🔧 Sonata - Side View Mirror Assembly Replacement

This procedure replaces the complete left and right exterior mirror assemblies, not just the mirror glass. Each mirror is secured behind the triangular interior trim panel and connected to the door wiring harness.

Assumption: The replacement assemblies match your Sonata’s original power, heating, turn-signal, and blind-spot features.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours for both sides

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Wear safety glasses and gloves because broken mirror glass can have sharp edges.
  • Support the mirror before removing its mounting nuts so it cannot fall against the door.
  • Do not pry with a metal screwdriver; it can damage the trim, paint, or side-curtain airbag wiring.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the mirror electrical connectors.
  • Never switch the ignition on while door wiring is disconnected because diagnostic trouble codes may be stored.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch drive ratchet
  • 1/4-inch drive 3-inch extension
  • Inch-pound torque wrench rated 50-150 lb-in
  • Plastic interior trim removal tool set
  • Magnetic parts tray
  • Flashlight
  • Painter’s masking tape
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Mechanic’s gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Left side-view mirror assembly matching original equipment - Qty: 1
  • Right side-view mirror assembly matching original equipment - Qty: 1
  • Mirror mounting foam seals - Qty: 2, if not included
  • Interior sail-panel retaining clips - Qty: 2, if damaged

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Sonata on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
  • Lower both front windows. This prevents accidental lockout and gives you another way to steady each mirror.
  • Compare each replacement mirror with the original. The connector shape, wire count, mounting studs, housing shape, and installed features must match.
  • Open the hood. Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to disconnect the negative battery cable, then position it where it cannot touch the battery post.
  • A trim removal tool is a smooth plastic lever designed to release clips without scratching the interior panels.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Protect the Door and Mirror

  • Use painter’s masking tape to cover the painted door edge immediately below and beside the mirror.
  • Place a microfiber cloth over the upper door edge for additional protection.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect the triangular interior sail panel for its clip locations.

Step 2: Remove the Interior Sail Panel

  • Insert a plastic interior trim removal tool between the upper edge of the triangular sail panel and the door frame.
  • Gently lever the panel inward to release its retaining clips, then lift it away from the door.
  • Do not pull sharply. If a small tweeter speaker or wiring connector is present, use the plastic trim tool to depress its locking tab and disconnect it.
  • Place the panel and any loose clips in the magnetic parts tray.
  • Pull near each clip to prevent cracking.

Step 3: Disconnect the Mirror Wiring

  • Use the flashlight to locate the mirror electrical connector behind the sail-panel opening.
  • Press the connector’s locking tab by hand and pull the two connector halves apart by their plastic bodies, not by the wires.
  • If the connector is secured to a bracket, use the plastic trim tool to release its retaining clip.
  • If the connector cannot pass through the opening, carefully release only the nearby upper door-trim clips with the plastic trim tool. Complete door-panel removal is normally unnecessary.

Step 4: Remove the Mirror Mounting Nuts

  • Hold the exterior mirror firmly with one hand or have a helper support it.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3-inch extension, and ratchet to remove the three mirror mounting nuts.
  • Place each nut directly into the magnetic parts tray so it cannot fall inside the door.
  • Do not remove or loosen the exposed mounting studs from the mirror assembly.

Step 5: Remove the Old Mirror

  • Use both gloved hands to pull the mirror straight away from the door while guiding its connector and wiring through the opening.
  • If the foam seal sticks, use the plastic trim tool to separate it gently. Do not twist the mirror against the painted door.
  • Use a microfiber cloth to clean the mounting surface. Do not use a sharp scraper.

Step 6: Prepare the Replacement Mirror

  • Use the flashlight to compare the replacement mirror’s mounting studs, gasket, connector, and wire routing with the removed assembly.
  • Make sure the foam seal lies flat around the mirror base. Install a new foam seal by hand if the replacement mirror does not include one.
  • Do not transfer electrical parts between mismatched mirror assemblies.

Step 7: Install the Replacement Mirror

  • Use both gloved hands to feed the replacement mirror connector through the door opening.
  • Seat the mirror base evenly against the door while ensuring the foam seal is not folded or trapped.
  • Start all three mounting nuts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3-inch extension, and ratchet to tighten the nuts evenly in stages.
  • Use an inch-pound torque wrench and 10mm socket to tighten each mounting nut to Torque to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  • Do not overtighten the nuts; excessive force can crack the mirror base or distort the door skin.

Step 8: Reconnect the Mirror Wiring

  • Push the electrical connectors together by hand until the locking tab clicks.
  • Use the plastic trim tool to reinstall the harness retaining clip into its original bracket.
  • Use the flashlight to verify that no wire is pinched between the mirror, trim, or door metal.

Step 9: Reinstall the Sail Panel

  • Reconnect any tweeter connector by hand until its locking tab clicks.
  • Align the sail panel’s clips with their holes, then press directly over each clip by hand until it snaps into place.
  • Use the plastic trim tool to tuck the panel edge into position without forcing it.
  • Remove the painter’s masking tape and wipe the area with a microfiber cloth.

Step 10: Repeat on the Opposite Door

  • Use the same plastic trim tools, 10mm socket, extension, ratchet, and torque wrench to replace the mirror on the opposite side.
  • Again tighten all three mounting nuts to Torque to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

Step 11: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery terminal fully onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and inch-pound torque wrench to tighten the terminal nut to Torque to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
  • Do not overtighten the battery terminal.

✅ After Repair

  • Switch the ignition on and use the driver-door mirror control to move each mirror fully up, down, left, and right.
  • Switch on the rear-window defogger and verify that both mirror heaters operate, if equipped. The glass should become mildly warm after several minutes.
  • Test the mirror turn signals and blind-spot warning indicators if those features are installed.
  • Start your Sonata and verify that no warning lights remain illuminated.
  • Confirm that each mirror base sits flush and does not move when gently pushed by hand.
  • Spray or pour a small amount of water around each mirror base and inspect the interior for leaks.
  • Reset the clock and any saved audio settings if they were lost during battery disconnection.
  • Perform the power-window initialization if automatic operation stops working: close the window fully, then hold the switch upward for approximately one additional second.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹24,000-₹60,000 for both sides, depending on mirror features, paint, and parts availability

DIY Cost: ₹16,000-₹45,000 for both mirror assemblies

You Save: ₹8,000-₹15,000 by doing it yourself!

Local labor rates and imported-parts pricing vary. This repair takes a shop approximately 1-1.5 hours, excluding paint work.
