🔧 Sienna - 12-Volt Battery Replacement

The battery is located under the hood on the driver’s side. Replacement involves disconnecting the negative cable first, removing the hold-down bracket, installing the new battery, and reconnecting the cables in reverse order.

  • 🏋️ The battery is heavy. Lift it with both hands and keep it upright.

  • 3/8-inch-drive 6-inch extension
  • 10mm torque wrench rated 2-20 Nm
  • Battery terminal puller (specialty)

  • Digital multimeter rated 20V DC minimum
  • Plastic trim brush with stiff bristles
  • Chemical-resistant nitrile gloves
  • ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚐 Park your Sienna on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and open the hood.
  • 🔑 Turn off the ignition, lights, climate control, and all accessories. Keep the smart key at least 15 feet away.
  • ⏱️ Wait at least 90 seconds after switching the ignition off before disconnecting the battery. This allows vehicle control modules to shut down.
  • 📻 Record radio presets and preferred settings. Disconnecting the battery may reset the clock, trip information, and automatic window functions.
  • 🔋 Battery registration, scan-tool coding, and an infotainment service mode are not required for this replacement.
  • 🧹 If corrosion is present, do not blow or brush the dry powder into the air.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Check the replacement battery

  • Use the digital multimeter set to DC volts and touch red to positive and black to negative.
  • A fully charged replacement battery should read approximately 12.6 volts before installation.
  • Confirm that the positive and negative posts match the original battery positions.
  • Compare both batteries before removing any packaging.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative cable

  • Identify the negative terminal by its minus symbol and black cable.
  • Use the 10mm socket, 3/8-inch-drive ratchet, and 6-inch extension to loosen the negative terminal nut.
  • Twist and lift the terminal from the battery post. Use the battery terminal puller if it will not release; do not pry against the battery case.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the post.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive cable

  • Open the red positive-terminal cover while wearing the safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the positive terminal nut.
  • Lift the terminal straight off. Use the battery terminal puller if necessary.
  • Keep the positive terminal away from body metal and close the protective cover over it where possible.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • The hold-down is the metal bar that prevents the battery from moving.
  • Use the 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the hold-down fasteners.
  • Unhook the hold-down rods carefully and remove the bar without dropping the rods into the engine compartment.
  • Note the orientation of the bar and rods for reinstallation.

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Put on the nitrile gloves and safety glasses before lifting.
  • Grip the battery handle or opposite lower edges with both hands.
  • Lift the battery straight up and keep it upright. Place it on a stable surface away from children and pets.
  • Inspect the tray for cracks, corrosion, or trapped debris.

Step 6: Clean the tray and terminals

  • Use the plastic trim brush to remove loose debris from the battery tray.
  • Use the battery terminal cleaning brush on the inside of both cable terminals until the contact surfaces are clean.
  • Stop if a cable terminal is cracked, badly thinned, or will not tighten securely; it must be replaced.
  • Clean metal makes charging and starting more reliable.

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Lift the new battery with both hands and lower it squarely into the tray.
  • Position the positive and negative posts exactly as they were on the original battery.
  • Make sure the bottom of the battery sits flat and no cable is trapped underneath it.

Step 8: Reinstall the battery hold-down

  • Position the hold-down bar and engage both rods in their original mounting points.
  • Use the 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the fasteners evenly.
  • Torque the battery hold-down fasteners to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Push the battery firmly in every direction. It must not slide or rock.
  • Do not crush the plastic battery case.

Step 9: Connect the positive cable

  • Place the positive terminal fully down over the positive battery post.
  • Use the 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the terminal nut.
  • Torque the positive terminal nut to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
  • Apply a light coating of battery terminal protectant, then close the red terminal cover.

Step 10: Connect the negative cable

  • Place the negative terminal fully down over the negative battery post.
  • Use the 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the terminal nut.
  • Torque the negative terminal nut to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
  • Apply a light coating of battery terminal protectant.
  • Gently twist both terminals by hand. Neither terminal should move.

Step 11: Verify the installation

  • Use the digital multimeter set to DC volts to check voltage across the battery terminals.
  • With the engine off, expect approximately 12.4-12.7 volts from a charged battery.
  • Start the engine and check again. Charging voltage will generally rise above resting battery voltage.
  • Switch the engine off immediately if a terminal becomes hot, smokes, or sparks continuously.

✅ After Repair

  • 🚦 Start your Sienna and confirm that the engine cranks normally and no unexpected warning remains illuminated.
  • 🪟 Reinitialize each affected automatic window by closing it fully, then holding the window switch in the up position for approximately one second.
  • 🕒 Reset the clock, radio presets, trip information, and personal settings as needed.
  • 🛞 If the electric power steering warning appears temporarily, drive slowly in a safe area and turn the steering wheel smoothly from center toward each side. The system commonly relearns after battery power is restored.
  • 🔍 Recheck that the battery cannot move and that both cable terminals remain tight.
  • ♻️ Return the old lead-acid battery to a battery retailer or authorized recycling facility. Do not place it in household waste.
