📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Escape on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧊 Let the engine cool completely before starting.
  • 🔋 Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket. Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the battery post.
  • 🧰 A serpentine belt tool is a long, thin wrench used to rotate the spring-loaded belt tensioner in tight spaces.
  • 📸 Take a photo of the belt routing before removing the belt. This helps you reinstall it correctly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Work Area

  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable if you have not already done so.
  • Use an 8mm socket or trim clip removal tool to remove the upper engine appearance cover or intake duct fasteners if they block access.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen any intake duct clamp that limits access near the alternator.
  • Take photos before removing parts.

Step 2: Raise and Secure the Front of the Vehicle

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the front jacking point to raise the front of your Escape.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the stands and lightly shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

  • Use an 8mm socket to remove the lower splash shield screws.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove any plastic push clips.
  • Set the splash shield aside in a safe place.

Step 4: Release the Serpentine Belt Tension

  • Find the belt tensioner. The tensioner is the spring-loaded pulley that keeps the belt tight.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool or 3/8-inch drive breaker bar on the tensioner to rotate it and release belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off the alternator pulley first, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys if you are replacing it.
  • Do not let the tensioner snap back.

Step 5: Disconnect the Alternator Wiring

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently release the locking tab on the alternator electrical connector.
  • Pull the connector straight off. Do not pull on the wires.
  • Remove the protective cap from the alternator output terminal by hand or with a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the alternator output cable nut.
  • Move the cable away from the alternator.
  • During installation, tighten the alternator output cable nut to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 6: Remove the Alternator Mounting Bolts

  • Support the alternator with one hand.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive extension to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • If equipped with a bracket or brace blocking removal, use a 15mm socket to remove the bracket fasteners.
  • Lift the alternator out carefully from the engine bay.
  • It may be snug in the bracket.

Step 7: Compare the New Alternator

  • Place the old and new alternators side by side.
  • Confirm the pulley, electrical connector, mounting ears, and output stud are in the same positions.
  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean the battery terminal and cable end if corrosion is present.

Step 8: Install the New Alternator

  • Position the new alternator into the mounting bracket by hand.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first. This prevents cross-threading.
  • Use a 13mm socket to snug the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Use a torque wrench 5-80 ft-lbs to tighten the alternator mounting bolts to Torque to 48 Nm (35 ft-lbs).
  • If removed, reinstall the bracket or brace using a 15mm socket and tighten to Torque to 48 Nm (35 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reconnect the Alternator Wiring

  • Install the alternator output cable onto the output stud.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench 5-80 ft-lbs to tighten the output cable nut to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Snap the protective cap back over the output terminal.
  • Push the electrical connector into the alternator until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the connector to make sure it is locked.

Step 10: Install the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the new serpentine belt around the pulleys using your photo as a guide.
  • Leave the alternator pulley for last because it is usually easiest to reach.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool or 3/8-inch drive breaker bar to rotate the tensioner.
  • Slide the belt over the alternator pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check that the belt ribs are fully seated in every grooved pulley.
  • One rib off can shred the belt.

Step 11: Reinstall Shields and Intake Parts

  • Use an 8mm socket to reinstall the lower splash shield screws.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool by hand to seat any plastic push clips.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to tighten any intake duct clamp you loosened.
  • Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to reinstall any upper covers or duct fasteners.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

  • Apply battery terminal protectant to the clean battery terminal if available.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the terminal clamp snugly. Do not overtighten.
  • Start the engine and listen for belt squeal, grinding, or rubbing.

Step 13: Verify Charging Voltage

  • Set the digital multimeter to DC volts.
  • Touch the red probe to the positive battery terminal and the black probe to the negative battery terminal.
  • With the engine off, a healthy battery should usually read about 12.4-12.7 volts.
  • With the engine running, charging voltage should generally be about 13.5-14.8 volts.
  • If voltage stays near 12 volts while running, shut the engine off and recheck the alternator connector, output cable, belt routing, and battery connections.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Confirm the battery warning light turns off after the engine starts.
  • ✅ Let the engine idle for 3-5 minutes and watch that the belt runs smoothly.
  • ✅ Turn on headlights, blower fan, and rear defroster, then recheck charging voltage with the digital multimeter.
  • ✅ If the battery was weak or repeatedly discharged, charge and test it. A bad battery can damage a new alternator.
  • ✅ Drive gently for 10-15 minutes. The charging system and idle control may relearn after the battery disconnect.
  • ✅ Recheck the belt and wiring after the test drive with the engine off.
