  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool completely before removing the spark plugs. The aluminum cylinder heads are easily damaged when hot.
  • 🛡️ Wear safety glasses when blowing dirt away from the plug wells.
  • 🔋 Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the ignition coils.
  • 🚫 Do not apply anti-seize compound to the new spark-plug threads. It can cause over-tightening.
  • 🧹 Never allow dirt, tools, or loose hardware to fall into an open spark-plug hole.

Replace all six spark plugs together. The specified gap is 0.049-0.053 inch (1.25-1.35 mm); verify the under-hood emissions label if it lists a different specification.


📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your F-150 on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and allow the engine to become completely cold.
  • 📸 Photograph the intake duct and electrical connections before disassembly.
  • 🔢 Work on one ignition coil and spark plug at a time. This prevents mixing up electrical connectors.
  • 🔌 Open the hood and keep the ignition switched off. No infotainment or scan-tool procedure is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
  • Lift the clamp from the battery post with your gloved hand and position it where it cannot spring back.

Step 2: Remove the Air-Intake Duct

  • Use an 8mm socket, 3-inch extension, and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to loosen the clamps connecting the air duct to the air-cleaner housing and throttle body.
  • Release any attached breather-hose fitting by hand. Press its locking tabs rather than pulling on the hose.
  • Lift the intake duct away with both gloved hands and cover the throttle-body opening with a clean shop towel.
  • Photograph every hose before disconnecting it.

Step 3: Expose the Ignition Coils

  • Move only the hoses or wiring retainers that block direct coil access, using gloved fingers to release their plastic clips.
  • Do not pull on wiring or use the ratchet as a pry tool.
  • The ignition coils are the six narrow electrical units positioned directly above the spark plugs.

Step 4: Remove the First Ignition Coil

  • Press the connector lock with a gloved finger, then pull the connector straight from the coil body. Do not pull the wires.
  • Use an 8mm socket, 3-inch extension, and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove the coil retaining bolt.
  • Twist the coil gently with your gloved hand and pull it straight upward.
  • Inspect the rubber boot for cracking, oil, moisture, or burned marks. Replace a damaged coil boot or coil before reassembly.

Step 5: Clean the Spark-Plug Well

  • Put on safety glasses, then use the compressed-air blow gun to remove sand and dirt from around the spark plug.
  • Direct the air away from your face and keep the plug installed while cleaning.
  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe accessible dirt from the top of the well.

Step 6: Remove the Old Spark Plug

  • Use the 5/8-inch spark plug socket, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to turn the plug counterclockwise.
  • Use the universal-joint extension only where straight access is limited. A universal joint allows the socket to approach at a slight angle.
  • Keep the extension centered so the ceramic insulator does not crack.
  • Lift the loosened spark plug out with the magnetic socket.
  • Stop if the plug requires excessive force. Apply gentle tightening and loosening motions rather than forcing the cylinder-head threads.

Step 7: Check the New Spark Plug

  • Use the wire-type spark plug gap gauge to confirm a gap of 0.049-0.053 inch (1.25-1.35 mm).
  • Do not force a flat wedge gauge between fine-wire electrodes.
  • Inspect the ceramic body and threads under good lighting. Do not install a dropped or cracked plug.
  • Leave the plug threads clean and dry. Do not apply anti-seize.

Step 8: Install the New Spark Plug

  • Place the new plug into the 5/8-inch magnetic spark plug socket and 6-inch extension.
  • Without attaching the ratchet, turn the extension clockwise by hand for several full turns. It should thread smoothly with almost no resistance.
  • If resistance is felt immediately, remove the plug and restart it. This prevents cross-threading, which means cutting incorrect threads into the cylinder head.
  • Attach the inch-pound torque wrench and tighten the plug to 133 in-lbs (15 Nm or 11 ft-lbs).
  • Hand-start every plug before using a wrench.

Step 9: Reinstall the Ignition Coil

  • Use a gloved fingertip to apply a very small film of dielectric grease inside the end of the coil boot. Keep grease away from the metal plug terminal and threads.
  • Push the coil straight onto the spark plug with your gloved hand until fully seated.
  • Install the retaining bolt with the 8mm socket and 3-inch extension.
  • Use the inch-pound torque wrench to tighten the coil bolt to 62 in-lbs (7 Nm).
  • Push the electrical connector onto the coil by hand until its lock clicks.

Step 10: Replace the Remaining Five Plugs

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 9 for each remaining cylinder using the same listed tools.
  • Use the 3-inch extension where space permits and the 6-inch or universal-joint extension where access is restricted.
  • Complete one cylinder before moving to the next so no plug hole remains open unnecessarily.

Step 11: Reinstall the Air-Intake Duct

  • Remove the clean shop towel from the throttle body and verify that nothing is inside the opening.
  • Position the intake duct with both gloved hands and reconnect the breather-hose fitting until it clicks.
  • Use an 8mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to tighten both intake clamps until the duct cannot rotate. Do not crush the plastic duct.
  • Return all wiring and hose retainers to their original positions using gloved fingers.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative terminal clamp fully onto the battery post with your gloved hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to tighten the clamp securely. Do not overtighten or distort the terminal.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔍 Check the engine compartment for loose tools, disconnected hoses, or unplugged coil connectors.
  • 🚙 Start the engine and let it idle for several minutes. A brief uneven idle may occur while the engine controls relearn after battery disconnection.
  • ⚠️ Switch the engine off immediately if the check-engine light flashes, the engine shakes severely, or you hear a sharp air leak.
  • 🧪 Take a short test drive and confirm smooth acceleration with no warning lights.
  • 🕒 After the test drive, inspect the intake duct and electrical connectors again. Do not retighten the spark plugs while the engine is hot.
  • 📻 Restore the clock and saved audio settings if they were lost during battery disconnection.
