🔧 Elantra - Side View Mirror Assembly Replacement
This procedure replaces the complete driver-side or passenger-side mirror assembly. The mirror is secured behind the triangular interior trim panel, so the main door panel normally stays installed.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour per mirror
Assumption: This procedure covers the factory power-adjustable mirror assembly; replacement features and connector must match the original mirror.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Lower the window before starting so you can support the mirror from both sides of the door.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the mirror connector.
- ⚠️ Support the mirror before removing the final nut. It can fall and damage the door or glass.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves because the mirror housing and door edges can be sharp.
- ⚠️ Do not pry with a metal screwdriver; it can damage the trim or side-curtain airbag area.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4-inch drive ratchet
- 1/4-inch drive 3-inch extension
- 1/4-inch drive inch-pound torque wrench
- Plastic interior trim removal tool set
- Small plastic pick
- Magnetic parts tray

📋 Before You Begin
- 📋 Park your Elantra on level ground, shift into Park, engage the parking brake, and switch the ignition off.
- 📋 Lower the window completely before disconnecting the battery.
- 📋 Open the hood. Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to disconnect the negative battery cable, then position it where it cannot touch the terminal.
- 📋 Wait at least three minutes before working near the door’s side-curtain airbag area.
- 📋 Compare the replacement mirror’s electrical connector and mounting studs with the original before disassembly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Interior Sail Panel
- The sail panel is the small triangular trim piece inside the door, directly opposite the mirror.
- Use a plastic interior trim removal tool to carefully pry the panel away from the door, starting at its upper edge.
- Pull straight inward to release the retaining clips. Do not twist the panel sharply.
- If a small electrical connector is attached, press its locking tab with the small plastic pick and unplug it.
- Keep your free hand ready to catch the panel.
Step 2: Disconnect the Mirror Wiring
- Locate the mirror electrical connector behind the removed sail panel.
- Press the connector’s locking tab with the small plastic pick and pull the connector apart by its plastic body.
- Do not pull directly on the wires.
- Release the wiring harness from any plastic holder using the plastic trim removal tool.
Step 3: Remove the Mirror Mounting Nuts
- Reach through the open window and hold the mirror housing firmly with one hand.
- Use the 10mm socket, 3-inch extension, and ratchet to remove the three mirror mounting nuts.
- Place each nut in the magnetic parts tray so it cannot fall into the door.
- Keep supporting the mirror after the final nut is removed.
Step 4: Remove the Old Mirror
- From outside the door, pull the mirror assembly straight away from the mounting surface.
- Carefully guide the electrical connector and wiring through the door opening.
- If the mirror sticks, use the plastic trim removal tool to gently separate the foam gasket. Do not lever against the painted door with metal tools.
- Inspect the mounting surface and remove loose gasket material by hand while wearing work gloves.
Step 5: Prepare the Replacement Mirror
- Check that the replacement mirror has three correctly positioned mounting studs and an undamaged foam gasket.
- Compare the electrical connector with the original connector. The shape, locking tab, and terminal count must match.
- If the replacement requires the original painted cap, use a plastic interior trim removal tool to release the cap tabs carefully and transfer it before installation.
- Do not install the mirror if the gasket is folded, missing, or damaged. The gasket helps prevent wind noise and water entry.
Step 6: Install the Replacement Mirror
- Guide the replacement mirror’s connector and wiring through the opening from outside the door.
- Seat the mirror and gasket flat against the door. Make sure no wiring is trapped beneath the gasket.
- Hold the mirror in position through the open window.
- Start all three mounting nuts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to tighten the nuts evenly in several passes.
- Use the 10mm socket and inch-pound torque wrench to tighten each nut to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the nuts; excessive force can crack the mirror base.
Step 7: Connect the Mirror Wiring
- Push the mirror connector into the door connector by hand until the locking tab clicks.
- Gently tug the connector bodies to verify they are locked together.
- Secure the harness in its original holder using your fingers or the plastic trim removal tool.
- Make sure the wiring cannot interfere with the window mechanism.
Step 8: Reinstall the Sail Panel
- Inspect the sail-panel clips. Replace any broken clips before installation.
- If equipped with an attached connector, reconnect it by hand until it clicks.
- Align the sail-panel clips with their door openings.
- Press the panel into place using the palm of your hand until every clip is fully seated.
- Do not strike the panel or press directly against a speaker grille.
Step 9: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back over its terminal.
- Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to snug the terminal nut.
- Use the 10mm socket and inch-pound torque wrench to tighten the negative terminal nut to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Confirm the terminal cannot rotate by hand.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Switch the ignition on and operate the mirror through its full up, down, left, and right range.
- ✅ If equipped, test mirror heating with the rear-window defogger and verify the turn signal or blind-spot indicator operates normally.
- ✅ Raise and lower the door glass while listening for rubbing or clicking. Stop immediately if the glass contacts wiring.
- ✅ Verify the sail panel sits flush and the mirror gasket has no visible gaps.
- ✅ Sit in the normal driving position and adjust the mirror before driving.
- ✅ Reset the clock and any saved radio settings if they were lost during battery disconnection.
- ✅ If the automatic window function no longer works, close the window completely and hold the switch upward for approximately three seconds.
