🔧 Trax - Side View Mirror Assembly Replacement
This procedure replaces the complete driver-side or passenger-side mirror assembly. The inner door trim panel must be loosened or removed to reach the electrical connector and three mirror retaining nuts.
Assumption: Replacement mirrors match your Trax’s original power, heating, folding, and turn-signal features.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours per side
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Switch the ignition off and keep the key away from the vehicle before disconnecting the mirror.
- 🧤 Wear gloves because the door panel edges and damaged mirror glass can be sharp.
- 🪟 Support the mirror before removing its final nut so it cannot fall against the door or window.
- 🔌 Battery disconnection is not normally required. Do not switch the ignition on while door wiring is disconnected.
- 🚫 Do not pull the door panel away forcefully; wiring remains attached behind it.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Driver-side complete mirror assembly with matching original features - Qty: 1, if replacing driver side
- Passenger-side complete mirror assembly with matching original features - Qty: 1, if replacing passenger side
- Front door trim-panel retainers - Qty: 3-5 per door, as needed
Replace only the damaged side unless both mirrors are defective. Compare the electrical connector, mounting studs, heating function, and turn-signal provision before installation.
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Trax on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and lower the window completely.
- 🔑 Switch the ignition off and move the key or transmitter away from the vehicle.
- 🛡️ Use 25mm automotive masking tape around the mirror base and upper door edge to protect the paint.
- 📦 Unpack the replacement mirror and compare its connector, three mounting studs, gasket, housing shape, and installed features with the old mirror.
- 🌡️ If working in cold weather, warm the interior first. Cold plastic trim clips break more easily.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Interior Mirror Trim Cover
- Use a plastic trim-removal tool to pry the triangular trim cover inward from the upper-front corner of the door.
- Release its clips gradually and lift the cover away. A trim-removal tool is a nonmetal pry tool that helps prevent scratches.
- Do not use excessive force if the cover remains trapped by the main door panel.
- Keep each fastener grouped by location.
Step 2: Remove the Door-Pull Fastener Cover
- Use a small flat-tip screwdriver to lift the small cover inside or beneath the interior door-pull handle.
- Wrap the screwdriver tip with automotive masking tape before touching visible plastic.
- Remove the exposed screw with a Torx T20 screwdriver or the exposed bolt with a 7mm socket and 1/4-inch-drive ratchet, according to the original fastener fitted.
Step 3: Remove the Interior Handle Trim and Remaining Fasteners
- Use a plastic trim-removal tool to release the trim around the interior release handle.
- Remove the exposed door-panel fastener with a 7mm socket and 1/4-inch-drive ratchet.
- Check the bottom edge of the panel and remove any additional factory 7mm fastener with the same socket.
- Place all removed fasteners where they cannot fall into the door.
Step 4: Release the Door Trim Panel
- Insert a plastic trim-removal tool between the lower door panel and the metal door shell.
- Work around the bottom and both sides, releasing one push-in retainer at a time. A retainer is the plastic clip securing the panel to the door.
- Use both hands to lift the panel straight upward and release it from the window ledge.
- Support the panel instead of allowing it to hang from its wires or cables.
Step 5: Disconnect the Door-Panel Connections
- Use a small flat-tip screwdriver to depress the locking tabs, then unplug the window-switch and door-lock electrical connectors by their plastic bodies.
- Release the interior handle cable from its bracket by hand, then rotate the cable end out of the handle lever.
- Set the door panel on a clean, padded surface.
- Use a plastic trim-removal tool to peel back only the upper-front corner of the water deflector. Do not tear or stretch it.
Step 6: Disconnect the Mirror Wiring
- Locate the mirror wiring connector near the upper-front section of the door.
- Use a small flat-tip screwdriver to release the connector lock, then unplug the connector by hand.
- Release the mirror harness from any door-mounted clips by hand or with a plastic trim-removal tool.
- Note the harness routing so it can be installed away from the window mechanism.
Step 7: Remove the Old Mirror Assembly
- Hold the mirror securely with one hand from outside the door.
- Use a 10mm deep socket, 6-inch extension, and 1/4-inch-drive ratchet to remove the three mirror retaining nuts.
- Keep the socket level so a nut does not fall inside the door. Use a magnetic pickup tool if one is dropped.
- Pull the mirror straight outward while guiding its wiring and connector through the opening.
- Remove any gasket material left on the mounting surface by hand. Do not scratch the paint.
Step 8: Install the Replacement Mirror
- Confirm the replacement mirror gasket lies flat and fully covers the mounting base.
- Guide the electrical connector through the door opening and place all three studs through their mounting holes.
- Start all three nuts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm deep socket, 6-inch extension, and inch-pound torque wrench to tighten the nuts evenly in stages.
- Torque the mirror retaining nuts to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the nuts; excessive force can crack the mirror base or distort the door sheet metal.
Step 9: Connect and Route the Wiring
- Route the harness through the original clips by hand, keeping it clear of the moving window glass and regulator.
- Push the mirror electrical connectors together until the lock clicks.
- Press the water deflector back into its original butyl adhesive using gloved fingers. Butyl is the reusable sticky seal around the deflector.
- Seal the deflector completely to prevent water from reaching the interior trim.
Step 10: Test the Mirror Before Reassembly
- Temporarily reconnect the window-switch connector by hand.
- Switch the ignition to On without starting the engine.
- Use the factory mirror control to move the glass up, down, left, and right.
- If equipped, verify the mirror turn signal. Heated-glass operation may take several minutes with the rear defogger switched on.
- Switch the ignition off and disconnect the temporary switch connection before reinstalling the panel.
Step 11: Reinstall the Door Trim Panel
- Reconnect the interior handle cable and all electrical connectors by hand. Confirm every connector lock clicks.
- Replace any damaged trim-panel retainer by hand before fitting the panel.
- Lower the upper edge of the panel over the window ledge, then align its retainers with the door holes.
- Press around the panel perimeter firmly with your hands until every retainer engages.
- Install the original door-panel fasteners with a 7mm socket and 1/4-inch-drive ratchet or Torx T20 screwdriver, matching the fastener removed from each location.
- Tighten the trim fasteners only until snug; do not crush the plastic mounting points.
- Snap the handle trim and fastener covers into position by hand.
Step 12: Reinstall the Mirror Trim Cover
- Align the triangular mirror trim cover with its clips.
- Press it evenly into place by hand until all clips engage.
- Remove the automotive masking tape and inspect the door finish.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Operate the mirror through its full adjustment range and listen for smooth motor operation.
- 🔆 Check the mirror turn signal and heated glass if those features are installed.
- 🪟 Raise and lower the window completely. Stop immediately if the glass contacts wiring or makes an unusual noise.
- 🔒 Test the window switch, door lock, interior release handle, and speaker before driving.
- 🛣️ Adjust the mirror from the normal driving position and verify that the housing remains secure during a short road test.
- 💧 After rain or washing, inspect the lower door trim for moisture that could indicate an improperly sealed water deflector.
- 🧭 No programming, scan-tool setup, or ADAS calibration is normally required for a matching standard mirror assembly.
