🔧 F-150 - Alternator Replacement
The alternator charges the battery and supplies electricity while the engine runs. Replacing it requires disconnecting the battery, removing the intake duct and drive belt, then transferring the electrical connections to the new alternator.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the alternator wiring. The main alternator terminal is always connected directly to the battery.
- 🧊 Allow the engine to cool completely before working near the belt and cooling system.
- 🔑 Keep the ignition off and remove the key during the entire repair.
- 🛑 Never place your fingers between the belt and a pulley.
- 🔋 Do not allow a metal tool to bridge a battery terminal to ground.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Alternator for 3.7L V6 engine - Qty: 1
- Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1 if cracked, glazed, frayed, or contaminated
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your F-150 on level ground, select Park, engage the parking brake, and open the hood.
- 📱 Save any radio presets you want to keep. Disconnecting the battery may reset the clock and learned settings.
- 📷 Photograph the belt routing before removal. A routing diagram should also be located in the engine compartment.
- 🔌 Switch off all electrical accessories and wait at least two minutes before disconnecting the battery.
- 🔍 Compare the replacement alternator with the original. The mounting points, pulley, electrical connector, and output terminal must match.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Put on the safety glasses and mechanic’s gloves.
- Use an 8mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable from the battery and position it where it cannot spring back onto the terminal.
- Do not disconnect the positive cable unless access requires it.
Step 2: Remove the Air-Intake Duct
- Use an 8mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the clamps at both ends of the air-intake duct.
- Disconnect any attached breather hose by releasing its locking tab with a flat-blade screwdriver. Do not force the plastic fitting.
- Use a trim-clip removal tool for any retaining clip attached to the duct.
- Lift the duct out of the engine compartment and cover the open intake entrance with a clean, lint-free cloth.
Step 3: Record the Belt Routing
- Use the under-hood routing label or your photograph to identify how the belt passes around every pulley.
- Check the belt for cracks, missing ribs, shiny glazing, frayed edges, or oil contamination.
- Plan to install a new belt if any damage is present.
Step 4: Release and Remove the Drive Belt
- The belt tensioner is a spring-loaded arm that keeps the serpentine belt tight.
- Fit a 15mm socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar, or a serpentine-belt removal tool, onto the tensioner bolt.
- Rotate the tensioner clockwise to release belt tension.
- Slide the belt off the alternator pulley, then slowly return the tensioner to its resting position.
- Remove the belt completely if it is being replaced. Otherwise, leave it routed around the lower pulleys.
- Never let the tensioner snap back.
Step 5: Disconnect the Alternator Wiring
- Press the locking tab and unplug the small alternator electrical connector by hand. Pull on the connector body, not its wires.
- Lift the protective rubber cap from the main output terminal.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch-drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch-drive 6-inch extension to remove the output-terminal nut.
- Lift the charging cable from the terminal and position it away from the alternator.
Step 6: Remove the Old Alternator
- Support the alternator with one hand because it is heavy.
- Use a 13mm socket, 3/8-inch-drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch-drive 6-inch extension to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Note the location and length of each bolt during removal.
- Rock the alternator gently and lift it from its mounting bracket. Do not pry against plastic components or coolant hoses.
Step 7: Install the Replacement Alternator
- Lower the replacement alternator squarely into its mounting bracket.
- Start every mounting bolt by hand for several turns. This prevents cross-threading, which means damaging the bolt and bracket threads.
- Use a 13mm socket and 1/2-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the alternator mounting bolts evenly.
- Torque the alternator mounting bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect the Alternator Wiring
- Place the main charging cable fully onto the alternator output stud.
- Install its nut using a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch-drive torque wrench.
- Torque the alternator output-terminal nut to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the nut; the insulated output stud can break or rotate internally.
- Refit the protective rubber cap over the terminal.
- Push the small electrical connector into the alternator until its lock clicks.
Step 9: Reinstall the Drive Belt
- Route the belt around every pulley according to the under-hood diagram, leaving the alternator pulley until last.
- Make sure the belt ribs sit inside every grooved pulley. The smooth side of the belt must contact only smooth pulleys.
- Use a 15mm socket with the 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar, or the serpentine-belt removal tool, to rotate the tensioner clockwise.
- Slide the belt over the alternator pulley, then release the tensioner slowly.
- Inspect every pulley again to confirm the belt is centered and no rib is hanging over an edge.
- Misaligned belts can come off immediately.
Step 10: Reinstall the Air-Intake Duct
- Remove the cloth from the intake entrance and verify nothing fell inside.
- Position the air-intake duct and reconnect its breather hose by hand until the fitting locks.
- Reinstall any retaining clip using the trim-clip removal tool.
- Use an 8mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to tighten the intake clamps until snug. Do not crush the plastic duct.
Step 11: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative cable fully onto the negative battery post.
- Use an 8mm socket and 1/4-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the clamp.
- Torque the negative battery-terminal clamp to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Confirm the terminal cannot rotate by hand.
✅ After Repair
- 👀 Before starting the engine, verify that all tools are removed and the belt is properly seated.
- 🚗 Start the engine and watch the belt from a safe distance. It should run smoothly without wandering, squealing, or fluttering.
- 🔋 Confirm that the battery warning light turns off after the engine starts.
- 💡 Switch on the headlights and cabin fan. Look for steady lighting and normal accessory operation.
- 👂 Shut the engine off immediately if the belt moves off-center, the alternator makes grinding noises, or smoke appears.
- 🕒 Reset the clock and restore any radio presets that were lost.
- 🔍 Recheck the alternator electrical connections and battery terminal after the first drive.
