  • 🚫 Never apply power to the compressor with an empty system.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • 🏷️ Read the under-hood A/C label and record the refrigerant type and exact charge weight. Charge by this label, not by pressure alone.
  • 🔍 Diagnose the failure first. Low refrigerant, damaged wiring, a pressure-sensor fault, or an IPDM control fault can imitate compressor failure.
  • ♻️ Use an R-134a recovery machine to recover the complete refrigerant charge before loosening any connection.
  • 🔋 Turn the ignition off, wait at least three minutes, then disconnect the negative battery terminal with a 10mm socket.
  • 🛢️ Keep all refrigerant fittings capped. Moisture damages the desiccant and reacts with refrigerant oil.
  • 📏 Check the replacement compressor instructions because some units arrive fully oiled while others contain only shipping oil.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover the Refrigerant

  • Connect the R-134a manifold gauge set to the high- and low-side service ports.
  • Use the refrigerant identifier to verify that the system contains uncontaminated R-134a.
  • Use the R-134a recovery machine according to its instructions until recovery is complete and both gauges remain at zero pressure.
  • Record the recovered refrigerant weight. A low recovered amount indicates a leak that must also be repaired.

Step 2: Raise and Secure the Vehicle

  • Place the floor jack at the approved front lifting point and raise your Pathfinder.
  • Lower it securely onto jack stands at the front support points.
  • Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool and 10mm socket to remove the lower engine splash shield as needed for compressor access.
  • Keep fasteners arranged in removal order.

Step 3: Remove the Drive Belt

  • Photograph or sketch the belt routing before removal.
  • Fit the serpentine-belt tool with its 14mm socket to the automatic tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner against spring pressure, slide the belt off the compressor pulley, and slowly release the tensioner.
  • Inspect the belt for cracks, glazing, missing ribs, or oil contamination. Replace it if damaged.

Step 4: Disconnect the Compressor Electrical Connector

  • Use the flat-tip screwdriver only if needed to release the locking tab without breaking it.
  • Unplug the compressor electrical connector and move the harness away from the mounting area.
  • Inspect the connector for overheated terminals, corrosion, or oil contamination.

Step 5: Disconnect the Refrigerant Lines

  • Confirm with the R-134a manifold gauge set that both sides still show zero pressure.
  • Use the appropriate 10mm or 12mm socket to remove the suction- and discharge-line retaining bolts.
  • Pull each line straight away from the compressor. Do not pry against the aluminum sealing face.
  • Immediately seal the open lines with rubber refrigerant-line caps.
  • Discard both old O-rings; they must not be reused.

Step 6: Remove the Old Compressor

  • Support the compressor by hand because it is heavier than it appears.
  • Use the 14mm socket, ratchet, and extensions to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
  • Lower the compressor through the bottom opening without striking the radiator, condenser, or refrigerant lines.
  • Retain the mounting bolts unless the replacement compressor supplies new ones.

Step 7: Check for Internal Contamination

  • Drain the old compressor into the clean graduated oil measuring cylinder while rotating its shaft by hand.
  • Inspect the oil for silver particles, black sludge, or burnt odor.
  • If metal is present, replace the receiver-drier element and expansion valve. Replace any parallel-flow condenser that cannot be reliably cleaned.
  • Do not flush the new compressor, expansion valve, receiver-drier, or rubber hose sections with an unapproved solvent.
  • Metal debris will quickly ruin a new compressor.

Step 8: Balance the Compressor Oil

  • Use the clean graduated oil measuring cylinder to measure the amount removed from the old compressor.
  • Check the replacement compressor instructions to determine how much oil it already contains.
  • Drain or add the specified compressor oil so the installed amount matches Nissan’s component-replacement requirement and the measured loss.
  • Rotate the new compressor shaft by hand approximately ten turns to distribute its oil.
  • Never add the system’s full oil capacity unless the entire system has been flushed or replaced and is completely dry.

Step 9: Install the New Compressor

  • Lift the new compressor into position and start every mounting bolt by hand.
  • Use the 14mm socket to snug the mounting bolts evenly.
  • Use the 20-100 Nm torque wrench and 14mm socket to tighten the compressor mounting bolts to 45 Nm (33 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect the electrical connector by hand until its locking tab clicks.

Step 10: Reconnect the Refrigerant Lines

  • Use refrigerant-rated gloves to install new O-rings of the exact original size.
  • Lightly coat each O-ring with the same compressor oil used in the system. Do not soak it.
  • Push each fitting straight onto the compressor without twisting or pinching the O-ring.
  • Install the retaining bolts by hand, then tighten them with the 3-60 Nm torque wrench and correct socket to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten the aluminum fittings.

Step 11: Reinstall the Drive Belt

  • Route the belt around every pulley according to the routing diagram, leaving the easiest pulley for last.
  • Use the serpentine-belt tool with 14mm socket to rotate the tensioner and slip the belt into place.
  • Slowly release the tensioner and visually confirm that every belt rib is seated in its pulley groove.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect the crankshaft pulley from below.

Step 12: Evacuate and Leak-Test the System

  • Connect the R-134a manifold gauge set, vacuum pump, and digital micron vacuum gauge.
  • Operate the vacuum pump for at least 45 minutes and evacuate the system below 500 microns.
  • Close the manifold valves and switch off the pump. The vacuum should remain stable for at least 10 minutes.
  • If vacuum rises, use the UV refrigerant leak detector or electronic leak detector to locate and repair the leak before charging.

Step 13: Recharge by Exact Weight

  • Place the R-134a supply on the electronic refrigerant scale.
  • With the engine off, introduce as much of the specified charge as the system accepts through the charging equipment.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal with the 10mm socket and tighten it to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
  • Start the engine, set the blower high and temperature to maximum cooling, then complete charging through the low side according to the recovery-machine instructions.
  • Add exactly the refrigerant weight printed on your Pathfinder’s under-hood A/C label. Never charge liquid refrigerant directly into the low side of a running compressor.

Step 14: Reassemble the Lower Covers

  • Turn the engine off and disconnect the service couplers using refrigerant-rated gloves.
  • Install both service-port caps by hand; the caps are part of the refrigerant seal.
  • Use the 10mm socket and plastic trim-clip removal tool to reinstall the splash shield and all retained fasteners.
  • Use the floor jack to raise your Pathfinder, remove the jack stands, and lower it carefully.

✅ After Repair

  • ❄️ Run the A/C at maximum cooling with the doors open for several minutes, then check that vent temperature drops steadily.
  • 🔍 Use the electronic leak detector around both compressor fittings, service ports, and the compressor body.
  • 👂 Listen for grinding, rattling, belt squeal, or repeated rapid compressor cycling.
  • 📊 Compare high- and low-side pressures with Nissan specifications for the measured ambient temperature. Pressure alone does not determine charge quantity.
  • 🛢️ Inspect the compressor connections again after a short road test. An oily fitting usually indicates a refrigerant leak.
  • ⚠️ Stop the engine immediately if the belt tracks incorrectly or the compressor becomes noisy.
