repair
- ๐ Before starting the engine, inspect the engine compartment for loose tools, disconnected hoses, and wiring near the belt.
- ๐ Start the engine and watch the belt from a safe distance. It should run smoothly and remain centered on every pulley.
