🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative clamp from the battery post and position it where it cannot spring back into contact.
- Wait at least 90 seconds before working on the electrical system.
Step 2: Remove the Upper Engine Cover
- Pull upward evenly at the engine-cover mounting points using both gloved hands.
- If any rubber grommet remains on an engine stud, use 8-inch slip-joint pliers to reinstall it into the cover before reassembly.
- Set the cover somewhere clean and safe.
Step 3: Record the Belt Routing
- Compare the belt with the under-hood routing diagram and take a clear photograph.
- Confirm that you can identify the alternator pulley and spring-loaded tensioner pulley before releasing the belt.
- Photograph the routing before touching the belt.
Step 4: Release the Serpentine Belt
- Fit a 14mm shallow socket and 3/8-inch drive breaker bar onto the tensioner pulley bolt.
- Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise slowly to unload the belt. The tensioner is spring-loaded, so keep a firm grip.
- While holding the tensioner released, slide the belt off the alternator pulley using your free gloved hand.
- Slowly return the tensioner to its resting position. Do not let it snap back.
- Leave the belt routed around the remaining pulleys if it is being reused.
Step 5: Inspect the Belt and Pulleys
- Use your gloved hands to inspect both sides of the belt for cracks, missing ribs, frayed edges, shiny glazing, or oil contamination.
- Rotate the accessible idler and tensioner pulleys by hand. They should turn smoothly without grinding, looseness, or wobble.
- Replace the belt if damage is present. A noisy or loose pulley requires separate replacement before installing the belt.
Step 6: Disconnect the Alternator Wiring
- Press the locking tab and unplug the alternator’s small electrical connector. Use a small flat-blade screwdriver only if the tab cannot be pressed by hand.
- Use a nylon trim-clip removal tool to release any wiring-harness retainer attached to the alternator.
- Lift the rubber protective cap from the large alternator output terminal.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the output-terminal nut.
- Lift the cable eyelet from the terminal and move it aside without bending it sharply.
- Pull connectors by their housings, never their wires.
Step 7: Remove the Alternator Mounting Bolts
- Support the alternator with one gloved hand; it is heavier than it appears.
- Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the upper mounting bolt.
- Use a 14mm deep socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower mounting bolt.
- Remove the upper mounting bolt and keep both bolts organized for reinstallation.
Step 8: Remove the Old Alternator
- Use both gloved hands to rock the alternator gently within its mounting bracket.
- Lift the alternator upward through the available space without striking the radiator, fan, or wiring.
- Do not force the alternator with a metal pry tool; the aluminum bracket can crack.
Step 9: Compare the Replacement Alternator
- Place the old and new alternators side by side on a stable surface.
- Verify that the pulley diameter and grooves, electrical connector, output terminal, mounting ears, and case orientation match.
- Turn the replacement pulley by gloved hand. It should rotate smoothly without scraping or excessive looseness.
Step 10: Install the Replacement Alternator
- Lower the replacement alternator into its bracket using both gloved hands.
- Align the mounting holes and install both bolts by hand for several turns. Do not use the ratchet until the threads are correctly started.
- Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to seat both mounting bolts evenly.
- Use a 3/8-inch drive torque wrench with the appropriate 14mm socket to tighten both alternator mounting bolts to 43 Nm (32 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Reconnect the Alternator Wiring
- Place the output-cable eyelet squarely over the alternator output terminal.
- Install the terminal nut and use a 1/4-inch drive inch-pound torque wrench with a 10mm socket to tighten it to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the terminal nut; the insulated stud can break or rotate inside the alternator.
- Press the rubber protective cap fully over the output terminal.
- Reconnect the small electrical plug until its locking tab clicks.
- Use your fingers to reinstall the wiring-harness retainer in its bracket.
Step 12: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt
- Route the belt around every pulley according to the under-hood diagram, leaving the alternator pulley for last.
- Confirm that the belt ribs are centered inside every grooved pulley and that the smooth belt surface contacts only smooth pulleys.
- Fit a 14mm shallow socket and 3/8-inch drive breaker bar onto the tensioner bolt.
- Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise, slide the belt over the alternator pulley, and slowly release the tensioner.
- Use a safety-gloved hand to feel along each accessible pulley and verify that no belt rib is hanging over an edge.
Step 13: Reinstall the Engine Cover
- Align the engine-cover grommets with their mounting studs using both gloved hands.
- Press straight down at each mounting point until the cover is secure.
Step 14: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery clamp completely over the negative post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive inch-pound torque wrench to tighten the clamp nut to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Confirm that the clamp cannot rotate by hand. Do not overtighten it.
✅ After Repair
- 👀 Before starting the engine, make one final check that all tools are removed and the belt is seated correctly.
- 🚗 Start the engine and watch the belt from a safe distance. It should run centered without jumping, squealing, or wobbling.
- ⚡ Set a digital multimeter to DC volts and measure across the battery posts. With the engine running, normal charging voltage is generally about 13.5-14.8 volts.
- 💡 Switch on the headlights and blower motor. Confirm that the battery warning light remains off and charging voltage stays stable.
- 🛑 Shut the engine off immediately if the belt moves off-center, smoke appears, or a grinding noise develops.
- 🪟 Restore automatic-window operation if needed by fully lowering each affected window, then fully raising it and holding the switch for approximately one second.
