  • ๐Ÿ” Diagnose the original failure first. A compressor will not correct a faulty relay, pressure sensor, wiring fault, cooling-fan problem, or low refrigerant charge.
  • ๐Ÿ“ Check the replacement compressor instructions for its oil condition. Some compressors arrive fully filled; others contain only assembly oil.
  • ๐Ÿ”ง A manifold gauge set displays the high- and low-side refrigerant pressures. Beginners should have the recovery and recharge performed by an equipped shop.

๐Ÿ”จ Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover the refrigerant

  • Use the R-134a manifold gauge set and refrigerant recovery machine according to the equipment instructions.
  • Recover the complete refrigerant charge before opening either compressor line.
  • Use the recovery machine to confirm that system pressure remains at zero.
  • Never judge pressure by pressing a service valve.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Switch the ignition off and keep the key away from your Sienna.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
  • Remove and isolate the negative cable so it cannot spring back onto the terminal.

Step 3: Raise and support the front

  • Place the wheel chocks firmly against both rear wheels.
  • Use the floor jack at the specified front-center lifting point.
  • Place the jack stands beneath the reinforced front side support points, then lower your Sienna onto them.
  • Gently push the body to verify that it is stable before going underneath.

Step 4: Remove the lower shields

  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower engine-cover bolts.
  • Use the trim-clip removal tool to release the plastic retainers without tearing the shield.
  • Remove the right-side lower splash shield as needed to expose the compressor and belt.
  • Keep the fasteners arranged by location for reassembly.

Step 5: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Photograph or sketch the belt routing before removal.
  • Fit the 14mm serpentine-belt tensioner tool onto the automatic tensioner and rotate it slowly to release belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off the compressor pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Remove the belt if it will be replaced. Inspect every pulley for roughness or wobble by hand.
  • Never let the tensioner snap back.

Step 6: Disconnect the compressor wiring

  • Press the locking tab and unplug the compressor electrical connector by hand.
  • Use the flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to lift the lock gently; do not pull on the wires.
  • Release the harness clips from the compressor bracket and move the harness aside.

Step 7: Disconnect the refrigerant lines

  • Put on safety glasses and refrigerant-rated gloves.
  • Place the drain pan below the compressor to catch oil.
  • Use the appropriate metric socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the suction- and discharge-line retaining bolts.
  • Pull each line straight away without bending the aluminium pipe.
  • Immediately close every open fitting with clean plastic caps and plugs.
  • Discard both old O-rings. Do not reuse them.

Step 8: Remove the old compressor

  • Support the compressor with one hand. It is heavier than it appears.
  • Use the appropriate metric socket, 3/8-inch drive extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Remove the lower bolts first and the easiest upper bolt last.
  • Lower the compressor carefully through the bottom opening without damaging the radiator or refrigerant pipes.

Step 9: Inspect for internal damage

  • Use the oil measuring cup to drain the old compressor through its ports while rotating the hub by hand. Record the amount removed.
  • Inspect the drained oil for shiny metal flakes, black residue, or gritty material using the UV inspection lamp and glasses.
  • If metal debris is present, stop. Replace the condenser and receiver-drier desiccant element, and inspect or replace the expansion valve before installing the compressor.
  • Do not attempt to flush a modern parallel-flow condenser; debris can remain trapped inside it.

Step 10: Balance the compressor oil

  • Use the oil measuring cup to determine how much oil is supplied in the replacement compressor.
  • Follow the compressor manufacturer's instructions to adjust the replacement compressor to the amount removed from the old unit, unless other A/C components are also being replaced.
  • Use only Toyota-specified ND-OIL 8 compatible with R-134a. Keep the container sealed because A/C oil absorbs moisture rapidly.
  • Rotate the compressor hub by hand several turns to distribute the oil. Do not energize the compressor on the workbench.

Step 11: Install the replacement compressor

  • Lift the compressor into place and start every mounting bolt by hand to prevent crossed threads.
  • Use the metric socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the compressor mounting bolts evenly to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Do not use an impact wrench on the aluminium compressor housing or engine bracket.

Step 12: Connect the refrigerant lines

  • Lightly coat both new O-rings with clean ND-OIL 8 using a gloved fingertip.
  • Install the correct O-ring on each clean line fitting. Do not twist or stretch it.
  • Remove each protective plug immediately before connecting its line.
  • Seat the fittings squarely, then start the retaining bolts by hand.
  • Use the appropriate metric socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the line retaining bolts to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until its lock clicks.

Step 13: Reinstall the drive belt

  • Route the belt around every pulley according to your photograph, leaving the easiest smooth pulley for last.
  • Use the 14mm serpentine-belt tensioner tool to rotate the tensioner and slip the belt into place.
  • Release the tensioner slowly.
  • Inspect every grooved pulley and confirm that all belt ribs sit fully inside their grooves.

Step 14: Reinstall the lower shields

  • Position the right splash shield and lower engine cover.
  • Install the clips by hand, then use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to install the cover bolts snugly.
  • Do not overtighten the small bolts into plastic retainers.

Step 15: Lower the vehicle and reconnect the battery

  • Use the floor jack to raise your Sienna slightly and remove the jack stands.
  • Lower the vehicle completely and remove the wheel chocks.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable. Use the 10mm wrench to tighten the terminal clamp securely without crushing it.

Step 16: Evacuate and leak-test the system

  • Connect the R-134a manifold gauge set and A/C vacuum pump.
  • Evacuate the system for at least 45 minutes. Longer evacuation may be necessary in humid conditions.
  • Close both manifold valves and isolate the pump. Monitor vacuum for at least 10 minutes.
  • If vacuum decreases, locate and repair the leak before charging.

Step 17: Recharge by exact weight

  • Place the refrigerant container on the 1-gram refrigerant charging scale.
  • Charge only the exact R-134a weight printed on your Sienna's under-hood label.
  • Do not charge by pressure alone. Ambient temperature and airflow change pressure readings.
  • If you are not trained to operate A/C equipment, have an equipped shop perform evacuation and charging.

โœ… After Repair

  • โœ… Start the engine with the A/C switched off. Watch the belt and listen for scraping, knocking, or squealing.
  • โ„๏ธ Set the front and rear A/C to maximum cooling, select recirculation, and set the blower to high.
  • ๐Ÿ” Use the UV inspection lamp and glasses to check both compressor line joints for leaking oil or dye.
  • ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Confirm that center-vent temperature drops steadily and that both front and rear systems cool correctly.
  • ๐ŸŒ€ Confirm that the radiator cooling fans operate when required and that the compressor engages or regulates normally.
