🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Recover the Refrigerant
- Remove the high- and low-side service-port caps by hand.
- Connect the R-134a recovery machine according to its instructions. A recovery machine safely removes and stores refrigerant.
- Recover the system until the machine completes its cycle and both gauges remain at zero pressure.
- Disconnect the machine and reinstall the service-port caps temporarily.
- Do not continue if either gauge shows pressure.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Truck
- Use the 3-ton floor jack at the approved front lifting point.
- Place the 3-ton jack stands beneath the front frame rails and lower your F-150 onto them.
- Gently push the body to confirm it is stable before going underneath.
Step 3: Remove the Lower Shield
- Use an 8mm or 10mm socket, as fitted, to remove the lower splash-shield fasteners.
- Lower the shield and arrange the fasteners so they return to their original positions.
Step 4: Remove the Serpentine Belt
- Photograph or note the factory belt-routing diagram before removing the belt.
- Insert the 1/2-inch-drive serpentine-belt tool into the belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner against spring pressure and slide the belt off the A/C compressor pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner. Never let it snap back.
- Remove the belt completely if it needs replacement; otherwise secure it away from the compressor.
- Keep the belt ribs clean and dry.
Step 5: Disconnect the Compressor Electrical Connector
- Press the locking tab by hand and unplug the compressor clutch connector.
- Use the 6-inch flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to gently release the lock.
- Do not pull on the wires.
Step 6: Disconnect the Refrigerant Lines
- Place the 2-quart drain pan beneath the compressor.
- Use the correctly fitting 10mm or 13mm socket to remove the suction-and-discharge line manifold retaining bolt.
- Carefully pull the line manifold straight away from the compressor. Do not bend or twist the aluminum lines.
- Remove the old O-rings and immediately install plastic refrigerant-line caps on the open lines.
- Discard the old O-rings; never reuse refrigerant seals.
Step 7: Remove the Old Compressor
- Support the compressor with one hand or a suitable support.
- Use a 13mm or 15mm socket with the 6-inch extension to remove the compressor mounting bolts.
- Note each bolt’s location because bolt lengths may differ.
- Lower the compressor carefully without striking the refrigerant lines or radiator hose.
Step 8: Check for Internal Contamination
- Use the graduated measuring cup to drain oil from the old compressor while rotating its hub by hand.
- Inspect the oil in bright light. Clean oil may be clear or lightly colored; gray oil, black oil, or metal particles indicate internal failure.
- If metal debris is present, do not install only a compressor. Replace the condenser/desiccant component and expansion valve, and professionally clean all reusable lines.
- Do not flush the new compressor, condenser, receiver-drier, or expansion valve.
Step 9: Balance the Compressor Oil
- Use the graduated measuring cup to measure the oil drained from the old compressor.
- Drain and measure the shipping oil from the new compressor unless its instructions specifically say it contains the correct vehicle charge.
- Add the same measured quantity of clean Ford-specification PAG oil to the new compressor when the rest of the system remains installed and uncontaminated.
- If other A/C components are replaced, use Ford’s component oil-allocation procedure rather than matching only the old compressor.
- Do not guess the oil quantity. Too much or too little oil can damage the compressor.
- Rotate the new compressor hub by hand approximately 10 turns to distribute the oil.
Step 10: Install the New Compressor
- Lift the new compressor into the bracket without using the refrigerant lines as support.
- Start every mounting bolt by hand to prevent crossed threads.
- Use the 13mm or 15mm socket to snug the bolts evenly.
- Use the foot-pound torque wrench to tighten the compressor mounting bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Reconnect the Refrigerant Lines
- Remove the plastic refrigerant-line caps only when ready to connect the lines.
- Lightly coat the new O-rings with clean Ford-specification PAG oil using a gloved fingertip.
- Install the new O-rings without twisting them.
- Seat the line manifold squarely against the compressor by hand.
- Install the retaining bolt with the 10mm or 13mm socket.
- Use the inch-pound torque wrench to tighten the manifold bolt to 18 Nm (159 in-lbs).
- Reconnect the compressor clutch electrical connector until its lock clicks.
Step 12: Reinstall the Drive Belt
- Route the belt according to the factory diagram, leaving the compressor pulley for last.
- Use the 1/2-inch-drive serpentine-belt tool to rotate the tensioner.
- Slide the belt onto the compressor pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
- Check every pulley by sight and touch to confirm all belt ribs are seated correctly.
Step 13: Reinstall the Lower Shield
- Position the lower shield and start every fastener by hand.
- Use the 8mm or 10mm socket to tighten the fasteners until seated. Do not overtighten plastic retainers.
- Raise your F-150 with the floor jack, remove the jack stands, and lower it to the ground.
Step 14: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery terminal fully onto the battery post.
- Use the 8mm socket to tighten the terminal to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
- Confirm the terminal cannot rotate by hand.
Step 15: Evacuate and Leak-Test the System
- Connect the R-134a manifold gauge set and two-stage vacuum pump to the service ports.
- Open both manifold valves and run the vacuum pump for at least 45 minutes.
- Close both manifold valves and switch off the pump.
- Hold the system under vacuum for at least 15 minutes. A loss of vacuum indicates a leak that must be repaired before charging.
- A vacuum test does not replace a pressurized electronic leak test.
Step 16: Recharge by Exact Weight
- Place the R-134a cylinder on the electronic refrigerant scale.
- Purge air from the charging hose according to the manifold equipment instructions.
- Charge exactly the refrigerant weight printed on your F-150’s underhood A/C label.
- Do not use a generic capacity or estimate from gauge pressure.
- Never open the high-side manifold valve while charging with the engine running.
