Because refrigerant equipment is required, a beginner can perform the mechanical work, but refrigerant recovery and charging should be handled by a qualified automotive A/C shop.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never loosen an A/C line until a shop has completely recovered the refrigerant. Escaping refrigerant can cause severe frostbite and eye injury.
  • ⚠️ Refrigerant recovery requires certified equipment; intentionally venting refrigerant is unsafe and may violate local environmental regulations.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery terminal before unplugging or removing the compressor.
  • ⚠️ Allow the engine and exhaust system to cool completely before working underneath your Avalon.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands. Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ Keep every A/C opening capped. Moisture and dirt can quickly damage the new compressor.
  • ⚠️ If the old compressor failed internally and produced metal debris, replace the condenser and expansion valve. Do not install a new compressor into a contaminated system.

  • 📋 Park your Avalon on level pavement, select Park, apply the parking brake, and switch the climate control and ignition off.

  • 📋 Record the refrigerant type and exact charge weight shown on the under-hood A/C label. Charge by weight, not by pressure alone.
  • 📋 Confirm whether the replacement compressor arrives dry or prefilled with oil. Do not add a complete system oil quantity to a prefilled compressor.
  • 📋 The compressor oil must be balanced against the oil drained from the old unit. Too much or too little oil can cause poor cooling or compressor damage.
  • 📋 No infotainment service mode, scan-tool command, battery registration, or coding is required for this repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Recover the refrigerant

  • Connect an automotive R-134a recovery and recharge station to the high- and low-pressure service ports.
  • Use the station’s recovery function to remove the complete refrigerant charge according to the equipment instructions.
  • Confirm both gauges remain at zero pressure before disconnecting any refrigerant line.
  • If you do not have recovery equipment, have a qualified A/C shop complete this step.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Open the hood and use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
  • Remove the clamp and position it where it cannot touch the battery post.
  • Wait at least 90 seconds before continuing.

Step 3: Raise and support the vehicle

  • Place wheel chocks securely behind both rear wheels.
  • Use the 2-ton floor jack at the front-center lifting point, then lower your Avalon onto 2-ton jack stands at the reinforced side support points.
  • Gently push the vehicle to verify it is stable before going underneath.

Step 4: Remove the lower engine covers

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the lower-cover bolts.
  • Use a plastic trim-clip removal tool to release the plastic retainers without breaking them.
  • Lower the covers and organize the fasteners by location.
  • Photograph each fastener location before removal.

Step 5: Remove the accessory drive belt

  • Study the belt-routing diagram under the hood and take a clear photograph of the installed belt.
  • Place a 14mm socket and breaker bar on the automatic belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner clockwise to release belt tension, then slide the belt off the compressor pulley.
  • Slowly return the tensioner to its resting position. Do not allow it to snap back.
  • Remove the belt if it is being replaced; otherwise secure it away from the work area.

Step 6: Disconnect the compressor wiring

  • Use a small flat-tip screwdriver only if needed to lift the connector lock gently.
  • Press the release tab and unplug the compressor electrical connector by holding the connector body, not the wires.
  • Release the wiring harness from its compressor retaining clips with the plastic trim-clip removal tool.

Step 7: Disconnect the refrigerant lines

  • Put on safety glasses and gloves, then verify the system still reads zero pressure on the R-134a manifold gauge set.
  • Use the correctly fitting metric socket from the 8mm-19mm socket set to remove the suction- and discharge-line retaining bolts.
  • Pull each line straight away from the compressor. Do not twist or sharply bend the aluminum pipes.
  • Immediately seal every open line with A/C line caps and plugs.
  • Remove and discard both old O-rings. Never reuse refrigerant O-rings.

Step 8: Remove the old compressor

  • Support the compressor with one hand because it is heavy and awkward.
  • Use a metric socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet to loosen the compressor mounting bolts evenly.
  • Remove the lower bolts first and the upper bolt last, then carefully lower the compressor through the underside.
  • Keep the compressor upright to avoid spilling oil before it can be measured.

Step 9: Inspect for internal compressor damage

  • Use the clean graduated measuring cylinder to drain oil from the old compressor through its ports while rotating the clutch hub by hand.
  • Inspect the oil for silver particles, dark sludge, or burned material.
  • If debris is present, replace the condenser, receiver/drier, and expansion valve before installing the compressor. The condenser’s narrow parallel passages cannot be reliably cleaned after a destructive compressor failure.
  • If the old oil is clean, measure and record the amount drained.

Step 10: Balance the compressor oil

  • Read the replacement compressor instructions to determine whether it is dry or prefilled with ND-OIL 8.
  • Use the clean graduated measuring cylinder to adjust the new compressor so it contains the same amount removed from the old compressor, unless its manufacturer specifies a different balancing method.
  • Use only Toyota-spec ND-OIL 8. Keep the oil container sealed because compressor oil rapidly absorbs moisture.
  • Turn the new compressor clutch hub by hand approximately 10 revolutions to distribute the oil internally.
  • Do not rotate the clutch hub with a powered tool.

Step 11: Install the new compressor

  • Lift the compressor into position and start every mounting bolt by hand to prevent crossed threads.
  • Use the metric socket, extension, and ratchet to seat the bolts evenly.
  • Use the 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the compressor mounting bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Confirm no wiring or hoses are trapped behind the compressor.

Step 12: Reconnect the refrigerant lines

  • Lightly coat both new O-rings with clean ND-OIL 8 using a gloved fingertip.
  • Install each O-ring in its correct line groove without twisting it.
  • Remove the A/C line caps and plugs immediately before connecting each line.
  • Push the lines squarely into the compressor and start the retaining bolts by hand.
  • Use the inch-pound torque wrench and correctly fitting metric socket to tighten each compressor line bolt to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten the line bolts; the aluminum fittings can distort.

Step 13: Reconnect the wiring and drive belt

  • Push the electrical connector into the compressor until its lock clicks, then reinstall the harness retainers by hand.
  • Route the belt exactly as shown in the routing diagram.
  • Use the 14mm socket and breaker bar to rotate the tensioner clockwise, slip the belt over the final pulley, and release the tensioner slowly.
  • Use a flashlight to verify every belt rib is seated correctly in every grooved pulley.

Step 14: Evacuate and leak-test the system

  • Connect the R-134a manifold gauge set and two-stage vacuum pump to the service ports.
  • Run the vacuum pump for at least 45 minutes to remove air and moisture.
  • Close both manifold valves and switch off the pump.
  • Monitor the gauges for at least 15 minutes. Any vacuum loss requires finding and repairing the leak before charging.
  • Use an electronic refrigerant leak detector around the compressor fittings and all components disturbed during the repair.

Step 15: Recharge the A/C system

  • Place the refrigerant supply on an electronic refrigerant scale accurate to 10 grams.
  • Use the recovery and recharge station to install the exact R-134a weight printed on your Avalon’s under-hood A/C label.
  • Do not estimate the charge or use pressure alone. Even a small overcharge or undercharge can reduce cooling and damage the compressor.
  • If proper charging equipment is unavailable, leave the system under vacuum and have an automotive A/C shop perform this step.

Step 16: Reassemble and lower the vehicle

  • Install the lower engine covers and retainers using the plastic trim-clip removal tool and 10mm socket.
  • Tighten the small lower-cover bolts only until snug; do not crush the plastic panels.
  • Use the floor jack to raise your Avalon, remove the jack stands, and lower the vehicle carefully.
  • Remove the rear wheel chocks.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal with the 10mm socket and tighten it securely without overtightening.

  • ✅ Start the engine with the A/C switched off and watch the belt for correct tracking.
  • ✅ Switch the A/C on, select maximum cooling and recirculation, and set the blower to medium-high.
  • ✅ Verify the compressor operates quietly and the center vents begin producing cold air.
  • ✅ Use the R-134a manifold gauge set to check system pressures against the ambient-temperature specifications of the A/C service equipment.
  • ✅ Use the electronic refrigerant leak detector around both compressor line connections and service ports.
  • ✅ Check underneath for oil, refrigerant dye, loose covers, abnormal vibration, or belt noise.
  • ✅ Reset the clock and saved audio settings if battery disconnection erased them. No compressor coding or battery registration is required.
  • ✅ If cooling is weak, pressures are abnormal, or the compressor is noisy, switch the A/C off immediately and diagnose the fault before continued use.
