🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Liftgate

• Use your hand to open the liftgate fully.
• Stand behind the side with the failed rear turn signal bulb.
• Look at the inner edge of the tail lamp assembly, next to the liftgate opening.

Step 2: Remove the Tail Lamp Fasteners

• Use the 8mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the tail lamp retaining bolts from the inner edge of the lamp.
• Set the bolts somewhere safe so they do not roll away.
• Tip: A small cup works great.

Step 3: Pull the Tail Lamp Assembly Rearward

• Use both hands to grip the tail lamp assembly.
• Pull the lamp straight rearward away from the body of your Escape.
• If it feels stuck, use the plastic trim removal tool gently at the outer edge to help release the locator pins.
• Do not twist the lamp hard. The plastic guide pins can break.

Step 4: Locate the Rear Turn Signal Bulb Socket

• Look at the back of the tail lamp assembly.
• Find the turn signal bulb socket. The socket twists into the rear of the lamp housing.
• A bulb socket is the plastic holder that locks the bulb into the lamp assembly and connects it to the wiring.

Step 5: Remove the Bulb Socket

• Use your hand to rotate the rear turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
• Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp assembly.
• Do not pull on the wires.

Step 6: Replace the Bulb

• Wear nitrile gloves before touching the new bulb.
• Use your hand to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
• Push the new rear turn signal bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
• If the bulb is an amber glass style, make sure it matches the old bulb color and base shape.

Step 7: Test the New Bulb Before Reassembly

• Keep the bulb socket hanging safely without pinching the wiring.
• Use your hand to turn on the hazard switch inside the cabin.
• Confirm the new rear turn signal bulb flashes normally.
• Turn the hazard switch off before continuing.

Step 8: Reinstall the Bulb Socket

• Use your hand to insert the bulb socket into the tail lamp assembly.
• Rotate the socket clockwise until it locks in place.
• Make sure the socket sits flat so water cannot enter the lamp.

Step 9: Reinstall the Tail Lamp Assembly

• Line up the tail lamp guide pins with the holes in the body.
• Use your hands to push the lamp straight forward until it seats evenly.
• Use the 8mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to reinstall the tail lamp bolts.
• Tighten the bolts snug only. Do not overtighten plastic lamp mounting points.
• Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)

Step 10: Final Light Check

• Use your hand to operate the left and right turn signal stalk positions from the driver seat.
• Walk behind your Escape and confirm both rear turn signals flash correctly.
• Check that the tail lamp sits flush with the body and does not move.

• ✅ Check brake lights, tail lights, reverse lights, and hazard lights while you are at the rear of your Escape.
