🔧 Impala - 12-Volt Battery Replacement
The battery is replaced by disconnecting the negative terminal first, removing the battery retainer, and lifting the battery from the engine compartment. Your Impala uses automatic stop/start, so install a vehicle-matched AGM battery—a sealed, vibration-resistant battery designed for frequent engine restarts.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-45 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧤 Wear safety glasses and chemical-resistant gloves because batteries contain corrosive acid.
- 🔥 Keep sparks, cigarettes, and open flames away from the battery.
- ⚡ Turn the ignition completely off and keep the key fob away from your Impala.
- 🔌 Always disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last.
- 🛑 Never let a metal tool touch both battery terminals or a positive terminal and body metal simultaneously.
- 🏋️ The battery is heavy. Lift it upright with both hands or use a battery carrier strap.
- 🔋 Do not substitute a conventional flooded battery for the specified AGM battery.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Impala on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and open the hood.
- ⏱️ Switch off the ignition, lights, climate control, and all accessories. Wait at least two minutes before disconnecting the battery.
- 🔑 Move the key fob at least 15 feet away so the vehicle does not wake up while you work.
- 🪟 Lower the driver’s window before disconnecting power so you cannot accidentally lock the key inside.
- 💾 Write down saved radio stations if desired. Battery replacement may reset the clock, window indexing, and some learned settings.
- 🔍 Confirm that the replacement battery’s terminal positions, dimensions, AGM construction, and electrical rating match the removed battery.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate and inspect the battery
- Wear the safety glasses and chemical-resistant work gloves.
- Locate the 12-volt battery in the engine compartment and remove its upper cover by releasing the retaining tabs by hand.
- Check for a swollen case, cracks, or leaking fluid. If the battery is leaking, keep it upright and avoid skin contact.
Step 2: Disconnect the negative terminal
- Identify the negative terminal by the minus symbol and black cable.
- Use the 10mm combination wrench or 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
- Twist the clamp gently and lift it straight off the battery post. Move the cable aside where it cannot spring back.
- Do not remove the nut completely from the clamp.
- Negative comes off first for safety.
Step 3: Disconnect the positive terminal
- Lift the red positive-terminal cover by hand.
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
- Lift the positive clamp from the post and position it away from the battery.
- Keep the wrench and clamp from touching surrounding body metal.
Step 4: Remove the battery retainer
- Locate the hold-down retainer at the base of the battery. The retainer prevents battery movement while driving.
- Use the 13mm socket, 150mm socket extension, and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the retainer bolt.
- Lift out the bolt and retainer, then place them somewhere clean.
Step 5: Remove the old battery
- Release any battery insulation cover or vent connection by hand if fitted.
- Attach the battery carrier strap securely to the battery.
- Lift the battery straight upward while keeping it level. Do not tip or drop it.
- Place the old battery upright on a stable surface.
- Use your legs, not your back.
Step 6: Clean and inspect the battery tray
- Inspect the tray and hold-down retainer for corrosion, damage, or loose hardware.
- Use the battery terminal cleaning brush to remove dry corrosion from the cable-terminal interiors.
- Verify that the cables are not frayed and that the terminal clamps are not cracked.
Step 7: Install the new AGM battery
- Use the battery carrier strap to lower the new battery into the tray with the positive and negative posts in the same positions as the original.
- Make sure the battery sits flat and is not resting on a cable or foreign object.
- Reconnect the insulation cover or vent connection if your original battery had one.
Step 8: Install the battery retainer
- Position the lower hold-down retainer against the battery base.
- Start the bolt by hand to prevent crossed threads.
- Use the 13mm socket, 150mm socket extension, and 5-30 Nm torque wrench to tighten the hold-down bolt to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Confirm that the battery cannot slide or rock in the tray.
Step 9: Connect the positive terminal
- Push the positive cable clamp fully down onto the positive battery post.
- Use the 10mm socket and 5-30 Nm torque wrench to tighten the clamp nut to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
- Apply a light coating of battery terminal protectant and close the red terminal cover.
- Do not overtighten the clamp; excessive force can damage the battery post.
Step 10: Connect the negative terminal
- Push the negative cable clamp fully down onto the negative battery post.
- Use the 10mm socket and 5-30 Nm torque wrench to tighten the clamp nut to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
- Apply a light coating of battery terminal protectant.
- Reinstall the battery cover by aligning its tabs and pressing it into place by hand.
✅ After Repair
- 🚗 Start your Impala and verify that the starter operates normally.
- 🔎 Check that the charging-system or battery warning light turns off after the engine starts.
- 🧪 Switch on the headlights and climate-control blower. Confirm that the lights remain steady and no warning messages appear.
- 🪟 If automatic window operation was lost, close each affected window fully, hold its switch upward for approximately two seconds, then test automatic operation.
- 🕒 Reset the clock and restore saved preferences through the infotainment settings if necessary.
- 🔋 Dedicated battery registration is not normally required after a like-for-like battery replacement on your Impala. A persistent charging or stop/start warning requires scan-tool diagnosis.
- ♻️ Return the old battery to a battery retailer or authorized recycling center. Do not place it in household waste.
