🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

• Put on the safety glasses and mechanic’s gloves.
• Use an 8mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
• Lift the negative cable from the battery and position it where it cannot spring back onto the terminal.
• Do not disconnect the positive cable unless access requires it.

Step 2: Remove the Air-Intake Duct

• Use an 8mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the clamps at both ends of the air-intake duct.
• Disconnect any attached breather hose by releasing its locking tab with a flat-blade screwdriver. Do not force the plastic fitting.
• Use a trim-clip removal tool for any retaining clip attached to the duct.
• Lift the duct out of the engine compartment and cover the open intake entrance with a clean, lint-free cloth.

Step 3: Record the Belt Routing

• Use the under-hood routing label or your photograph to identify how the belt passes around every pulley.
• Check the belt for cracks, missing ribs, shiny glazing, frayed edges, or oil contamination.
• Plan to install a new belt if any damage is present.

Step 4: Release and Remove the Drive Belt

• The belt tensioner is a spring-loaded arm that keeps the serpentine belt tight.
• Fit a 15mm socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar, or a serpentine-belt removal tool, onto the tensioner bolt.
• Rotate the tensioner clockwise to release belt tension.
• Slide the belt off the alternator pulley, then slowly return the tensioner to its resting position.
• Remove the belt completely if it is being replaced. Otherwise, leave it routed around the lower pulleys.
• Never let the tensioner snap back.

Step 5: Disconnect the Alternator Wiring

• Press the locking tab and unplug the small alternator electrical connector by hand. Pull on the connector body, not its wires.
• Lift the protective rubber cap from the main output terminal.
• Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch-drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch-drive 6-inch extension to remove the output-terminal nut.
• Lift the charging cable from the terminal and position it away from the alternator.

Step 6: Remove the Old Alternator

• Support the alternator with one hand because it is heavy.
• Use a 13mm socket, 3/8-inch-drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch-drive 6-inch extension to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
• Note the location and length of each bolt during removal.
• Rock the alternator gently and lift it from its mounting bracket. Do not pry against plastic components or coolant hoses.

Step 7: Install the Replacement Alternator

• Lower the replacement alternator squarely into its mounting bracket.
• Start every mounting bolt by hand for several turns. This prevents cross-threading, which means damaging the bolt and bracket threads.
• Use a 13mm socket and 1/2-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the alternator mounting bolts evenly.
• Torque the alternator mounting bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect the Alternator Wiring

• Place the main charging cable fully onto the alternator output stud.
• Install its nut using a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch-drive torque wrench.
• Torque the alternator output-terminal nut to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
• Do not overtighten the nut; the insulated output stud can break or rotate internally.
• Refit the protective rubber cap over the terminal.
• Push the small electrical connector into the alternator until its lock clicks.

Step 9: Reinstall the Drive Belt

• Route the belt around every pulley according to the under-hood diagram, leaving the alternator pulley until last.
• Make sure the belt ribs sit inside every grooved pulley. The smooth side of the belt must contact only smooth pulleys.
• Use a 15mm socket with the 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar, or the serpentine-belt removal tool, to rotate the tensioner clockwise.
• Slide the belt over the alternator pulley, then release the tensioner slowly.
• Inspect every pulley again to confirm the belt is centered and no rib is hanging over an edge.
• Misaligned belts can come off immediately.

Step 10: Reinstall the Air-Intake Duct

• Remove the cloth from the intake entrance and verify nothing fell inside.
• Position the air-intake duct and reconnect its breather hose by hand until the fitting locks.
• Reinstall any retaining clip using the trim-clip removal tool.
• Use an 8mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to tighten the intake clamps until snug. Do not crush the plastic duct.

Step 11: Reconnect the Battery

• Place the negative cable fully onto the negative battery post.
• Use an 8mm socket and 1/4-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the clamp.
• Torque the negative battery-terminal clamp to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
• Confirm the terminal cannot rotate by hand.
